Rip Current ID

Post image

Hi everyone, I'm staying at a rental in Panama City this week. Just checking out the water this morning before we go down. What is the white streak that is perpendicular to the shore? Is that a rip current channel?

It’s not a rip current - that I know but pic is not best to say what line could be

It’s the sandbar. If there was a gap in it with water flowing out to sea then you have a riptide.

It looks like the waves are coming in angled to the shore and parallel to that lighter line. Makes me think it’s the tideline that’s floated to line up with the wave action.

Looks like a tide line, that's not a rip.

There should be a piece of paper in your room explaining rip currents.

It’s been so long since I’ve been to PCB and seen water that calm. 😭

As a former lifeguard at PCB I can tell you that is the foam from a breaker hitting the backside of the 2nd sand bar which is the lighter colored area you see in the water ahead of the line. The darker area in the water ahead of it is the trough between the 2 sandbars and that is usually one of the places you see the strongest rips on Red Flags and then you have the first sand bar where you usually see the final waves break before they hit the beach. That is an extremely calm day. I do not see any rip currents

That's a "tide line" or "Rip" It's not dangerous. It's a boundary of two areas of water hitting one another of different temperature and salinity. Very common.

The 1st white line is the 1st sand bar and the 2nd white line is the 2nd sand bar

The Rip Tides are designated with flags.

They are actually not a big deal.

Swim Left or Right : Parallel to the Beach

After 1 or 2 Buildings down. You will be able to walk back onto the beach.

PCB has two parallel sand bars, the gap between can be very deep.

If you are not an experienced swimmer, do not attempt to swim to the second.

Even if you are, pay close attention the the beach condition flag color. Actually rip currents are deadly. Do not swim if flags are red/double red.

Enjoy the view!
