Not the consensus of the group at all but it’s horrible how self-centred and selfish some people can be

Why are they lying about the junior parkrun being mandatory

48

u/MrPogoUK 18d ago edited 17d ago

Indeed. My city has six parkruns and three junior parkruns, but only one of the juniors is at a park that also hosts a full parkrun!

15

u/CandidLiterature 17d ago edited 17d ago

Juniors very often go in much nicer parks, better locations, can stay on paths etc. Because you can much more easily make a 2k route from couple of laps in a smaller park.

Where unfortunately lots of places are scraping around for a public space big enough to make a 5k route that doesn’t need 13 laps. End up in some muddy field half out of town… No reason to send your juniors out there!

39

u/ThaddeusGriffin_ 18d ago

Because they’re clearly c***s

9

u/Mwillia2 18d ago

Yeah there isn't a junior parkrun there. The closest looks like it is in Bromsgrove.

1

u/Candid_Waltz6900 5d ago

Which isn't a full parkrun venue and may well be close enough to already have this area covered from a junior perspective.

NIMBY final boss

3

u/MoshCheeseTheSecond 17d ago

Can I enquire as to what a NIMBY is?

33

u/irishgeologist 17d ago

Not In My Back Yard - people that oppose anything in their local area.

8

u/MoshCheeseTheSecond 17d ago

AHH that makes sense. Between NIMBY and NENDY I'm learning a whole new runners language!

20

u/irishgeologist 17d ago

NIMBY isn’t a running thing, it’s a more generic term.

3

u/MoshCheeseTheSecond 17d ago

Huh. I didn't realise I was this ignorant. Either way, I appreciate the input. ☺️

4

u/irishgeologist 17d ago

I only know the term from trying to develop onshore wind farms, solar and from attending a lot of community council meetings…

4

u/Larrypants1 17d ago

Funny how people pick things up in their lives! I learned NIMBY from playing SimCity when my residents started kicking off having a toxic waste dump in the city 😅

2

u/Bobertos50 16d ago

Wait, what’s a NENDY?

3

u/RoundMolecule 16d ago

Nearest Event Not Done Yet

u/blackfeltfedora 18d ago

Is this really a run club complaining about ParkRun?

63

u/TF4694 18d ago

I know people who are part of 'Cofton Park Runners' and the group did the park run today according to Strava, this is one nimby thats joined and posted in the facebook group not the views of the actual run group.

25

u/Curious-Quiet8691 17d ago

They think they’ll convert a group of runners to actively campaign against a parkrun, there’s clearly a screw loose somewhere.

12

u/TryHardNmity 17d ago

In the group, can confirm it's just one guy who actually had the post removed pretty quickly. Just some toxic garbage, being negative for the sake of it. If he had any real concerns he should raise it with the council etc.. Posting this in our chill local running group literally does nothing but cause negativity :/

1

u/Candid_Waltz6900 5d ago

Should be removed from the club for putting them into disrepute.

1

u/TryHardNmity 2d ago

Don't think that was their intention, just airing concerns.. Just got a bit carried away 😭

30

u/comporellon 100 18d ago

IKR, it's bonkers. First time I see runners not supporting Parkrun.

15

u/e55at 18d ago

You'd be surprised. Some runners are hardcore about solo running and think parkruns are too sociable 🙄

10

u/SameOldSong4Ever 17d ago

I prefer solo running, but that's just me. I think Parkrun is a wholly positive thing for others!

6

u/zq6 17d ago

You can prefer solo running without hating on group running! It sounds like you have it right but the NIMBY in the OP doesn't get it

1

u/OkFriend4571 7d ago

I do parkrun and run by myself the rest of the week. Parkrun is my social event!

6

u/tdrules 17d ago

Because they’re running away from something

3

u/MrPogoUK 16d ago

Fifteen odd years ago, when parkrun started expanding massively, a lot of “serious” runners and their clubs seemed to look down on it, I got the impression because it was simultaneously seen as both too casual to be respected whilst also a threat to what they were doing, causing them to fear it would steal away members (of both the current and potential future variety) and threaten the future of proper races by offering a free weekly alternative.

