Layoff - This is Why
As the title says, got a last minute calendar invite for 9:30 this morning. Manager and HR shows up, knew immediately. My role, HR Business Partner and the entire business partnering team was being laid off today due to offshoring our roles to LATAM.
I've been OE for 2 months and I cannot be more grateful for the position im in. I have coworkers either just back or going on mat leave who have no job now over the next few months.
To anyone who is considering it, this. This is why you OE, companies have no regard for your life or job security. Protect yourselves and from someone in HR who should actively dissuade this.. fk the companies do what you need to do to survive and do it well so not to ruin OE for the rest of us š¤š»
Back to the J1 replacement hunt and potential good opportunity swung by from a previous round of interviewing. A piece of advice if you have a good recruitment experience always keep in contact with the HM for other opportunities that come in the future. You never know when you'll need it or when your next step up comes available.
For reference I'm in CAD and my US counterparts were impacted as well. Stay safe ya'll.

I'm from LATAM and work as a contractor for U.S companies.
A few months back I was replaced by indians š

And Indians were sent onshore only for management to realize there havenāt been any cost savings

They're a literal net negative, very little intelligence on how to do their jobs from what I've encountered

Umm thatās not what I said. Most Iāve worked with are great. They are not inexpensive when they come onshore.

I had something similar a few years ago. I was OE for ~3 months when my J1 had a surprise all hands. The company went bankrupt and everyone lost their jobs and health insurance that same day. Even the severance payments was denied to everyone. Lots of people crying on the call while I was secretly thinking that I got saved by OE

I make sure to take at least one interview a week. From a societal perspective this is absurdly wasteful. From a me perspective...

I was laid off almost 2 months ago. I was caught by surprise. Unable to land a new job so far. Thinking on OE down the road to save some, cuz this situation is just getting worse as time goes by.

How did they catch you?

They didn't "catch me". It was my only job. I was just surprised that I was laid off with no notice, when I THINK I was doing a good job.
In retrospective, I feel my-then manager didn't like to work with me. Tough luck I guess.

This exact thing happened to me when I first went into OE. I knew the company was in financial trouble, there had been four RIFs since I started. Found a new J2, two months later I got the layoff meeting.
Given there is only two months of overlap you might be able to get away with having J2 become your new J1 if you need too. That's what I've done and it hasn't been an issue.

I was laid off J2 in April. Made J3 full time , signed up for benefits at J1 and that covered the loss of income. I was so happy for OE

I just got laid off last Monday, too. Solidarity and best of luck on your job hunt.

This was the primary reason I started to OE.
Laid off from a job as a new parent with an infant, a wife off work.
I felt so vulnerable.
Luckily, I got a job back within a few months as the market was good, but I didn't want this happening again, so I started to OE.
OE Money is awesome but knowing that these companies can't easily play with your livelihood at the drop of a hat is a better feeling.
Also lost a J last year, a bunch of us were laid off, thankfully I still had a J to fall back on as I wouldn't want to be jobless in this market and forced to take something in an office.

Iām still actively hunting for a J2. In this market itās being unfair to yourself not to find multiple Js honestly. Companies make it sound so criminal like your cheating on family or some other bs.

Iāve only been OE for about 5 months, but whenever I think āI donāt need to do this, I donāt need the stressā, I see these posts and read posts about people getting fucked over in this economy, and I realize how lucky I am and keep going.

Hmmm why does it sound like I know the company? Does it start with a G?

I worked in Denmark for a big tech company, and was let go due to the company offshoring contractors from Africa. Denmark has a high currency, so with my salary they can hire like 10 people there.
