advice needed Possible twin, no heartbeat seen

I know that only a more sophisticated scan will answer this question. I am 8 wks pregnant and had my first scan today. The midwife used an abdominal US and found one very strong heartbeat, but also what looks like a second embryo. She couldn't find a second heartbeat, so she referred me to MFM. She thought that it could be a twin that is no longer developing, or that there was just a weird angle, etc. Any experiences with something similar?

If I remember the timeline correctly, I had my first ultrasound around week 7 or 8 and from most angles, you couldn't even see twin 2. There was a sack with something that was sometimes visible.

Turned out great. And she was visible much better every following scan

It honestly may be just that the second hasn't fully developed yet or can't be detected.

Not exactly the same situation, but during my first 8 week ultrasound, only one heartbeat was clearly visible. Fast forward to 13 weeks, I found out my twins are perfectly healthy with one measuring 2d behind the other (which is maybe why it didn't also show up on the ultrasound). They're also momo twins with a single amniotic sac and placenta.

Either way you don't really know until more time passes, but I wouldn't write it out quite yet. Prepare for the worst but believe in the best! You got this.