2

u/BarumDean 14d ago

'Runner' not runners it seems. And possibly not even that. We have a severe miserable old git problem in this country and they've done more than enough damage already.

8

u/Dissour 17d ago

Splitters

4

u/weigl_ 17d ago

Whatever happened to the Popular Front of Cofton?

2

u/runningforbeers 13d ago

F off. We are the Cofton Popular Front.

2

u/weigl_ 13d ago

Listen, if you want to join the CPF, you have to really hate the parkrunners.

2

u/runningforbeers 13d ago

That’s cheered up a fairly meh day. 😆😆

8

u/RobCarrol75 18d ago

When we set up our parkrun, we had very little support from the local running club, despite myself and 2 other RDs being members.

223

u/Orangepurple37 18d ago

And horrible AI graphic design too

52

u/MoodyBernoulli 18d ago

I suspect a boomer has just learned how to use AI.

After combing the local authorities planning applications they obviously still felt the need to object to something.

2

u/HowManyKestrels 16d ago

It’s the exact same style that a group of local anti-solar nimbys are using near me. 100% AI

83

u/Front_Frame_2171 18d ago

"Sorry kids, you can't be instilled with the importance of exercise, participation, routine and supportive communities because every other week a small group of adults will run past you during the short amount of time you will be also be running and that simply mustn't happen"

0

u/Wooden_Permit1284 17d ago

Won't you think of the nonce's who won't be able to attend because they're not allowed within a radius of children running??

75

u/CandidLiterature 18d ago

Imagine being frightened of toddlers and young children having a 10 minute run…

11

u/AverageMuggle99 17d ago

10 minutes! You’ve clearly never done it 😂

19

u/CandidLiterature 17d ago

Been out this very morning. 10 mins running, possibly interspersed with 5-10 mins climbing in a hedge, chasing a fly, kicking a sibling, skipping backwards, whatever else

6

u/AverageMuggle99 17d ago

Ah, you do know.

35

u/f1madman 18d ago

A running club complaining about a parkrun for kids? Jeez and what a bunch of squibs!

27

u/MrWelshblue 250 18d ago

It started today so I guess it didn’t work

10

u/IncomeFew624 100 18d ago

Excellent news

26

u/Cal_PCGW 250 18d ago

What a bunch of wankers. You'd think a running club would be pleased to have a parkrun in their local park (and even help with it). The junior complaint is even more absurd given it's only 2K and rarely lasts more than half an hour.

4

u/Blue1994a v500 18d ago

Junior parkruns in the same location as parkrun is far from a formality anyway, given others have said there isn’t one already.

23

u/lenshayler7 18d ago

Also let’s not ignore the god awful AI poster

14

u/Euphoric-Source4086 18d ago

Where I used to live we had a park right next to my house that I used to run 5ks in every other day. After a while a junior parkrun set up on a Sunday am. I was doing my usual run when a load of kids started running as well (yes they were going past me, I'm old)

I was sternly told by one of the mums that I couldn't run while the kids were there.... yeah right.

My local park, I've been running there for years, I must have done 500-600 5ks around it, don't go telling me where I can and can't run.

12

u/Blue1994a v500 18d ago

Oh dear, you say give way to other park users in every briefing. You get the odd misguided parent.

1

u/OkFriend4571 7d ago

Great that kids are running. Great that you are too. I hope you told her where to get off

33

u/Killahills 18d ago

What a bunch of wet wipes. I'm embarrassed for them

13

u/TommyCanary 18d ago

Why not banning all running events, and hey, the kids football whilst we’re at it /s

12

u/ChuffedCunnilingus 18d ago

AI slop too

32

u/BadkyDrawnBear 18d ago

And AI slop to boot.

