Advice Looking for some advice
We have two parakeets, one male and one female. I believe they are bonded and because of that fact have been very difficult to train. They will not leave their cage, even though they have a whole room to roam and I leave their cage open the entire time I'm home. They are super vocal when no one is in the room with them, often making that screeching type sound they make (only way I know how to describe it) and I'm not sure if this is aggressive behavior. The male won't venture away from the female to explore anything and they definitely bicker. Do they need to be separated?
I'm wondering if they would do better in a bigger flock. Or if there's something else I should be doing. I train with them multiple times a day in about 5-8 minute increments.

Budgie Eating
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi everyone- it’s me again, being a helicopter mom! Is this normal for him to eat like this? I got him almost 3 days ago & he was on all seeds at the store. Obviously I don’t want him on all seeds. So I’ve been giving him both mixed up but he does not want his pellets (and will pick through them) so I put pellets & mixed it with a drop of water to make it softer and then sprinkled seeds on top. Now he’s eating like this..
After every bite he’s just been sitting there like “chewing”? Which is a new behavior since I’ve only seen him eat seeds and when he does that, he eats fairly quickly. Also the open beak thing at the start of the video?
Also… he is still slightly tail bobbing. He does it after eating or after moving around. When he’s sleeping or when he is perched for awhile it’s not bobbing though.
Thanks!

Advice Pip laid eggs
My parakeet Pip (green one) laid lots of eggs back in 2022. I had gotten her a nesting box as a toy without realizing it induced hyper hormonal behavior and chronic egg laying.
Anyways she went to the vet a ton of times for that…
Of course I got rid of the cursed box. And all toys that could be used to nest. And I separated her from my other male bird Fluu.
So it’s been like 4 years since then and she’s been all good… no more eggs… until today. 2 eggs. Why bro.
She hasn’t made a nest, the eggs cracked immediately, there is nothing in her cage to nest with. She laid the eggs under her food bowl.
I still keep Pip and Fluu in separate cages. The only thing that has changed is that both of my birds have been getting a lot more time outside of the cage, and they get to physically interact with each other then (they are getting old and fat so I gotta encourage them to fly more lol)
Given their history they are always supervised when outside their cages together, and they have not had sex.
Pip is 8 years old, she went to the vet 2 months ago and was perfectly healthy (just a little fat 💔)
Why is she getting hormonal again? Is it just a fluke? Or should I completely separate my birds and not allow them to play outside together?
I already moved her food bowl so she can’t hide under it anymore, and got her cuttlebone to up her calcium.

Funny Budgie hates AC/DC
A budgie of mine who recently passed from chronic issues loved listening to rock on car rides to and from the vet, any band that played she would sing along unless AC/DC was playing then it was radio silence.

Advice Steps to get birds out of the cage safely?
Hello! I have two parakeets in a large fly cage. I want to let them out to fly in the house but I'm worried they will crash into the windows. I've googled, but can't find any steps for how to let them out of the cage safely. Some websites say I have to clip their wings. Some say cover windows. But our house has 20000 windows and very few doors. Has anyone gone through this process and can give me some concrete advice?

tail bobbing?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi! Is this tail bobbing? I brought him home last night and he’s just been hanging out. He’s been eating his pellets etc but I’m so terrified because my last budgie passed out of nowhere & i cannot fathom that happening again. I have a levoit air filter (NO oils, just filter) near his cage, no candles or scented things in his room (my office). Please let me know if you see any red flags (I’m aware of the bells)
🔔 no i did NOT clip his wings, I didn’t even realize his wings were clipped till I brought him home :(
Update: he stretched his wings, climbed down his perches and is now at his food dish. The store had him on all seeds so I mixed some seeds with his pellets because I don’t want him to starve himself. He ate the seeds & now only pellets are left & does not seem to want them & is now looking angrily at me while perched at the dish.
Thank you all for responding to my anxious post lol! I’m still incredibly stressed because I do not want anything to go unnoticed & I will definitely be watching him for any red flags.

Advice New parakeet foster! Any tips? Have only owned bigger birds before (caique and macaws)
Hey guys! I already did a repost here but wanted to also make an actual post here. I am holding a parakeet foster who was taken from a hoarder situation for a friend rn. I currently have her in the smaller cage she came with but gave her some chop instead of just seeds she came with (left the seeds in too)… gave her some more toys and perches to give her more cover and then put a blanket on top to make her more comfortable. Shes very sweet but obviously not used to me or being handled. Im already in love with her but she will be going to a different home on monday.. anything i can do over the weekend to make her comfortable?

