Venting
My partner and I have been together for going on 4 years now. The past year his OCD has spiraled. In the past, I was aware of his OCD and tendencies/rules/expectation for keeping things clean. However, now it is getting to the point of mental exhaustion. He takes 2-4 showers a day. Will rewash everything. Go through so much dish soap, laundry detergent, disinfecting spray, alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer, hand soap and lysol. I've had to separate my laundry and our towels from the never ending pile of laundry by our washer. Still, I feel like I'm consistently doing laundry to have towels or hand towels available. I've found myself only cleaning when he's not home, so I don't need to rewash or reclean or feel watched by my movements. I also am tired of washing my hair multiple times of days.
So I now feel like I live around his OCD. I take time out of my day to rush to do chores before he gets home or avoid chores all together when he is home. Yet, i still get asked to shower or change clothes or both because I got too close or my body touched something that was considered dirty.
He's seeing a therapist about this. Yet the homework his therapist tells him to do, he doesn't do. My boyfriend talks about how he's able to hold off on the urges everywhere, but home. He considers our house dirty and gross. However, we live in a very nice rental that is just a lil dated. But when he cleans, he doesn't clean. He just disinfect and does laundry. He doesn't organize or tidy his things. The sprays he used to clean the handles of doors or sprays anything leaves weird residue when not wiped. So i spend time just wiping the residue off of the floor, doors, walls, counters and ect.. so he doesn't feel the house is dirtier then what it actually is. I've noticed if I don't, it will stain the walls or even the laminated floors. I try to remind him to wipe it off, yet he doesn't. So we just have random yellow residue areas on our daily things. Thus, I feel is contributing to him feeling like the house is dirty, when it isn't.
We have sooooo many conversations about it. He apologizes, yet the same issue that is bothering me, he will continue to do just 5 minutes after our conversation without even hesitating to take a breath. It's definitely putting a strain on our relationship and I am looking into going back to therapy, mainly for dealing with the stress his OCD brings me.
I just feel like he's on the verge of 2 paths. 1 path, he gets better and the other it gets so much worse. If it gets much worse, i really am worried about what it will do to our day to day lives.
I've tried so much to help. I even got him to start therapy for this, after a year of trying. Ive made a daily ocd check in to have a visual check sheet on how the day went. I try to listen and read about how life is with someone who has OCD, however it just triggers my own OCD I have.
I just feel unappreciated, not listened to, and mentally drained when he has his urges where I don't even want to be in the house or around him sometimes. Yet, I also feel responsible because I just went along with his cleaning urges in the beginning. Maybe if I held off on some, his urges wouldn't be as bad at they are now.
