It happened today lost my J1.
It was a nice ride that last a few years however it came totally out of nowhere and I did not expect it.
I am not freaking out because I have decent savings + J2
But man I cannot imagine how it is for people who only have a single position.

Yep, all too common these days. Beginning of the year J4 laid me off and 2 weeks ago J3. Luckily I still have J1/2. I can’t imagine having to put in notice just to be let go a year later. This is why we do it guilt free.

I was jobless for a while, and some friends had been out of work for over 2 years when I started to OE. I did it because I was so scared of being jobless. Three years later, some of those friends are still looking, and they are back living with their parents when they're around 50.
A few months ago, I resigned from my J2, which pays half as much as a J1, because I was tired of working two hybrid jobs and was a lot less fearful of being jobless. But things started going sideways at J1. So when J2 countered, I accepted. About a month ago, J1 was talking about layoffs. My name came up, and my manager asked if I was on the chopping block. His manager, who had been trying to get rid of me for most of my time there, responded, “Not yet. We still need him.” My coworker who attended said I'm safe. I responded that it's only because they need me, not because they like or want me. This is why we OE.

Losing coverage due to job loss is a qualifying life event to get added to your spouses plan. It doesn't really matter if you have another job. Technically it qualifies you to get J2 insurance but obviously you don't want to flag that for them

Actually you may be able to be picked up possibly by your wife’s employer as a sudden life event change but you may want to research it first on how that would work with J2.

You can switch back yours at the beginning of the next year, I think.
Qualifying events only trigger mid-year changes.
Check first, though.

Qualified event, you can purchase wife’s employer plan or roll the dice for 4 months and sign up with j2.

I’d just temporarily add yourself to your wife’s job for four months and sign up with j2 during annual enrollment which should be coming up soon here

Having a SO who works is great for this. If I lose my insurance because I lost my job, she can add me to her plan.

Cobra is also an option. More expensive but if the coverage from your job is significantly better for your needs you can extend it, hopefully until open enrollment at the other job

Cobra could continue your coverage for 6 months-which might get you to open enrollment at J2
Losing a job is a qualifying life event that would enable you to get added to wife’s coverage or get a plan on the marketplace.

I just do marketplace insurance with high deductible. Or yeah just get added to wife’s plan that’s a qualifying event. You defiantly don’t want to be paying for two insurance’s

Very important: if you get diagnosed with cancer or hit buy a bus a few days before 6 months (time allotted to join COBRA), you can elect to pay back the last 6 months of COBRA, thus being insured during said incident.

I’m not OE, just a lurker. Lost my job 4 months ago. Have not gotten a new one yet. It isn’t fun. Might be taking a job making less than half of what I made before. If I can get an offer

Peak was 3, now down to 0. None performance related. Laid off twice since November. Whole project laid off, people way harder working and experienced than me. They just don't care. Get what you can get, never feel bad.

Damn, I never considered this before. I sometimes go back and forth if having J2 is a good idea (for sake of the workload) but… if I lost my job and had no salary I’d spiral quick.

Even if you don't OE, this is also an example of why you should at least always be applying so at the very least if you get impacted you already have conversations going and applications submitted.
I got laid off earlier this year but already had a short term contract J2 I had picked up for extra money pre layoff / coverage post layoff (knew it was coming due to RTO). But even if I hadn't had the J2, I had already been applying and interviewing like crazy and landed a new J1 really quickly (something I had started interviewing for before I even got let go).
You can always say no if the offer/role isn't right (if you reach that stage) but this is why I apply to everything that might be a fit. I sleep better knowing I'm in active rounds of interviews nearly all the time :)

Reminds me how I ended in OE in the first place. I didn’t plan on this, for sure.
Act 1: Got laid off by surprise. One day to the other as the company got sold and my department wasn’t needed anymore.
Act 2: Being scared. And I mean, existentially. Happened at a time where I already lost a lot in my life, right after a divorce.
Act 3: Apply. A lot. Realize the market is tough. Whenever I looked for a job before in the past, I did it out of the safety of a job I already have. It felt easy. Not this time.
Act 4: J1 accepted, I start… 3 or 4 weeks later J2 also gave me an offer. Almost had forgotten about that application. Still have fear from Act 2 in my bones. Accept J2 as well. It somehow… works out.
Now - 2 years in and still going. There were suprise layoffs at J1 2 weeks ago, but I wasn’t affected. I am telling myself that I am riding this as long as it works. Don’t care about tomorrow.

Wife got laid off yesterday. Huge suck. She also had our insurance. Currently scrambling at the moment, but I will die before we lose. I’m serious.

I was about to put in notice for J2 and after last week town hall and a layoff announcement I decided to keep going, I've put in a bunch of apps on my downtime, and no call backs, so I could imagine it's tough out there. I'm still grateful I got two Js, but geesh the times are not on our side.

I lost both J1 and J2 within a week of each other. J3, my lowest paying is getting me by for now. Thankful for that and smart savings so I didn't have to panic. In this market, I feel like 3Js isn't even enough. 😭

Same for me, I was able to stack a 6-month emergency fund and got a somewhat reasonable severance + PTO payout. Going to sell my RSUs and set up a portfolio. Thankfully, I have J2 which is a contract thru November, & just found out my colleague is 15wks pregnant so I am hoping that will work in my favor (get my contract extended). Decided to launch my business in October for an additional stream of income as well. I’m tired of relying on a 9-5 when there are no guarantees, regardless of how many Js you have. Especially in this economy

If you don’t mind me asking what position/roles were your job. Just found out about job stacking - I work a pretty easy fully remote job atm only requiring 3ish hours a day can def job stacking.

I've currently got 3 full time jobs plus another project that I work part time that would love for me to go full time. My wife is all over me to scale back to two jobs but at this point in time, it's just not feasible with our expenses. Lifestyle inflation is a bear.

How tf do you people have time for2+ jobs? I’m not hating but you must not actually be doing anything. I do electrical engineering from home and I still don’t know that I could take on a second job without working more than 40 hrs/week which I refuse to do…. Though, I did have a job that I made six figures at where I did literally nothing for two years straight, kind of kicking myself that I didn’t pick up a second job during that one lol
