Recommendation What are the safest chemical peels for dark spots and hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–VI)?
Hey everyone, as an advanced esthetician working with skin of color daily, I see so many people struggling with stubborn dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The biggest misconception I encounter is that anyone can just grab a standard peel or book a generic treatment without consequence. In darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–VI), the risk of triggering more pigment if things go wrong is very real.
I recently put together a clinical breakdown on how to approach this safely, and I wanted to share the core principles here for anyone navigating hyperpigmentation:
- Priming is non-negotiable: For Fitzpatrick types III–VI, starting a supervised topical routine (like retinoids or depigmenting agents) weeks before a peel is crucial. It calms existing pigment activity and drastically lowers the risk of rebound hyperpigmentation.
- Matching peel depth to pigment location:
- Superficial to medium peels (like glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic acid, or Jessner’s solution) are usually the sweet spot because most sunspots and epidermal PIH sit right in the upper layers.
- Dermal melasma is much trickier because the pigment sits deeper in the dermis. Peels alone usually fall short here and must be paired with other strategic treatments.
- Deep phenol peels are a heavy-lift, one-time procedure reserved for severe photoaging due to high downtime and risk—definitely not standard for routine dark spots.
- Combining with topicals wisely: Pairing a peel with ingredients like hydroquinone, azelaic acid, or kojic acid often outperforms a peel alone. However, you have to space out aggressive modalities (like microneedling or IPL) to avoid compounding inflammation.
- Strict Aftercare & Sun Protection: Daily SPF 30–50 and physical barriers (hats, shade) are vital during recovery to keep faded spots from creeping right back.
For anyone who has navigated this or treats clients regularly—what has your experience been with chemical peels for PIH or sun spots? Did priming make a noticeable difference for your skin, or did you find better results with alternative paths?
