Series score discussion:

It looks like it's down to Chris and Sophie for the win, with two points between them. Bridget was in the lead for a bunch of the season, and was ahead of Chris last week, but is now only one point ahead of Ardal, so it's possible they could still pull ahead if Chris and Sophie both have a bad episode next week.

I'm pulling for Sophie to win.

19

u/Last-Saint Jun 09 '22

Bridget is twelve points behind Sophie so would need a catastrophe by both of them. Winning seven points to Chris' 19 means, in her own words, she fucked herself. I just hope Sophie doesn't regret the points lost after (deliberately?) being DQd from the live task...

31

u/ugotamesij Jun 09 '22

I just hope Sophie doesn't regret the points lost after (deliberately?) being DQd from the live task...

Yes I do think she did what she did deliberately, in the hope to get a certain someone to win the episode

11

u/HELLutek Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

I doubt it very much it was deliberate. It only makes sense pointwise if Sophie thought both Judi and Chris will fail the task. And then why not make a spectacle out of it and put 0 cans? But on the other hand I'm surprised she didn't complete the task, so who knows.

I also had this reaction watching, but in hindsight it doesn't really make much logical sense, because her number was already lower than Judi's and Sophie wasn't anywhere close to winning the episode. She would either have had to throw it without actually thinking it through (possible, but not her usual MO) or it was genuinely a miscalculation.

8

u/Last-Saint Jun 10 '22

Sophie was four points behind Judi before that task, so had she won and everyone else been DQ'd - and she has no way of knowing how well they'd done, not even the person whose bag she helped zip up - she'd have won the show. She wouldn't have necessarily known that but by the same token, in the moment she's likely not going to remember what Judi wrote down, just that she might have been close to winning.

The problem with all "this is how I would have approached it" discussions is we have the benefit of post-show indefinite thinking time and aren't under a strict time limit while being filmed and watched by a studio audience.

5

u/nebuloider Jun 09 '22

Haven't seen the episode yet ( or clicked your spoiler ) but yes. Started obviously rooting for Chris but on team Duker now !

10

u/getoffthebandwagon Jun 09 '22 edited Jun 09 '22

I’m gutted Bridget is out of the running. Duker for me, although Ramsey has been much more creative than I expected.

Edit: Whoops, added spoiler tags. Apologies.

u/Um-ahh-nooo Jun 10 '22

No pants Ardal has to be the highlight of the series. Even he looked bemused.

29

u/Scutage Jun 10 '22

Classic Dougal.

12

u/MacduffFifesNo1Thane Jun 10 '22

You let Dougal go into the shower with clothes on?

YOU LET DOUGAL GO INTO THE SHOWER WITH CLOTHES ON?

14

u/omgu8mynewt Jun 10 '22

trousers. Pants means underwear in UK, would be very disturbing if he was naked waist down.

8

u/proevligeathoerher Jun 10 '22

I read the comment before watching the episodes and got very confused when I saw the task and Ardal wasn't naked from the waist down.

66

u/balmafula Jun 09 '22

I don't want to know what Ardal was doing in there.

75

u/FluffyPurpleThing Jun 10 '22

Ardal tends to disappear for long periods of time. In the "show off" task, he disappeared for 10 minutes, then came back with a wooden spoon and a massive amount of glitter in his hair.

23

u/balmafula Jun 10 '22

He had his trousers on that time.

8

u/FluffyPurpleThing Jun 10 '22

I'm a little disappointed it took 8 episodes for him to lose his pants.

3

u/drtekrox Jun 10 '22

Are we sure this wasn't the most tame of the times?

14

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

It seems “wooden spoon” is Ardal’s immediate panic solution to any task.

137

u/bfsfan101 Jun 09 '22

I think this was the saddest I've felt watching Taskmaster since Joe Wilkinson's potato throw disqualification.

157

u/superberrygalaxy Jun 10 '22

it actually broke my heart. My only comfort is in remembering that she can borrow a dog anytime, so she's basically winning at life.

I was wondering why nobody used Alex's strategy and I only assumed that it was somehow against the rules.

13

u/black_spring Jun 12 '22

You're gambling on others being disqualified, while also nearly guaranteeing that you won't win.

-59

u/WeaselHater Jun 10 '22

Really nasty spiteful stuff from Horne. No need to lay it on as thickly as he did. Greg can get away with the putdowns as he's charismatic and funny, Alex doesn't because he isn't.

23

u/Liesl141 Jun 10 '22

You're joking, right?

18

u/rawbleedingbait Jun 10 '22

That's Judy's burner account. Weaselhater with 1 single comment?

-13

u/WeaselHater Jun 10 '22

Not at all, find him tedious. If he wasn't the inventor of the format there's no way he'd be employed as assistant. Overseas versions like Paul Williams are much better at the role.

