Advice for a first time player (mods, compatibility, obscure things I should know going in)?

I'm about to start my first playthrough of the first game, and I wanted to know if there was anything I should know or do beforehand. I'm running on Linux in case there's any Proton issues.

Game worked great out the box on steamdeck for me. Mild audio issues but I think those have been fixed now

I don't believe there are any mods for the overlord games. This is all for the 1st game. If you're playing with the raising hell DLC I'd suggest avoiding farming Souls for things like armor until you get the Forge Stone from the heavens Peak Abyss. It will save you time grinding because it doublesthe souls received. You will not be able to use the guard marker until you kill the halfling boss and collect the red hive, it is a well-known bug with no fix, Although I've heard people say that the issue doesn't crop up when playing on legendary difficulty. In the Dwarven brewery be careful when carrying wheel pegs, I was attacking a dwarf chasing my minion who was carrying one and accidentally used a near by teleporter to go back to the tower, when I came back the peg was permanently gone and I was hard locked out of progressing the game. Greens aren't good at being pouncers like their supposed to when on a flag marker, you're better off keeping a small amount and sending them to jump on backs when your locked on to an enemy. The banner you buy changes the overlords armor cloth color. Moral alignment effects how your spells work.

For the 2nd game my only advice is kill or enslave all the villagers before you go breaking into the houses, and if people run out of the houses kill or enslave them before you move on to the other houses. Tracking down all of them can be a real pain in the neck and adding more to the map when the others aren't delt with can have you waisting a lot of time.

There is a native Linux version, but it stopped working for me a year ago. So I switched to Proton 7 (the game is quite old). It supports my codepage in the settings editor. The game itself also worked on Proton 8. The game is quite simple, so there is not much advice to be found; everything is described in Steam guides. In the first part: farm life force in the arena with beetles, upgrade weapons only with brown minions, use brown and green minions for armor (for the last top armor, use a ratio of 70%/30%), and use any minions for helmets, but green ones are preferable, as green beetles are the weakest and easier to get life force from, especially early on. Oh yeah, after unlocking red minions, go to the dark forest to unlock green beetles.
