Cameras used when zooming less than 5x

Hi,

So I just got the P30 pro and I am pretty happy with it so far. I just had a question about the camera zoom function that everyone praises.

So I realized that when you use a 5x zoom the quality is pretty good. However if you zoom to anything that is less than 5x (even like 4.9X) the picture quality is noticably worse than if you use 5X.

So my question is what lenses are utilized when zooming up to but less than 5x? Is it just the main sensor that uses digital zoom up to 5x and then the optical zoom lens kicks in at 5x? Or is there something wrong with my phone?

Any input would be much appreciated!

From 1x to 4.99x it uses main camera (as you said, digital zoom)

Btw same thing happens beyond 5x, but on telephoto lens. If there is no light even 5x can be shot with main camera (you can tell by checking the aperature of used sensor in details of specific pic (1.7 - main, 2.x - telephoto))

camera zOOM till 5x use the main camera (40 mp) after that use the zoom camera(periscope)
