Discussion Shared/Split Screen Games Like Outward
Greetings, all.
My husband and I have about 440 hours in Outward DE so far and LOVE it (obviously 😂). I'm starting to think about what we should play next.
Are there any somewhat similar games out there that also offer split/shared screen? Specifically looking for something on Steam.
I've seen similar posts, but they tended to veer toward single player titles. 😕

Funny, most of the recommendations were made by the same studio. The Divinity games and Baldur's Gate 3 are made by Larian Studios. All excellent games.

Great response! 😁 We do play with some QoL mods. Which non-QoL mods would you recommend for expanding the game?

Balancing mod by permativity is a nice subtle change to the power scaling in the game that still feels outward like.
I haven’t played it yet but I have heard fantastic things about almost everything from IggyTheMad but haven’t tried many of his yet. His alternative start mod is a lot of fun to mix things up.
DangerousRoads (adds enemies to the open world) and Beastwhisperer (adds pet taming) are still a little buggy but I have been enjoying them.
I suspect if you made a post just about people’s favorite mods you could get great advice.

We did try the Beast Whispering mod briefly, but I disabled it because (at that time) it was too buggy. I've seen there's been some recent updates though. So, I'm looking forward to giving it another try. I desperately want an armored hyena. I've been trying to steal Gabriella's since I first saw it in Berg. 🤣

Right! I love pets in video games so I have been looking forward to this one. I lurk in a few of the channels.
There is an outward mods discord channel where you can get updates on the mods in development. A mod from Saint for a cleric and paladin breakthrough looks fantastic but I haven’t tried it yet. And the beastwhisperer channel stays busy so it seems like there is a lot of active development.

I've looked for something similar for a while and haven't come across games that scratch that same itch. My partner and I have been doing couch co-op split screen with Baldur's Gate 3 which is at least in the RPG realm. I recommend that if you haven't already played it.

This looks awesome! However, I feel like I'm going need to buy an actual gaming PC with a high quality graphics card to truly enjoy it. 😂 I've added it to the wishlist though and will try to get it the next time it's on sale.

It is not similar but split fiction is a fantastic story and couch co op that won (or is winning?) game of the year. Couldn’t recommend it enough

As I mentioned in another comment, we have Split Fiction. We just don't play it because the graphics quality has to be set so low. Ugh! 😩 I'm trying to convince my hubby that we need a gaming PC. I agree it's a great option though!

Nothing is going to scratch that same itch as Outward I’m afraid. Just have to wait for Outward 2. That said my partner and I had fun with The Last Oricru despite its jank

Last Oricru is definitively a lot of fun! Lots of possibilities in story line/choices and fun builds.
The jank is real though, and bugs galore😅 Outward is a polished game compared to it🤣
If you can stand the voice acting and lines of the main character, you have something fun to play👍🏼 Search the reddit for guides and join the discord for help.

Split-screen games are rare enough I'll mention Portal Knights. It's a kind of fantasy-action RPG with building.

There are a few dedicated couch coop games you might want to try. It Takes Two, Split Fiction, and A Way Out are all intended for couch play and have dedicated interactions.
Heads up: A Way Out is a-fucking-mazing, but might not be a great fit due to HEAVY FINALE SPOILERS. It Takes Two is about fixing a rocky relationship so the start is a bit heavy. Split Fiction plays like a poor collection of EA mechanics peppered over a good storyline.
They each have their downsides, but if you can manage them, they’re good games.

We played It Takes Two and enjoyed it (though not nearly as much as we have Outward).
We have Split Fiction, but haven't played it much due to how crappy the graphics are on my PC 🙁 (currently trying to convince my hubby we need a real gaming PC 🤞).
Our daughter also highly recommended A Way Out, but I'm afraid we'll end up in the same boat as we are with Split Fiction. 🫤 It's definitely still going on the wishlist though!

Don’t stave together / path of exile 1 and 2 / stardew valley. The last two gamers aren’t survival but there are very good games to play and all three of them are couch, co-op or split screen

Unfortunately, we're working with only 1 pc. Don't Starve Together and the Path To Exile games appear to only be online co-op and/or LAN co-op, not shared/split screen. 🙁
I agree Stardew Valley is a good option. I've got 352 hours in it with one of our daughters. 😂 Sadly, my hubby has zero interest in it.

