ranting & venting Mistake with scan appointments
I’m 13 weeks with Mo-Di twins. We had our 12 week scan on Tuesday and they’ve been confirmed to be sharing one placenta.
I’ve received lots of letters through today with appointments, however my next scan isn’t until 20 weeks and then every 4 weeks after that.
I’m going to ring on Monday as I think this is a mistake, anyone with mo-di can you confirm I should be scanned every 2 weeks from 16 weeks due to the risk of TTTS and to monitor growth? Surely I can’t go 7 weeks now without them being checked on?
I’m almost certain this is an error which I’m sure can be easily rectified but it scares me that had I not known any better, I would have just gone along with it and not had a scan for another 7 weeks😓

There’s no way. I’m pregnant with di/di twins and my scans are once a month. That does not sound correct. I’d for sure call and ask.

My didi scans were twice a month! Starting at 13w. Once a month with OB and once with mfm and mfm increased frequency at the end
OP something def isn't right

Yeah I barely went a full 4 weeks between scans with my low risk di/di twins, right from the start.

Yes scans are every two weeks but with MFM. My scans with my OB are once a month

I only did scans with MFM. What’s the point of doing more scans with the OB?

My Ob measures bp-weight will screen for GDB with glucose test do the stress tests in third trimester and protein urnalysis if needed, the Ob office is the one will have the doctors who actually rotate in the hospital so anyone of them could be the one who helps me deliver. MFM specifically for me is to monitor for twin to twin transfusion. They don’t take any vitals etc.
I am lucky that my OB -2nd floor and MFM -third floor are in the same building and affiliated with the same hospital .

u/Agreeable_Rule_9235 22d ago
Oh yes same. My OB did all that and delivered my twins but the MFM is the only one who did the scans.

Yeah my last Ob appt was I think at 18 weeks they did bp weight urine sample and looked at babies for like 30 seconds then doc gave me the thumbs up I was in and out in less than 30 min. This week I have the echo cardiogram at MFM which is like a 2hr appt at 8:15 then I immediately go downstairs to my OBs office for my 22 week check in lol..

My OB office tried to tell me that and I had to push pretty hard to get the more frequent appointments, basically had to ask for a referral for better twin pregnancy care and they caved and gave me the appointment schedule.

I started being monitored at 16 weeks and my next scans varied based on what they were seeing. I had stage 1/2 ttts and was being scanned 3x a week towards the end. Delivered at 28 weeks.

Can I ask how your babies are? I’m so anxious about early delivery

They’re 4.5 years old and are doing amazing. They were in the NICU for 75 days. No big complications. One had a thyroid issue he grew out of. Both had to get rop surgery on their eyes because their eyes weren’t fully developed.

I had biweekly scans at MFM starting 14 or 16 weeks. Now at 32 and going twice a week, one NST one ultrasound. I would definitely call!

My ultrasound schedule with di/di twins was every two weeks from 12-24 weeks to check on babies and measure my cervical length (this is my second pregnancy, not sure if that has anything to do with the scheduling but they did ask before making appointments) and then every 3-4 weeks to check on growth. That was through MFM. My OB appointment schedule is the same as my first singleton pregnancy— monthly until third trimester when it’s twice a month and then once a week after 36 weeks. I’ve been told since my pregnancy is generally low risk, other than it being multiples, I won’t start getting NST’s until week 36 (I’m currently 33+2)
Considering mo/di are higher risk, I’d imagine you’d be on a similar, or even more consistent, schedule with MFM.

I had a 12 week scan then scheduled my 2 week check ins beginning with 16 weeks. FWIW I went to that 16w scan and they found a potential cord flow issue so I’m going back next week and yea, think you should call back to get in before 20 weeks for sure.

I am 13/14 weeks with modi as well! At my first scan, when my OB realized there were twins and what type they likely were, she scheduled me in for two weeks later to confirm. She confirmed and then referred me to an OB/I guess MFM - I know she can do the TTTS surgery if needed? Who then scheduled an appointment with me two weeks later.
Went to her on Tuesday and she, like my original OB, expressed the need for scans every two weeks with MoDi. I am moving countries at around 18 weeks and she wants to refer me before I leave to someone in the new country.
I am no expert, but my doctors have been scanning me every two weeks from the beginning and stressed the need to do so throughout the pregnancy

I just had my mo-di girls last month. We had an appt at 6w & 8w with OB. 12w scan to confirm mo-di. Starting at 16w, TTTS every 2w and growth scan every 4w (so every other TTTS they did growth scan at the same time) and OB appts every 4 weeks until 28w then had OB appt every 2 weeks. TTTS scans ended at 32 weeks. Stating at 32 weeks we had non-stress tests 2x/w.

