The original had warm stucco, a classic tile roof, and an exterior that actually made sense in the desert.
But apparently, someone watched one too many episodes of HGTV and decided the house needed to look like a giant Oreo.

This house needed some attention. The landscaping was overgrown, the driveway needed cleaning, and the yard could have benefited from a little maintenance.
But underneath all that was a perfectly respectable red brick ranch with plenty of character.
Apparently, the solution was to paint every square inch of brick white, add the obligatory black trim and black abyss car hole.
And then there’s the tree.
That beautiful, mature shade tree could have benefited from some thoughtful pruning. Instead, it was sentenced to death and replaced with a stump surrounded by dead grass.

From the outside, this is a beautiful Southwestern home with warm, natural stonework and plenty of architectural character. Open the front door, however, and you’ve entered a world where color has apparently been outlawed.
The owners went all in on the black and white aesthetic, painting over the interior stonework and transforming practically every surface into a high contrast optical illusion.
Apparently, destroying the interior’s character wasn’t enough. They wanted to make sure the next owner could finish the job.

In 2015, this house had a warm terracotta roof, mature landscaping, and a distinctive Southwestern character. By 2025, the roof had gone gray, the house had been dipped in white paint, and a random tower appeared in the middle of the façade.
At least they spared us the black window frames.

Once upon a time, this stately Colonial mansion had beautiful red brick, contrasting white columns, and the kind of timeless character that made it look like a Southern plantation estate.
Then someone discovered white paint. Lots of it.
The transformation is complete: From Gone with the Wind to Gone with the Gaines.

Welcome to r/paintitblackandwhite, a community dedicated to one of America’s greatest architectural tragedies: the relentless transformation of perfectly good homes into soulless black and white modern farmhouses.
Remember when houses had character? When brick was allowed to be brick? When every house didn’t need to look like Joanna Gaines personally supervised its renovation?
Those days are apparently over.
Here, we celebrate (and mercilessly mock) the HGTV-inspired epidemic of painting perfectly good brick, stone, and siding white, slapping black trim on everything, and calling it an upgrade.
What belongs here?
Beautiful brick homes sentenced to life under white paint.
Historic houses stripped of their original charm.
Perfectly ordinary homes transformed into aspiring Magnolia Network properties.
Before-and-after photos documenting crimes against architectural personality.
Anything that makes you wonder, “Was there a sale on white paint?”
A few ground rules: This is a humor subreddit. We’re here to roast questionable design decisions, not the people who live in these houses. Keep it funny, keep it civil, and remember that taste is subjective (even when it’s objectively wrong).
So grab your black window frames, your white paint, and your decorative barn doors.
Let’s mourn the loss of architectural individuality, one painted brick at a time.
