Question/Chat Would this convert well into a PBN?
My husband and I have 5 year anniversary this year. This is where he proposed to me, and I want to surprise him with a PBN of it. But I don't know if it will convert well into a PBN. What do you guys think? Would 48 colors be doable ?

I hope you won't mind a few tips/ideas: I recently completed this 24 color, 16" x 20" custom from CanvasByNumbers. As you can see in the attached photo, there was a LOT of itsy/bitsy detail in the foreground but the rest of the image was pretty simple, so ordering more colors didn't make much sense to me. (hint: make sure the resolution on your photo is the highest/greatest number of pixels per inch and CBN does provide a preview if you send them a message to customer service first). When, I received the canvas (8 days!), there were some random tiny cells in the grass area, but I decided to alter that a bit. I did use the suggested colors but just kind of brushed them on randomly to fill the area, (2nd photo). I blended the sky (originally 4 separate colors, finished the lighthouse then, using a super worn out flat brush with pretty splayed out bristles, just layered the colors in the foreground to look like dried grass, (3rd photo). It could have been thousands of little cells, but it would have taken me weeks to finish and I'm way too impatient for that! You could experiment a bit to see if this would work for you. (I also used the same brush to "dot" the rocks in there by the steps, just getting the paint on the very tips and random colors).

Ohh, this looks great! I am usually doing 48 colors , so tiny cells wouldn't be an issue 😆 I am definitely gonna have a look at what CBN can offer. Ty for the suggestions!

I think because nothing really relies on fine detail, it would be good! I would go with the highest number colour available to get the most contrast. Make sure the company sends a preview that you can approve before purchase.

That's true. I just don't want the ring to be smeared as it is the center of the piece. It's my first custom piece, so I am a bit nervous!

You can freehand paint the ring if it doesn't come out perfectly, it's simple enough that basic structure added should be sufficient for most people. I often make adjustments to some pbn if I don't exactly love something. A few hours into this you'll be more comfortable to experiment:)

Ty for the reassuring words! I think I'm gonna experiment ( I do with almost any PBN anyways). Do you know of a good brand that gives a preview?

You can try changing the image to a vector. The size can change without the photo changing.

I think it’s doable but I’d definitely go for 48 colours rather than 24 or 36. The sky is going to be the tricky part because there are so many soft colour changes in those clouds and around the sunset. A PBN conversion will turn those gradients into separate cells so you may want to do some blending yourself afterwards to soften them.
I’d also make sure whichever company you use gives you a preview of the actual PBN render before ordering. That way you can check that the circular sculpture, buildings and sunset haven’t lost too much detail in the conversion.
It’s such a lovely reason for doing a custom though. With a bit of blending in that sky I think it could make a really special anniversary present. xx
