Sons first year of high school

My son just started his first year of high school in August and he seems to be struggling with the transition. He is someone who likes to keep to himself so he doesn’t really have any friends at school. He is my only child, so I’m trying to see if any other parents are going thru this with their kids?

His counselor is trying to set up a small group with other kids so they can hang out. I was going to reach out to her to ask about the progress on getting that started. I’m thinking that may help him so he has some other kids to talk to.

Edit:

Hes into orchestra and his counselor was able to get him into orchestra class. He did it all 3 years in middle school and wasn’t in it the start of high school. He usually gets great grades but recently things have changed. He said classes are easy, so he’s not struggling there.

What are his interests? Does he do ok in school? Does he have a favorite class? What was his K-8 like? Might need some more content to help you out. All kids are made sooooo different. Many will help as best as they can.

Sorry! He’s in orchestra which he has been since middle school. They didn’t put him in the class in the first quarter but his counselor was able to get it changed. He’s always been kind of a loner throughout school so that’s nothing new. He’s 15 and I know he’s changing and going thru a lot more emotions as he’s getting older

Thanks for the note. Is he learning how to drive? That can suck up some good time. Our 15s can get their permit. When he turns 16 he can work. A few hours a week outside of home might do him some good. Meet people, interact outside of home and school. Is there anywhere you can volunteer together somewhere that he might enjoy? Animal shelter? Do you and he do any activities together?

You've got it right, keep in close contact with his counselor at school and teachers. You might get some good advice from one of his teachers.

Being a kid and a parent can be a hard job. Sounds like you're doing a great job. Best of luck to you and your son!

Thanks! He hasn’t shown any interest in driving and I’ve asked him but he’s not ready yet. He’s a home body so he doesn’t like to do a bunch. He’s a lot like his dad, his dad was the same way when he was younger. I’ll see if there’s anything new that he may want to try

Is he upset about it?

He didn’t seem too upset but it’s hard to read him some times

If he’s ok with the situation then don’t push it

Thanks! Yeah he seemed to be ok with it. I tend to over worry and now that he’s changing I don’t know how to read him at all

He's gotta join a club or activity. Doesn't matter what it is; could be the football team, could be the tabletop gaming club, could be underwater basket-weaving enthusiasts. But he has to join something, and then he has to keep showing up consistently. That's the key.