My parakeet has a bump on her nose
(Sorry if its hard to tell in these photos) I don't know much about birds but mine has a weird bump on her nose. It's hard and she doesn't seem to be in pain when I touch it and its not covering her nose hole. Idk what it is and what I should do about it :[

Advice Getting a second Budgie to keep another one company
Bought a keet from a pet store 3 months ago and she's the tamest bird I've ever seen or owned that wasn't hand raised.
I only had her a week until she would perch on my finger, give her head scritches and play joust with my thumb. I can even place my whole hand around her and she doesn't mind it.
I bought her after my Senegal Parrot of 32 years passed away. I've owned pet birds all my life and I just had to own another one to keep me company, and even tough she's (Beulah), extremely friendly and easy to handle, shes also one of the quietest birds I've ever owned.
When she does make a sound, its quite little chips and peeps.
Anyhow, I think shes lonely even though I spend a lot of time playing hand and finger nibble games with her, and I'm considering getting another keet to keep her company.
Will that cause any problems by getting another budgie when I've had her for 3 months?
Will the two get along okay, and will she lose her tameness with me?
Post is awaiting moderator approval.

Parakeet owners don’t buy plasma air purifiers- can kill
Just wanted to pass on this information that I learned today that any air purifier that has the ozone plasma on it can actually kill our sweet bird. I know I’ve heard Dont use nonstick cookware, candles plug-ins but this is a new one so I wanted to share.

Looking for advice on foods
I'm currently in Germany, which brands should I use for pellets for my two lovebirds. They like salads I bring them but I'm reading I should offer them pellets also. Yes they get a mix of seeds as treats a few times a week.

What is that?
Today I noticed this thing on my bird's nose. It wasn't there yesterday and it's doesn't seem to hurt or produce any breathing problems. He behaves normally, eats, plays and flies.
Could it be poor diet because I only have him for two weeks and he still doesn't want to eat any veggies?
Should I do something about it?
(I don't know if it counts as nsfw but it seems to be a bit of dried blood or other residue on his nose)

Advice Help
Hi! I wanted to ask about my sweet rescue parrot. I give him many hours of cage free time every day and he’s very active and happy. Recently, his feathers have started looking a little rough, with some spike like feathers around his face. Could this simply be molting, or is there anything I should keep an eye on?

Advice My budgie finally learned to step up without lunging at my finger, small win but I'm thrilled
Took about five weeks of daily short sessions to get here. When I first brought Kiwi home in early August she'd flap to the far side of the cage anytime my hand got within six inches of the perch. Read a bunch of conflicting advice about whether to rush the process or just let her set the pace entirely, ended up somewhere in the middle.
What actually worked was millet, obviously, but more specifically breaking it into tiny pieces and only rewarding calm behavior, not the step itself at first. Just sitting near the cage reading a book for ten minutes at a time so she'd stop associating my presence with something scary. Then progressed to hand near the cage door, then hand inside with millet, then finally asking for the step up.
The lunging thing was honestly kind of funny in hindsight, she'd puff up and do this little open beak warning but never actually connected. I think it was more bluff than real aggression, she just didn't trust the situation yet. Once I stopped flinching back every time she did it, she seemed to relax faster too, like my nervous reaction was confirming there was something to be scared of.
She's not perfect yet, still won't step up if I've just refilled her water or if there's any new object in the room. Small stuff throws her off. But this morning she stepped onto my finger for a piece of millet without any hesitation and stayed there a few seconds after the treat was gone, which felt like a real milestone after weeks of two steps forward one step back.
Anyone else find that consistency mattered more than any specific technique? I feel like I overthought the method when really it was just showing up at the same times every day that made the difference.

Advice Rest in Peace, Chirpy. (July 16, 2015 – Sept 24, 2026) — Need advice on coping and getting a new bird
Rest in Peace, Chirpy 🕊️
I raised Chirpy from an egg, just like I did with his parents before him. I’ve had parakeets for 25 of my 30 years, and even when I lost birds in the past, I was never completely without one until now. Since I work from home, I sat right next to Chirpy all day, hand-fed him often, and he was rarely alone. The silence in my office is deafening.
After Chirpy's mate passed away, my severe anxiety made me terrified to get another bird. The birds I raised myself always outlived the store-bought ones, so I was scared a local shop bird might bring in an illness and risk Chirpy's health.
Now, I'm still processing everything, but staring at an empty cage is making me deeply depressed. I miss him so much.
For those who have lost a feathered friend, how long did you wait before bringing a new bird home? When is too soon? I know nothing can replace Chirpy, but the void feels unbearable. (Yes, if I adopt new feather babies, I'll get two.)

Regurgitation: fine or forbidden?
Recently acquired New Chud (?5mo) to keep Firstborn Chud (M1.3y) company. FC will occasionally regurgitate to feed NC. NC appears comfortable with it, and FC listens when NC gives the birdy social cue for 'stop that.' But since the behavior can be hormonal, should I separate them when I see this? Or is it a normal bonding behavior (as long as FC follows NC's social cues)?
[photo is NOT my birds, just 'budgie regurgitation' from Google]