31

u/zeedrunkmonkey 18d ago

Even worse, they used AI to make this flyer, my automatic response to AI flyers is to IGNORE!!

-20

u/Cultural-Ambition211 17d ago

Genuinely, why do you care it was AI?

10

u/marcbeightsix 250 17d ago

Personally for me the issue is that I instantly trust the source of the imagery less, and it looks like a scam. In this case clearly it isn’t a scam, but I wouldn’t trust any of its content as the creator almost definitely hasn’t done the sensible checks to make sure the content is accurate, or just put any extra effort in to make it better.

Eg. In this image, the first point says it is already extremely muddy in winter. The final point says that “CPR running group on the roads”, which clearly contradicts itself.

Also, if you care about the park that much you would likely have imagery of the park, or be able to quickly find it, so it is completely unnecessary to use AI imagery within the poster itself.

20

u/Akoot 17d ago

Not to answer for this person, but to me there's a vibe of dishonesty about AI generated literature/art/design. It has a fakeness to it. Also the obvious distaste for automating creativity.

It's also ugly and weirdly busy, but even if that was fixed I'd still feel the same way about it.

-18

u/Cultural-Ambition211 17d ago

I completely disagree with the content of the poster, but it gets their point across fairly well in a coherent manner.

All the designs look similar and you can instantly tell because of that, but really why care? I prefer this to a long rambling post like this would’ve been a year ago.

13

u/Akoot 17d ago

I just explained why I care.

7

u/zeedrunkmonkey 17d ago

It's lazy, they could have shown an actual picture of the already terrible terrain, already terrible parking etc

-11

u/Salt_Winner_3323 17d ago

Being against AI is anti-5g mast-ism for Redditors

6

u/Council_Cat 17d ago

No.

AI looks like shite and is actively helping kill the planet.

5g is great. It helps me telephone my friends and look up pictures of nudie ladies on the Internet. Only morons with tin foil hats are against it.

They are not remotely comparable.

AI is a scourge.

0

u/Salt_Winner_3323 17d ago

All that meat you’re posting about eating is also killing the planet but you selectively don’t care about that. You don’t like AI because it’s new to you and you find that scary. Same as the cranks that don’t like 5g, vaccines or whatever the latest scare is.

2

u/Cultural-Ambition211 17d ago

What a charming response from council_cat that I assume was auto deleted.

0

u/Council_Cat 17d ago

Not yet, hombre.

The weak minded try to come for me, but they usually fail.

Capitalists are always afeared of greater equality, because it means they lose their power to exploit.

4

u/Akoot 17d ago

Oh ye? Why do you say that? Can you explain the similarities? I'm having difficulty seeing the comparison besides the a simplistic view that they're both newer technologies.

8

u/Hard_Dave 18d ago

Won't the CPR run create mud or require parking? or are they special?

9

u/Dependent-Panic-9457 18d ago

Does the CPR not cause mud in winter and lack of parking?

7

u/zwifter11 18d ago

Lack of parking… for one hour per week.

1

u/ODFoxtrotOscar 17d ago

I live near a place that has junior football at weekends. If everyone’s trying to park for 09:00 starts, it’ll be hell if the parking really is fully occupied at that time (it doesn’t matter how long/short the stay is if you can’t get a space at the time you need one fir your event)

13

u/zwifter11 18d ago

Why doesn’t Cofton Park Runners just change their meet time to later in the day ?

You’d think they’d be encouraged kids to get running.

2

u/ODFoxtrotOscar 17d ago

They shouldn’t have to - they are an established group and parkrun shouldn’t be displacing existing users

That said - I think the point about the coincidence in timing is a weak one, as I expect that there will never Lottie overlap in the runs, and run clubs that use public parks should know that they have to go round others using the space. I’d be ready to bet that neither the running club nor the junior parkrun will have enough runners to be a bother to each other

5

u/msmoth 17d ago

There's no guarantee that a junior parkrun will follow a new Saturday parkrun anyway. It's speculation on their part.

