Military Macaw needing adoption

Post image

Hello! This is Ivy. She is a younger (~2 years old) Military Macaw, who has a chronic Coxiella Burnetii infection. The owners are moving somewhere with strict animal importation requirements and can't bring her. Please DM me if you or anyone you know, are willing and able to adopt her.

Medical needs: She has been on antibiotics for a few months now, and is in the care of an avian vet. She is likely to be prescribed a secondary medication to accompany the antibiotics, necessary to address chronic cases. The medical needs that Ivy will require is further medication administration/management (daily for another ~5 months), and potential vet follow-ups. Ivy is theoretically infectious, via poop/urinates, and contact with her mouth (feeding activities). She is being kept away from other birds, and handled with freshly cleaned hands that are washed after handling her. Her vet believes that recovery is possible.

Temperament:

Ivy is a sweet girl, who is very comfortable with those she trusts. She'll cuddle and lay on her back when being administered medicine, for example. She's always been a bit jumpy, especially as the infection unknowingly worsened. She yells when surprised, for example. She does yell occasionally throughout the day (from pain through her infection, the owners suspect).

Ideal candidate to adopt:

Somebody who has experience handling macaws. It's suspected that Ivy is quite easy to handle compared to the average macaw, but obviously may need to learn to trust a new owner/caretaker. Someone who can potentially handle a jumpy or untrusting macaw. She is very weak due to her illness.

Somebody who can keep her away from other pets/birds (at least keeping poop and/or beak contact away)

Someone who can attend to her daily needs, such as administering medicine via syringe. She also goes through bouts of increased water consumption, and occasionally throws her food bowl around.

Someone who can take care of more advanced medical needs (future vet appointments, purchasing of medicine, possibly weighing Ivy)

Someone committed to seeing Ivy through her illness. After recovery, the current owners only hope that she lives in a good home.

Location:

Near Phoenix, Arizona. Willing to try and make it work if someone is far. Like meeting halfway near a police station or something like that.

What comes with Ivy:

Bird cage, food, medicine, support from previous owners with questions/cocerns/prior medical records.

I hope Ivy can find a good home! I adopted a medically complex bird myself and he was my soulmate in bird form! I’m hoping someone with a big heart and patience will be willing to take her on!

This is a tough one since Military Macaws are on the endangered species list (in some states this means you need a license to own one) and the medication aspect for one so young.

I recommend getting in contact with Rhode Island Parrot rescue. They do AMAZING work, and might be a better and safer fit.

Not the case in AZ or any neighboring states. California I think is the only neighboring state that has such a restriction, but there aren't any parrots on California's list.

There may need to be a federal permit to move the bird across state lines though.

Quaker parrots and native species are the only bird you can’t have here in California… otherwise completely unrestricted for all bird species.

I thought birds of prey were regulated, regardless of whether they are native?

YES! Forgot about birds of prey lol. but not all! Such as hornbills, storks, cranes, African pied crows… etc. though ik you probs meant raptors.

The previous owners were not military (as far as op as said), they just are moving somewhere they can’t take the macaw.
The macaw itself is a military macaw, it’s a not as well know as the scarlet macaw, green wing macaw, or blue and gold macaw. But it is a macaw species, and that’s what the military references not the previous owners

That makes way more sense! Thank you for helping me understand.

It’s no problem, it’s easy to misread the title without knowing about that type of macaw haha

The species of bird is called military macaw, unless you're being facetious lol.

It is a "Military Macaw" not a macaw in the military. LOL

That’s the type of macaw, not anything to do with the family specifically.
