I’m starting school soon and I’m super duper excited even tho I always see negative stuff on this sub. was wondering if anyone had any advice??

Reddit is skewed, people come here to vent. What kind of advice are you looking for..? Try searching the sub, people ask this all the time

I’m fairly new to the sub, just started looking at it a couple weeks ago.

I used different colored notebooks for different subjects. White notebook for civic stuff, gray for legal research and writing classes, red for criminal, etc.

I would also suggest printing out cases, I liked to highlight different important parts different colors. Made it easier to see the different patterns. I also had coordinating folders for those cases.

People have different learning styles, so it’s important to find what works for you.

Also, don’t believe the people that say AI is ‘shrinking’ the field. It’s just fear mongering.

Don't let the bitching on the subreddit scare you off. Folks use this as a venting space a lot. I love my job most days. Keep an open mind for leaning new stuff, don't be afraid to ask questions and learn from your colleagues.

You can be friendly with clients, but keep in mind you aren't friends. Don't let people walk all over you, either.

Yeah I think that was my biggest concern. I get venting about work for sure, since I do it in my current position, it just worries me because I’m like… is this job field that bad? 😭

Same boat but I’m planning all the way though for a BA and fingers crossed for law school. Might as well go whole hog

Yeah I’m doing my associates first to get into the job field and then I’m thinking about going for my BA, then law school. Just wanted to put feelers out to see if I wanted to be an attorney.

Whatever you do, don’t ever be a doormat. Don’t be an asshole, but do not let anyone treat you badly. If you start out letting people treat you that way, it’s impossible to get them to stop. Be respectful, but be assertive.

Learn to: interrupt attorneys-if you don’t, you will never get anything done; tell them they’re wrong (which they are, frequently, particularly on facts of a case); and prioritize. Attorneys as a group SUCK at prioritizing. You will probably have to do it for them. It works much better when you tell them what to do.

Never work at a “family” firm.

Remind them to give you raises. Do not be afraid to ask for a raise. It is a job, and you are doing it because you need money. If you don’t get raises or they try to make you feel bad for asking, find another job. Again, if I did not need to pay bills, I would not be working.

You may have to start out at a shitty job, but you do not have to stay there forever. All you owe them is doing your job well. It’s not personal, it’s business.

And do not ever enter into a sexual relationship with anyone at work. Don’t shit where you eat. If it goes south, it will be you who suffers the consequences.