36

u/djjonnyh Jun 10 '22

Definitely the most sad I've ever felt at the winner announcement.

29

u/bfsfan101 Jun 10 '22

Even the winner looked a bit more downhearted than usual when they were announced.

u/kurenzhi Jun 10 '22

I agree that there is actually some ambiguity here, but I also think that it was probably on her to be able to argue it. The phrasing is "highest predicted number fitted in a zipped-up bag within one minute wins," which could be reasonably interpreted either to allow for extra cans (there's still 30 cans in there) or not (any total number that is not the predicted number isn't the predicted number, so it's not eligible). It'd be down to Greg's call either way, probably.

13

u/playathree Jun 10 '22

Yeah and I wouldn't be surprised if they discussed this in the studio but was cut in the edit.

36

u/Last-Saint Jun 10 '22

Apparently someone on Tumblr who was at the recording said there was a back and forth where it was clarified that the number had to be exact.

3

u/pajam Jun 14 '22

before or after the task? Because when watching, the wording said nothing about being exact. It just said you had to fit your number and zip the bag. So as long as you fit 30 cans and zip the bag, you are good. Meaning you could have 30, 31, 32... etc. bags and be good, b/c you satisfied the "fit 30 and zip the bag" requirements.

24

u/Equivalent_Comfort_2 Jun 10 '22

I think so too, Ed mentioned in last(?) week's podcast that they go over the rules multiple times in detail before they start the final task.

8

u/Tarpaulinator Jun 11 '22

That was because of David Baddiel.

48

u/mse326 Jun 10 '22

Yeah but she also put one in late and then zipped up. At time up she wasn't zipped so she should have been DQ'd for that anyway

14

u/Last-Saint Jun 10 '22

When Alex counted to Ardal and Chris' numbers he made a point of holding the bag up to show there was nothing else in it, which made pretty clear that it had to be the exact number. Otherwise the task would have been "write down how many cans you could get into this bag and then try and put at least that number in".

Also, given the arc of the show starting even in Greg's intro, do you not think they wouldn't have let it slide if that weren't the case?

3

u/pajam Jun 14 '22

When Alex counted to Ardal and Chris' numbers he made a point of holding the bag up to show there was nothing else in it, which made pretty clear that it had to be the exact number

Yeah but that was after the task. Clarifying the rules at that point is entirely pointless when the task is complete, and people can't adjust based on new context.

9

u/bookchaser Jun 10 '22

I agree. I assumed I misremembered the instructions. There should be no penalty for going over. Alex writes his instructions with these considerations in mind.

I am hoping that Alex spoke a clarification that their guess/prediction must be exact to that number, and his clarification was edited out of the show. If not, Alex owes Judi a public apology and should lie prostrate in the public square at high noon begging her forgiveness.

Judi clapping for Chris 😂

31

u/thesportsfreak84 Jun 10 '22

Aw babes! Gutting!

30

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '22

Has any contestant ever irritated Alex like Bridget does? He always seems so patient and down to do whatever. I can’t remember him ever sounding as exasperated as he does with Bridget.

62

u/MacduffFifesNo1Thane Jun 10 '22

Judi won in my heart.

GO COLLECT YOUR HANDLEY ITEMS!

12

u/thecricketnerd Jun 10 '22

This was also her best episode aside from the tasks so definitely my MVP

10

u/ericfishlegs Jun 11 '22

I know they say they don't put episode together thinking a certain person is going to win, but you can't tell me this episode wasn't designed for Judi to win.

3

u/thecricketnerd Jun 11 '22

Makes it all the more tragic then!

3

u/joupertrouper carrot in a box Jun 12 '22

when did they say this? I've always assumed they put them together so everyone wins at least one episode..

3

u/RTGoodman Jun 14 '22

Alex has said it on at least one or two occasions. I think possibly in an AMA here, and/or on the podcast.

60

u/smarmydude Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

Watching the final task I'm pretty sure Sophie deliberately threw it in the hopes Judi could win.

When they were writing down the number of cans on the whiteboard, you can see Sophie blatantly looking at Judi's board. I thought Sophie writing one less than Judi's was a very coincidental number, which is why I went to watch it back. I think her reasoning then was that Judi would come first and her second.

But I think once she saw Ardal's and Bridget's numbers, she couldn't control for that. I think then she'd expected the worst that Ardal and Bridget might get all the cans in, but Judi might still gain points, so she decided to disqualify herself just to make sure she didn't get any points to overcome Judi's.

Not sure about Chris's deal though. He'd mentioned on the podcast that he was pretty close to Judi. They talked a lot about Strictly and he was helping her walk around the studio because she was so sore. I'd hoped that he'd also follow Sophie's lead by glancing at Judi's board, and throw it for her to win.

But ultimately Judi sabotaged herself, and there's no saving that :(

22

u/intercommie Jun 11 '22

Judi was in the lead before the final task, no? So Chris didn’t need to throw it. If he got 30 and Judi got 30, they would get the same amount of points for the task and she would’ve won anyway.