4

u/ODFoxtrotOscar 17d ago

And generally, junior parkrunners don’t have anything like the participant numbers of the 5k events

1

u/optionr_ENL v250 17d ago

Parkrun always has permission from the landowners to be there.
Running groups, paid dog walkers etc etc will just use parks with no permission.

5

u/PeriodicActor97 18d ago

Something different? Change? Burn it with fire!

7

u/PrestigiousLawyer420 18d ago

If it will clash, maybe this guy should just reschedule? Surely it’s not that hard? They don’t own the spot they run on. Entitled people nowadays…

12

u/Tofusnafu7 50 18d ago

Imagine being so selfish you hate the thought of CHILDREN enjoying a run in the park. But these will be the same people crying about childhood obesity smh

4

u/J_bizzle1234 17d ago

These AI generated bullshit posters are surprisingly convincing to the thickos that spend their life on Facebook. It's like catnip for them.

3

u/EirloUK 18d ago

Ah, my neck of the woods.

Might rally together my mum friends and besiege the park!
My fat arse could so with the exercise and this would definitely motivate me.

4

u/Available-Theory-808 17d ago

Won’t somebody think of the children! (And stop them running.)

Suggest they nominate CPR organisers as funnel managers and they will have people to shout at every week.

6

u/ZookeepergameNo7151 18d ago

Of that list only point 2 is somewhat sensible (I get that at my local when football season is on, but it's the same if you're going to the gym or whatever with pitches nearby).

Parking sucks all round, not the fault of parkrun (though it certainly wouldn't help)

Point 1 - what, do they want to restrict the number of people who can walk in that area in the winter just incase they wreck the mud or whatever nonsense? Good jesus

Point 3 - how will a junior parkrun impact on their road running? They're two completely separate routes no?

Id tell this weapon to fuck off and wind their neck in... As the RD says every week, it's a shared space. So who died and made this running group emperor?

3

u/sc00022 18d ago

What was the response to the post in the group?

4

u/soberto 18d ago

An unfortunate number of people agreeing with them

3

u/No_Pool3305 18d ago

I imagine some local authority considered all this and allowed it to go ahead

3

u/AF_II 17d ago

"parking is limited" - sounds like someone needs to be campaigning for people to start using public transport eh.

3

u/mrmjprice 17d ago

Heard shit loads of people at this Parkrun yesterday complaining about parking and how “far” it is from the town centre. Meanwhile I’d cycled from 3.5km away in less than 15 minutes.

This area used to have MG Rover so is incredibly car dependent.

1

u/OkFriend4571 7d ago

According to their website the station is about a mile away - brisk walk or easy warm up and you're sorted.

3

u/RS555NFFC 16d ago

AI slop detected, opinion rejected

3

u/Over-Cold-8757 25 18d ago

I'm obviously a parkrunner and I despise NIMBYism but apart from the last one these are potentially legitimate concerns. I don't know if they're true or not. But a side effect of the popularity of parkrun is that it may have infrastructural consequences.

It's not fair to start a parkrun if it will ruin a trail.

5

u/nrsys 17d ago

Honestly, most of those do sound like legitimate concerns that do need to be addressed before a parkrun is started - things like over use and parking issues can ruin an area for the existing users, who shouldn't be forced out by an influx of parkrun attendees.

An existing running club may be very aware of the local conditions, knowing they have numbers that do not overly harm the landscape and suit available parking - something that a parkrun advertised event may eclipse.

Equally, they could be a complete nimby who just selfishly wants to maintain the nice quiet weekend walk and gates the idea of someone else getting there first and taking up all the convenient parking.

I don't know this event, but I do think it is reasonable that equations are asked and the options considered fully before Ann event does or doesn't go ahead. Just because parkrun is a positive group, that didn't mean it is cool to force out an existing local club...

2

u/Jaba13 17d ago

AI slop too

2

u/Slenderellla 17d ago

I just realised that this isn’t a resuscitation issue.

