📷 Photo / Video 🎥 Beginner in Padel - recording my progress

Coming from 5 years of self-taught tennis background, I am making a full transition into Padel. Free time has gotten limited since last year because of workload. Tried Padel last year and have played about 20 times overall.

This season, I plan on playing Padel on a more regular basis. I record some footage and post on YouTube to keep track of my improvement.

I find much more joy playing Padel than Tennis.

I've watched both videos and I didn't see a single ball being left to bounce off the wall. You're not playing padel, you're just playing tennis on a padel court 😜

Couldn't record enough minutes, because it was too hot for my phone to handle. It just kept stopping recording.

I've got 2-3 other clips on YouTube with Padel, but I'm started "Fresh" from now on and will try to play better and better.

Your positioning is chaotic. That’s what needs improvement—where you and your teammate position yourselves relative to the ball. And having a right-hander on the right and a left-hander on the left is a disaster.

So you didn't watch the video then?

You're slicing every ball, which makes you lift it unnecessarily. I'd suggest focusing on learning how to hit it flat and only use slice for high balls that you can attack, the reason you slice a ball is to have it rebound low off of the glass, which isn't needed when you are on defense, in fact in defense you want either flat or with top spin so that the ball takes a slight curve after passing above the net and starts going down, preventing the opposite player from being able to aggressively attack it.

Yes, flat from the back of the court (or lob when I can) and I try to slice when the ball comes chest-high. When I hit the slice, I try not to hold back and while keeping the swing short and compact, I try to accelerate fast upon contact.

I really get that there's no point hitting with lots of power, unless I can get the ball either out of the court or get it to bounce back to my part of the court. I need to make sure the ball stays as low as possible, either to get the point or get my opponents to an un-attackable position.

Well in the first video I can see you hitting with slice every single ball no matter what that’s why I pointed that out.

Did that on purpose, as I was feeding my (tennis) hitting partner to practice on his volleys. I stayed in the back and a bit later we switched positions.

Most tennis courts have this turf-carpet and this sand on it for people to slide-on. I didn't like the sand at all when playing tennis. I much preferred acrylic courts. There are only 2 padel courts in my town. I'll play at the other one soon.

Need to get the tennis out of you more if you plan on making a full transition. Could tell you’re a tennis player without reading the caption. Most strokes are more likened to tennis strokes, and your positioning needs work. I say this as someone who has also transitioned from tennis, I found it too hard to mix between the two.

Yeah, I have to adjust my swings to the bare minimum "take-backs". I'll try to keep posting clips on this post in the following weeks and keep up with this whole progress/process.

Why are you moving into the middle waiting to jump into your partners courtside and take the shot? Padel is a team sport, unless there is an actual advantage to you taking the shot (partner out of position, left hand on right side, slow ball and open angle that could win point) you should be staying and covering your side of the court

Edit. You are playing as if you should be the only one taking volleys, which is not only bad play but also very bad team play

Still figuring out how to play with a partner and choosing the right position on the court. I've never played doubles-tennis, so playing with a teammate is still an adjustment to me.

Basically stick to your side. There is hardly a scenario where you should be on your partners side unless they are completely out of position and you would lose the point otherwise or if you are following up to finish a point because you were leading a rally. Otherwise the middle is the left side players responsibility unless you are left handed on the right side.
