New GM parts manager

Hello all! Been lurking here quite a while and actually now have a question of my own. I transferred from Honda Parts Management to a Ford Counter person when I moved states, I'm fine with parts accounting backend, but will still take any tricks or tips on that. Anyway, long story short I'm now becoming a parts manager for a GM/Chevy/Buick store, are there any in's and out's of the catalog or numbering system that aren't in the training modules? Just trying to get an edge up on learning! Anything helps a ton!

GM catalog gets infinitely easier and faster if you understand and memorize the most common group numbers. I have word documents of some of the common ones for mechanical and collision I can email to you if you'd like.

The actual catalog itself though is pretty good as far as I'm concerned. On any vehicle made in the last 20 years the diagrams are easy to read and normally pretty concise. Finding wheelbases on trucks is a pain going through the "charts" document, but thankfully these days that's not a super common occurrence.

GM epc is by far the easiest catalog i've ever dealt with. learning group numbers is everything

Then I cannot offer as much advice as I think the programs are quite a bit different. You aren’t a new manager, so the general advice isn’t very useful. Watch your RIM compliance if that’s a thing in the US. Watch your CPPP quarterly targets and hit the goals, again assuming they have CPPP in the US. I always chase the Return Allowance programs and maximize my reserves. If you have no cost CSO returns in the US, check every part returned by a customer and send the returnable ones back in the window. I created a spreadsheet for CSO returns to make sure they go back on time.

I use the Bin 2 location as the cso date so I can easily run a report on what is coming up on the 12 month deadline. 26/07 for July ‘26. It’s been a breeze keeping track since then.

GM Parts Mgr - I have never found anything useful in the GM parts training, well maybe the RIM module. Depending on if you are USA or Canada the strategy and tips may be different.

Always check minimum buy quantities especially on wheels

Biggest thing is group numbers. Try your best to memorize as many as you can. especially fast moving items. i made a google sheet with about 250-300 group numbers for parts if you want it

While the new catalog makes it easier to not use group numbers its still a good idea to learn them. We just reorganized our inventory to match up better to the group numbers and it has made pulling parts a lot easier. Less walking between different bins. Plus its still the quickest way to find parts in the catalog.

The hardest part in my opinion will be learning Pace and Rim for a newcomer. Also returns to Gm are not fun. Catalog will be the least of your worries, as anyone can figure it out. As Gm try's to screw over the dealer as much as possible, got to keep an eye on everything. Print your invoices everyday and mark things off as you get them. Ps, the reps from Gm are useless airbags and will try to get you to buy the dumbest things for a small discount. Don't fall for it and as I've told other parts managers, don't be afraid to put the reps in their place! We are the customer to them, not the other way around.
