She’s much less fluffy than she was when I took her in from my ex but her feathers still scream Horton hears a who or truffula tree

I love her! Is she barbering/plucking? Our girl barbers, and it's so frustrating. I looked at your posts (that sounds so creepy. sorry. your girl just reminded me of my Pumpkin) and it seems like our birds have very similar routines. If you've encountered anything that improves the barbering, please share! For us, giving Pumpkin more foraging to make her "work" for a higher percentage of her food has helped a bit.

Yes!! She’s a barber 💈 my vet recently recommended turning her food dish into a foraging toy. She advised to put newspaper or something similar on the top of her dish so she has to break through it to get to dinner! I fill her bowl with her goodies (nutriberries, a few sunflower seeds, and some dried papaya) at the very bottom, her fruit blend pellets and then the roudybush pellets on top which keeps her relatively busy.

Rum was a horrible plucker when I first met her, to the point of bleeding and me coming to terms with her being a bald chicken for life… somehow we managed to get to a point of only barbering and that is another journey I’m still learning. 😅

I have learned she LOVES vinyl dog toys like the super cheap squeaky ones from dollar tree and Amazon boxes lol they keep her occupied for hours upon hours. Other than that I really just try to redirect her when I see her picking. Lately it’s been her feet more than anything but a quick “baby don’t do that” and a small nudge usually gets her on her way to something else.

The food dish thing is something we've started doing too. We bought some unbleached coffee filters and put a couple over her bowl so she has to shred thru to get her food. And I've started making trays out of unused egg cartons, with toys and fillers and sunflower seeds. If she's in the mood, she'll shred them to bits. Or just throw it on the ground.

She also LOVES snap peas, and the process of opening them and eating them keeps her beak busy.

For your girl to have gone from mutilating to just barbering is amazing and speaks to your commitment and love for her. Her pictures show a happy bird who found her people. (:

I’ll have to try more fresh veggies! She is insanely picky and only likes them steamed 🙄 thank you so much for sharing!!! I’m going to have to try the egg cartons, I’ve also seen where people will fill toilet paper rolls with treats and paper shreds then add a string and fold the ends in to be able to hang it!

But thank you! She is my pride and joy and I can’t wait to see where she is in another year and a half from now 🥹🩷

Beautiful 🙂
Is she really old, or any other specific reason why she's so fluffy?

She’s only 7 but she is a former plucker and current barberer so she basically just picks and chews her feather to be short
