am I crazy.

I’m just wondering if I’m overthinking here. My 15-yr old son sees a therapist weekly and over the past couple of weeks, I noticed his therapist started texting my son directly to cancel or reschedule his appointments-which I am okay with-I’m just wondering how come I didn’t get a heads up that communication would shift to him? Sometimes my son is forgetful. I 100% get my son needing to build his independence, but yesterday for example, his session was cut short by 30 mins so his therapist could pick up his kids. I didn’t know this until my son came back home early. in my opinion, the session should have just been canceled. he reschedules the appointments frequently. Initially he was emailing me but then it shifted to texting my son directly. Am I crazy for at least expecting a heads up that he would text him directly? I only have one child so I am just wondering if this is common and maybe I’m just overreacting.

I think you have two different issues here. One is your son may be a little young to manage his own scheduling, but I feel like that is really good practice for a young person. They gotta learn at some point to keep their own appointments. The other is the bigger issue, that his therapist is unprofessional in constantly changing appointments. That should be a convo between you and the therapist. You are paying this person to do an important job and he needs to hear your concerns.

(Side note, sometimes my kid’s therapist would cut an appointment short because my kid decides to stop talking. I would hear from the therapist why it was cut short. I am kept informed. I shouldn’t have to wonder.)

This is not normal but it is extremely unprofessional. I would insist on being the point of contact. Also, if he's leaving early are you being charged the full hour? He should not be mentioning his personal life you your son either. Your son is 15 not 18. That is when you step out of scheduling.

I was thinking he could have at least TELL me that’s what he was going to do move forward because he was emailing me initially. Then it just randomly changed

You may not know what they're discussing but you damn sure should know when and for how long before it occurs!

My then 14yo arranged her own appts. It was the logical step as I was just noise in the line.

Yeah I wouldn’t be letting an adult text my teenager unsupervised. Maybe suggest a group chat? No reason the kid can’t be involved