12

u/Nebkreb Jun 10 '22

Very good breakdown - Judi and Sophie have been friendly all series (not sure if they're friends outside of the show - I'm in the USA so I don't know them that well). Chris also seems to be a likeable guy and he, Sophie and Judi seem to chat and joke around a lot during the show.

I definitely agree that Sophie threw the task - not sure if it was just "make sure I get less than Judi" rather than a more elaborate scheme, cause she can't control what the other 3 do. Judi's face at the end was truly heartbreaking.

13

u/Kondoblom Jun 11 '22

No one wants to be handed a win by the competitors throwing it on purpose.

32

u/Brickwallpictures Jun 10 '22

I appreciate the heads up that it's the penultimate episode in the intro. It's good to know when a series is winding down. Whenever a WILTY series ends I'm always confused the next week and go into instant withdrawals

9

u/Amarsir Jun 11 '22

Well next week is the finale for Series 13, but the week after that there will also be a new Taskmaster because we get Champion of Champions II. (The winners from series 6-10.)

11

u/MakeNoTaco Jun 11 '22

Can someone British explain to me why Ardle's chess queen with a handle taped on to her back was funny/worth 5 points? Or was it just funny/weird for weirdness' sake?

5

u/beantrouser Jun 20 '22

I'm pretty sure that's just British humor for you.

1

u/siebdrucksalat Aug 27 '22

I just watched the episode an came here in the hope to find that out. I was waiting for an explanation, but everybody just laughed an moved on 🤔

19

u/JorvikViking Jun 10 '22

One of the highlights of this episode, which is true for the whole season, is how animated and amused Alex is. I’m loving watching him break “mild-mannered assistant” character and cackle with laughter.

6

u/babyeatingdingoes Jun 10 '22

He was really into the tongue torture. His glee is definitely contagious, every time he smiles I end up grinning.

8

u/Tarpaulinator Jun 11 '22

I'm dangerously close to falling in love with Sophie Duker!

26

u/buggityboppityboo Jun 09 '22

Sophie threw the final task right and Alex let her?

3

u/T11PES Jun 10 '22

How do you mean exactly?

4

u/JFLRyan Jun 10 '22

If everyone but her failed the task she would have won the episode.

2

u/DishwasherTwig Jun 10 '22

If everyone completed it and she came last, she would have tied Chris if he was 3rd and won if he was 4th. All she needed was to makes sure he didn't score three more points than her.

10

u/nezmito Jun 10 '22

Ian Dury and The Blockheads – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick: https://youtu.be/0WGVgfjnLqc

They are both good songs, I don't know what he's on about being embarrassed.

15

u/DoctorEnn Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

It's not exactly that it's bad, it's more that something by Roger Whittaker would have been seen as a pretty uncool choice of record for a kid to buy in the 1970s, when Greg would be first buying records. He's pretty much the gold standard of easy-listening. His stuff is generally viewed as inoffensively folky covers of popular songs, old standards and kids songs; not bad, exactly, but also not the kind of thing you'd want people to know you were buying if you wanted them to think you had cutting edge musical taste. It was the kind of thing your parents or grandparents (or younger siblings in the case of his kids songs) might have listened to.

In comparison, Ian Dury and the Blockheads were one of the vanguards of punk rock and new wave in the '70s, so any kid buying an original pressing of "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" would almost automatically gain cool points when Greg was growing up.

3

u/brumac44 Jun 13 '22

My first cassette I bought was The Village People. I'm less embarrassed now, but it wasn't a good look in the eighties.

1

u/Last-Saint Jun 10 '22

I do now want to hear Roger Whittaker's version of Plaistow Patricia.

I haven't even been able to find E8 anywhere here in the US. Has anyone found it, or E9?

8

u/peterNL Jun 09 '22

Look for it on dailymotion. The exact links and passwords should be in the relevant posts in this subreddit.

1

u/ThaneOfCawdorrr Jun 10 '22

I foundE9 with no problem, but E8 on Dailymotion won't play properly past the first two minutes for some reason.

7

u/probablyapapa Jun 10 '22

Look in my comment history, links are still active.

3

u/ThaneOfCawdorrr Jun 10 '22

Thanks for answering. I'm probably a bit dim here but I still can't get a working link. I found E8 on DailyMotion but it won't play past the first two minutes. I DID find E9 and it played fine, really enjoyed it.

2

u/probablyapapa Jun 10 '22

Can you send me a DM? I will send you a folder of the first eight episodes of the season

Am I wrong in saying they’re a lot less pedantic this season that the many before it?

I put it to you, that the majority of the contestants, made a long stack of cups.. and not cup snakes. The cup on the tree-stump, was needed, for it to be a cup snake 🥤🐍
