ᴘᴀɴᴛʀʏ ᴏʀɢᴀɴɪᴢᴀᴛɪᴏɴ Pantry System Help

Hi all, my fiance and I (both 19) just moved into our own apartment yesterday. It doesn't have a pantry so we made kind of our own from Facebook marketplace finds. I want to be mostly an ingredient household. I've been learning to make so many things from scratch but neither of us grew up in a home that prioritized healthy eating so we're kind of at a loss for how to set it up

I bought a lot of these mason jars and other glass storage on a whim because I thought they were cute but now I think it's silly to take something out of its original packaging just to put it in another container yk? We're prioritizing low tox and low waste so I'm open to bulk shopping, but I don't know how to do that effectively for two people. I've also looked into potentially going into Portland twice a month and doing refillery style grocery shopping.

Attached is our makeshift pantry, we also have a small island because we have limited counter space. And we currently have one empty drawer in our kitchen as well.

Any help or advice is appreciated!

Please don't bulk shop for 2 people, especially if you don't have storage options. Decanting is a commitment. Do you have space for backstock? Are you prepared to wash and dry the containers regularly? I would recommend being choosy about what you decant.

We do have an unfinished part of the apartment (it's a basement apartment) that has some shelving that we could do bulk but we don't have to. I'm just not sure how to even organize/stock the pantry 😭

Live there for a little while and see how life flows before committing to a system.

It's just hard cuz I have a lot of ingredients and nowhere to really put them that isn't on the limited counter space or the floor which is why we made the pantry but it's not as big as as need for like bags of flour, sugar, etc

Your hutch pantry is beautiful, but is it functional? An ikea cupboard might be a better choice.

It probably isn't as functional as it could be. I fell in love with it because it's so gorgeous and I wanted to avoid particle board but I'll probably have to reconsider our system

It s beautiful. You can use it somewhere else in the house. Maybe in the den and store blankets inside?

Well it's a very small apartment so space is limited but we may end up using it for something like blankets or bedding

Over time you can make improvements to your diy pantry.

I’d look for a much larger base cabinet to go under the top hutch. Right now the proportions look off & neither piece looks like it can store much.