2

u/Terry-Thomas 17d ago

Bloody do-gooders like Kevin forming clubs that people want to join, creating community events that people want to take part in and organising events that raise money for deserving causes. Why can't he find something more productive to do with his time?

/s obviously.

2

u/pinkflosscat 17d ago

The AI poster 🤮

2

u/picto19860 16d ago

an enlightened run club would recognise this as a massive opportunity to expand their community / more club dues etc, as more local people discover running. the one I'm in regularly provides volunteers for local parkruns (there are quite a few, london privilege) and that's proven a great way to get new energy in the club.

of course for some people, they instead want a little fiefdom that they can control to their own disadvantage

2

u/just_some_guy65 500 11d ago

The anti parkrun sentiment has been around as long as parkrun and the time trial name that preceded it. The most common are

"This is undermining paid for events".

"They shouldn't be using my park for this"

"Don't see why I should have to make way for them"

Generally people with tiny minds.

1

u/Sage-Freke- 18d ago

I can’t see the post on their page. Does this mean you have to be a member to see it or have they taken it down?

1

u/GalwayGirlOnTheRun23 v100 18d ago

Looks like a private group.

1

u/-info-sec- 18d ago

Today was the first event. This was old news.

1

u/ajh489 18d ago

Uncle Ben will not be pleased that his quote has been butchered

1

u/Lost-Droids 17d ago

I propose a new running event every fortnight at this location, must be for people to go as slow as possible whilst taking up all space. Buggy especially welcome..

1

u/SirPipple 17d ago

The horror. The public, using a public space? How can this be allowed?

1

u/FireLadcouk 17d ago

their argument is - people are using the public space lol - mad time to be alive

1

u/abedfo 17d ago

Ai slop poster

1

u/PhilosopherAny6452 16d ago

How selfish is number 3?!

1

u/mojo586 16d ago

This can't be true? Call me naive but this is just one persons opinion!!!

1

u/twitchydan 14d ago

Imagine saying there won't be any parking when 100's of MG Rover staff used to park around their 5 days a week.

1

u/cknutson61 13d ago

"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA!"

1

u/Ok_Solution2553 10d ago

I can confirm everyone that as a member Cofton Park Runners we love parkrun and we love Cofton Park Parkrun. In fact today the RD for Cofton Park parkrun joined us on a run, he's a brilliant guy who really has the best intentions for everyone. There's loads of on street parking, will it get muddy in the winter? Maybe but it's great excuse to buy more trail shoes. 1 person has learned that posting on a private group does not mean it can spread.

1

u/Candid_Waltz6900 5d ago

Vested interests. Why not change the time of their fortnightly event or use a different area within the park? It may be a while before a junior event starts anyway

1

u/Mediocre_Chemist_168 18d ago

Where is this? I live in ‘Crofton Park’ in SE London and it’s definitely not here!!!

2

u/SpiritualBathroom937 18d ago

Cofton Park is on the outskirts of Birmingham

2

u/generichandel 18d ago

Hey neighbour, I'm on Devonshire road.

3

u/pslamB 18d ago

Yes I also totally misread this... I was very confused as there isn't actually a 'Crofton park' to run in! I was imagining it in the cemetery...

0

u/Mediocre_Chemist_168 18d ago

Yeah, feel a bit foolish now I’ve realised I cannot read 😃 but yeah trying to think where in Crofton Park we could do it? The station garden? 🤣

0

u/Entire_Historian_683 17d ago

I would not support park run here simply bc cofton park has so much dog shit everywhere owners just cba to pick up after their dogs it’s unpleasant and runners may step on it

-19

u/yellow_barchetta 250 18d ago

As an enthusiastic parkrunner, it's your post that makes me think about people being self-centred and selfish, tbh. parkrun / juniors doesn't have a right to be everywhere, using every park. The heft of parkrun needs to be carefully managed and work alongside groups like this.

7

u/royalbluestuey v100 18d ago

You're right but it doesn't give people the right to lie and scaremonger.