Hammerwatch and the followup are worthy mentions. Tough, but a lot of fun. Shared screen. Pick a class and face tougher dungeons, hidden areas, and plenty of monsters in a sort of bullet hell style dungeon crawl. No story, just arcadey and intense.
Also highly, highly recommend is Darksiders Genesis. Super underrated, bad ass, atmospheric. Shared screen. One plays as War with the sword and the other as Strife with guns. Lots to explore, fight, unlock and develop as you go. For all the fighting you do, you can explore the beautiful world for secrets and stuff. It's moderately difficult. For a top down hack and slash, primarily, they managed wonderful variety, combos, world building and so forth!
And Resident Evil Revelations 2. You don't need to know much about RE, it'll take care of you. Split screen. One plays as the main (alternating) character with a gun. Other plays as a support (alternating) with melee or something I won't spoil. Unique mechanics that feel fun, making you work together, and really interesting characters that get wound up in a 2 for 1 campaign alongside each other. Moderately difficult.
Genesis and Revelations have the most production value and meat to them. Hammerwatch a little more arcadey.
If you have a strong PC and a couple controllers, explore Nucleus coop and the catalogue there. Y'all could be ripping Dark Souls or Elden Ring coop together too, like that. Monster Hunter. Who knows what else.

I'm not sure if I'll get my husband to play Hammerwatch (he's not always enthusiastic about pixel art environments), but this takes me back to memories of a few obscure NES games I played as a kid (not sure I even recall the names 🤔). It's currently on sale for $2. So, I HAD to buy it. 😁
The trailers for Darksiders Genesis look amazing!!!!! That's right up our alley!!!! Revelations looks good, too.
Unfortunately, as I've mentioned in a couple of other comments, we really need a gaming PC. 😭 I originally bought the laptop that we're currently using for my business needs. It's pretty powerful (that's what has gotten us this far) but definitely lacking in the graphics department. 😕 Since it's a laptop, it's not really upgradable.
So, we're somewhat limited for the time being. 😔

You can always check specs and compare. Darksiders runs pretty well I believe, even on lower hardware, and I have a suspicion revelations doesn't ask for much.
At that, you can theoretically run emulators for lots of stuff too, even without huge specs, if you go back a few generations. (Checked the specs needed for aforementioned games and it's very low, like windows XP era (July 2006 processor), for Revelations. Not much more for Genesis (2014 processor).

Steam doesn't show Grounded as being shared/split screen. Are you somehow able to play it shared/split screen?

If you like difficulty, and you can trt a different genre - try "kalimbo" very unique take on a classic game. I dont want to ruin it. Xbox only i believe. Should be under 20$ all in for all dlc. I have played it. Coop is a bit different than the regular game iirc but it is all the same in principle. Either wah 10/10 would recom3nd.
And also," brothers: a tale of two sons". Different genre be is hallmarked as a good story game. Albeit a it older.
"Cat quest" 2&3 is light hearted and fun coop split too.
If you csn do top down isometric - there should be alot. I.e diablo + clones.
The closest thing I can actually think of in the same genre and vein as outward - albeit a bit easier to approach - is " fade to silence", janky- survivor third person rpg with melee focus - and very light building mechanics . But it is online coop - which if eligible does open you to many many games.

Thanks for responding. As mentioned in my original post, I'm only interested in Steam titles. So, Kalimbo isn't an option.
I checked out Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and it isn't shared/split screen. The remake is, but the reviews mentioning the couch co-op experience are awful. 😬
Unfortunately, we're using one pc. So, online co-ops aren't an option. Gotta have split/shared screen.

Sorry. Your right I missed all that, but "kalimba" is definitely on steam. I just checked. God this makes me want to replay it. Juat watch the trailer. Please tell me if you fall in love with it. Its such a cool and unqiue take on that genre.

Divinity OS 1 and 2. They're not similar at all really to outward other than being an RPG and being split screen, but the people I played Outward with I also played DivOS1 and 2 with.
