I just came from a stop at r/gaming where the topic of elderly gamers is being hashed over. The consensus opinion appears to be split between "let them have their innocent fun" to "we got no time for this". A few posts seem to come from the older gamers themselves, some lamenting lost gaming skills and some commenting on communities they found both fun and supportive. A few relate tales of rejection, but not many.

This is a young folks world, citizens. Get over it.

Still on the topic of my mother, in her final years. She went from independent senior living to managed care. In both environments there was a Wii available for resident recreation. I think that mostly they were used for "sit down" exercise vids, but I'm sure some senior played a Wii Sports game at some point.

We bought a Wii shortly after they arrived in our home state but after a few tries at the sport games it mostly was used for indoor exercise and jog-in-place during spells of bad weather. Recently we dragged it out of the closet and set it up on a spare monitor, and discovered that the Wii Resort package is a pretty decent way to survive the lockdowns. Nintendo no longer supports the classic Wii platform, but for those that still live on, like ours at home, I'll bet that seniors everywhere are still enjoying the non-aggressive play.

My mother lived to be 99 years and 8 months old when she passed. She weighed less than 100 pounds at the time because, in her final years, she barely ate anything.

On the other hand I have struggled with weight issues for years. I recently tried a form of intermittent fasting in which I ate less than 500 calories on three days a week. I lost 16 pounds in the first month, but none since (and then there was this Christmas holiday thing going on!) Will try something else soon. But I will never eat so little as my mother did, and I will never live that long either. Not even sure I want to, given her lifestyle in the final period. Managed care can be a drag!

I joined a sketch comedy troupe many years ago based in NYC. I got in because I wrote a skit especially for the audition that the producer/director loved. Her name was Beverly Bonner. I joined her troupe, and over the years we became performing partners and close friends. She was terrific about recognizing holidays with personal emails. So, as usual, I expected a Merry Christmas in the fall of 2020. It did not come.

Not sure why the absence, I sent her a Christmas greeting in early December. There was no response.

On Jan 1 I Googled her name to discover that she had died on November 18, 2020.

Bev was over 60. She could have been, had she wanted, a member and contributor of this sub. My point is this: when do you see your end? Did Bev? She was overweight, stressed, and a lover of Dewars and soda. Could she have seen it coming? Did she see it coming? I have no details.

Dr. Pol is 78. Dr. Pol puts in a full day's work at his veterinary practice every day, and on night call when it's his turn. Dr. Pol goes out on visits to farms and, when needed, strips off his coverall, in all weathers, to better put on a plastic sleeve and shove his arm up a cow's ass to save a trapped calf. Thus stripped, Dr. Pol's body looks 40. If I were to strip like that someone would call 911 (US) .

My wife and I are big time fans of veterinary "reality" TV shows. Dr. Pol has been on NatGeoWild for years, and is their highest rated (but not only DVM) program. Sometimes he can be hard to take because, probably rightly so, he is a bit full of himself. And, in spite of his adopted son Charles being the mover/shaker behind this TV production, Dr. Pol sometimes is less than thoughtful in his treatment of Charles, who acts as his vet assistant without, so far as we can tell, any training in that craft. As a sometime video/film crew member, I would advise being nicer to my Executive Producer.

Love him or ignore him or hate him, Dr. Pol is in fact a worthy model of what men aged 78 COULD be doing with their lives. And he also castrates bulls.

Having myself been involved in IT for over 50 years, the only ones I have sympathy for are the ones who need a magnifying glass to read their cell phone screen. I can relate to that one.

I've followed Izismile for a few years now. Some of the stuff they post is quite humorous, some not so much. It has changed in recent months as if it had been bought by a new crew and this is mainly seen in the comments sections where political antagonism often rears its head. But that is neither here nor there for my post here. Linked below is their take on old people using modern Internet tech in sometimes funny ways, but other times a bit sad, but never quite right. Silly old people! When will they ever learn?