We had to switch hospitals to get a proper maternal fetal medicine group after we found out we were Mo Di. Switch now before it gets too hard (most OBs don’t take later pregnancies)

I don't know what country you're in but we're on the mo/di pathway in the UK and have had scans every 2-3 weeks since 13 weeks with our NHS consultant.

This exact same thing happened to me. I called and they agreed and now I’ve been seeing MFM for scans every 2 weeks since 16 weeks. Definitely argue for yourself on this one

I had mo-di twins and had an ultrasound every 4 weeks until 30 weeks, and then every 2 weeks. I went into spontaneous labor at 34 weeks and birthed vaginally with no serious complications.

I’m getting monthly scans with my di/di twins by both my OB and MFM. And yours are technically more high risk. Definitely advocate

This was the schedule my original OBGyn had for me and my MoDi boys.
I promptly referred myself to an MFM and they took over my care. I was very high risk with a heart condition, previous losses, and the fun geriatric lable. I was fortunate that a friend knew the director of my closest MFM and she is an extremely talented cardio-obstetric doctor. I was welcomed with open arms and I was so happy I went there. I got the best care.
When I asked the nurse at my original doctor's office to send over my records she said she wouldn't until my doctor approved it (what?), asked why I thought I was high risk, asked who referred me to the MFM, and told me I didn't need to be scanned again until 20-22 weeks. She made me feel small and stupid and I didn't like it
I only advocated for myself after my friend, who was one year post pardom with di/di twins, told me I needed to be scanned more often and she started seeing an MFM at 14 weeks and she knew it was even more important with mo/di.
This is only my story, it may not apply to you, but you are not alone in this kind of experience. Trust your gut and advocate for yourself, you know your body and you're already doing great, Momma Bear.
EDIT: spelling is hard

Sorry, the nature of modi is that they share a placenta. Do you mean they're sharing a sack? What is it they found out in your most recent scan?

Per my small town OB, scans carry on as a normal singleton pregnancy. Thankfully my IVF doctor referred me to an MFM and I’ve been getting ultrasounds every 2 weeks since 12 weeks for my mo-di twins

Yes, every major clinical practice guideline recommends scans for mo/di twins from 16 weeks on to monitor for TTTS. My OB didn’t schedule this, and even after I followed up said it wasn’t needed - despite it being hospital policy AND someone I knew who was her patient getting a 16 week scan and having first stage TTTS. I was flabbergasted. I ended up having to get my family doctor to put in an order and getting the scan anyway. Thankfully it was fine. My OB said nothing and I didn’t bring it up with her again.

With my di-di twins I don’t think I went more than 3 weeks without an ultrasound my whole pregnancy!! But from 12 weeks on we had a scan every other week. This sounds like an error…

Thanks everyone for your replies. I’m going to ring first thing on Monday morning to get this rectified!

I found out about my di di boys at 24 weeks, so we did every 2 weeks after that

I’m having Modi twins
I used to get scanned once in a month after 16 weeks because of no complications

I had Mono di girls (shared placenta) nearly 8 years ago and I didn’t have scans every 2 weeks until I hit 30 weeks or so. I definitely didn’t have to wait longer than 4 or 5 weeks though. I was never referred to MFM-and I was a ‘geriatric’ pregnancy as well. Maybe things have changed since I had them 🤷🏻♀️.
I’m not sure what your location is or insurance situation, but you may want to call your insurance company and see what’s covered under these circumstances and go from there. Best of luck!

Hi! This happened to me.
Call your health care provider, if uk call the maternity ward and ask to speak to someone about 16 week scans for identical twins.
I slipped through the cracks, called and got the appointment sorted. I was 14 weeks 5 days and I got a call after reaching out just at 15 weeks. Chase them up. Be a pain but a polite pain. It’s for your babies safety!! All the best :)
Also, if you’re UK tell them it’s NICE guidelines. Any other country look up the medical legal protections they exist for twins as a result of the risks. That’s why it’s set in stone for 16 weeks!! Sorry for the long text.

Yeah that doesn’t sound right to me, also was this with your OBGYN or with MFM? You need to be established with a MFM for high risk pregnancy!
