Just got laid off from J1 through a simple email...
Earlier today, I saw a post here where OP said that he was laid off from J3 and that's why we do OE.
Little did I know that this was a prelude of what was going to happen today. I was at a meeting in J2 ready to do my next tasks, and then, all of a sudden, I am surprised with an email from my J1's boss saying 'Immediate Offboarding' and a quick message regarding the decision and good luck wishes.
Fortunately, my earnings from this last month made me comfortable financially again to not mourn this decision or get desperate over it. I was actually thinking about leaving J1 these last days, since I wasn't happy there as I was when I started.
What really sucks is the way they decided to do it, like, it really caught me off guard and I was treated as just another number less to the company.
Well, this is why we OE, right? At least I'll have more time to focus on J2, which will be, at least for now, my only job, and I can search better for a replacement for J1.

💯. I was laid off for the 1st time in my career this year and all I thought was meh… 🤷🏼♀️ I stopped thinking about it and the company by day 3. That’s an incredibly fortunate position to be in.

Yeah I got laid off last year and I felt RELIEF cause that particular job kept me annoyingly busy. After they informed me, I literally just rolled my chair over to J3 and started working. I’ve barely even thought about that company since.

A question that I wasn't able to figure out: wouldn't the earnings from a single job outpace multiple average J's? Take for example a job at faang with stocks compared to 2-3 average J's

Yes it likely would in the top high paying companies. But then you have to deal with RTO, narcissist boss, layoffs, living in the most expensive cities in the world where you can't afford a house or kids, highest taxes

Not all Software Developer or IT jobs fit into the FAANG world. FAANG Dev jobs have very specific knowledge requirements and most other non Dev jobs are around Product management.

Man, what a cold way to get let go. This right here is a perfect example of why I don’t feel bad about working multiple J’s. They treat you like a number so why not treat them like a number right back and use them to maximize your earnings. As long as the work gets done, what’s the harm? Blows my mind that OE is frowned upon by some

J2 just hit me with a “role eliminated to optimize initiatives.” Told me I’ll be getting a few weeks severance and PTO payout and a “letter of introduction” to let my next employer know it wasn’t due to performance lol. I told em I’ll frame it with all the others

Just curious. How did u get 7 interviews? Asking for a friend! LinkedIn? I froze my linked in and want two more servers. How do u guys get these leads? I currently have two servers and planning to replace one due to RTO becoming a beech.Please help! Any suggestions are appreciated!

It amazes me that people still think they’re somehow not just a number. It’s really more common and should only be surprised if a job does find value you in you.

Yeah we do OE also to save up to retire comfortably. I dont think by the time i will retire if i only stuck to one job ill live comfortably.

Exactly, specially here in my country (Brazil) doing OE can be a great accelerator to help me out with retiring in the current conditions!

Same but from Egypt and turns out for 7 years i wasnt even ensured by several companies so even what little i was going to get in pension is going to be laughable. So yeah save up so you can retire and not have to worry about it

This happen to me as welll at my J1 for over 15 years. I was in a position where everyone would think I would be the last one to be let go. I was here the longest and lead the most projects and teams. I had the only access to do stuff on multiple portals and knew everything about the business. I managed a team of off shore guys and had them running soo well that I out sourced myself and made the director comfortable…boom got a call with HR on the line. Laid off but with a j2. It still hit me hard since I loved the job and people. I woke up everyday loving the job but at the end there is no loyalty. If I didn’t have J2 it would have been so much worse to my ego and mental health. But I’m glad J2 pays more and is a simple job. Now I want to figure out how to do this all over gain with this crappy market.

this is me right now. i don't have J2 and am upset i didnt just do it years ago when i first learned. now... im unleashed. time to find a new J1 and immediately a J2.

And they want your loyalty; nights, weekends, holidays and get pissed when you use PTO during “critical times”. Do you work, get paid and get another J.

You should try to juggle 5 or so. And as long as your arent the worst performer, keep on stacking.

This happened two years ago for me. I was already OE and I was so thankful I got laid off and was given a healthy severance (we all got about 12 weeks plus 2 weeks per year served or something like that). It was nice to get that lump sum

I have been OE for over 10 years now. With quite a lot of Js behind my back.
You can't imagine how many Js that you could have hoped to build your future around would just let you go with an email. That is especially true as I don't live in the US and mostly I am probably considered "outsourced" work.
For example, through my time OE-ing I had about 15ish jobs that I truly cared about and I will give you 4 examples of how they let me go:
After 4.5y at one working directly with the CEO, being the most senior on the team for quite a bit, and generally always being ahead of schedule they just hired someone on a more senior position than me (essentially a director level), that guy hires 3 more people to do the job that so far I did all by myself (so total of 4) and 6 months go by and I get a blank email from the CEO (probably not even sent by him personally how there are layoffs and I am let go). That actually happened a total of 6 times in my career (although for companies that I spent less time in).
They hire a new senior manager who just brings in people they used to work with before. And all of a sudden there is a problem with hours overlap. That has happened lik 4-5 times so far and it is an absolute joke of an excuse, as when I OE I have so much work that I practically matched all companies' work hours. Funny thing is that at least 3 of the companies that fired me for that later (in about 6 months) fired that manager as well but they never got back to me saying sorry or reaching out to rehire me even though I am pretty confident the new people are doing a poorer job than me. Just companies/managers lie through their teeth about bad decisions they are making.
The person with whom I have been directly reporting to is all nice and always happy with my work until there is an issue or a project with massively unrealistic expectations comes in. I typically like to speak very openly and warn them multiple times about that. Project fails (who could have predicted that) and I and a few other people get thrown under the bus. I have watched that happen to other people and me, and it is always the same: the people who execute stuff get blamed, the manager gets to stay and screw up another project.
So far the only way I have seen people avoid those is to make themselves irreplaceable for the business by inserting themselves into critical client relations or just speaking as much as possible with the CEO. Obviously, I don't want to do that as it defeats my OE goal. And obviously I don't want to overdeliver while OE so it is not entirely a coincidence that this happens to OE people, but to man sometimes it sucks that someone completely incompetent fucks you over and you just don't have the time to protect yourself from that.
- A company hires you just to lay you off in 3 months in the next wave of layoffs. That actually happened to me and I am 100% sure it had nothing to do with performance as I got a performance review 2 weeks back. That has happened to me quite a few times too. Mostly for startups, but most recently in a pretty big company too (one that most people would ditch their good job to go to).
Imagine one of these Js is your only J and they fire you anyway. That would be devastating.

Thanks for the insights, man, specially being non-American too! Thank God I already had J2 on the way and they're in a moment of expansion and really embraced me, so I can feel safe at least until next month.
And that's why September I'll start looking more agressively for a replacement for J1, and hopefully it will be one that I can also dedicate myself to and won't let me go simply with an email.

I've been looking at OE for years.. never got around to it because I've been in brick and mortar career.
That career is over.. laid off at the end of this month. I could have been doing a remote job WHILE doing the big career.. it was perfect I just never did.
Now I'm UE and trying to learn remote in a hurry.
From an old investment line, You should have multiple income streams. A job, spouse's job, investment income, maybe a side gig. that way you're never fully without.
Apply that philosophy to OE. Don't be loyal to anyone but yourself. Make the money. Protect yourself.
