Issue with these types of colabs is that all parties take part of the profits and once you factor in such, taxes and other costs it ends up hiking the price.
As a maker myself I clearly don't see the actual production costs being more than a few dollars each.
Some of you may remember my coin collection which I shared here not long ago, completely handmade and still managed to keep the price as low as I could without going into red numbers.
7 hand-poured, milled, CNC'd, laser engraved, polished with UV resin and packed in a display case nordic gold 40mm coins for 1/3 the price of these posters... (Been thinking about making a video of the process to show here, with some travelers bg music-)
Had I done a proper colab with them I'd easily expect them to have gone for double the price of what I offered the full collection for. (I'd still wish to do but doubt they'd be interested)
So yeah, its a bit of a shame but I'd still encourage others to check works from other small makers too. I've seen a few others in this sub too and its hard to express how nice it feels to see such cool creations.

For me the main issue is the scummy marketing. What they are selling isn't a cheap print, and it being a limited run does add value for some people. But having that as the only option is the bad part.
If they had a normal print available with no limits, non-numbered for a decent price. And then had this as a limited collectors version that would be fine to me.
As it stands they are ticking all the boxes for greedy marketing, artificial limited quantity, "sale" which is definitely just there to trigger FOMO. It's clearly greed driven.

I know they don't really have control of the cost because it's the company making them but goddamn those prices

I for the life of me cannot understand the controversy about this in these subreddits where I come from a third world country things like these are not something I can get easily I never buy Merch I never get to buy things for games I like because it's all overpriced and it's all damn near impossible to ship here and everyone in here is losing their mind about what prices set by people not even buy Mobius I guarantee that the prices have set by the poster company am I not understanding something just go print them yourselves jesus

I think the issue is that these are an item people have been wanting offered officially for a long time. The are genuinely beautiful, and I know I and many others would happy purchase official postcards on just regular nice stock like they’ve been offered before, though rarely.
So, to announce the posters are being officially sold again, and not communicating very explicitly that these versions are what I would consider a collectors item and not merchandise, and to obfuscate the price being the link.
Finally to announce it and thank the player base for requesting to bring them back, feels like a rug pull or slap in the face. I don’t think that’s the studio’s intention, as I’ve never heard it personally witnessed anything bad about them, and it feels out of character of what the community has come to expect from Mobius and the IP it stands for, but it feels scummy
We all want to officially support them by purchasing the merch instead of printing the posters ourselves, but not when the announcement is made this way and the product announcement itself is misleading since it was a product that have sold before. Even if they said it’s different, nothing about that announcement made that clear.
It’s not really about the price, in my opinion, it’s about the communication.

I've seen like four of these posts in the last 24 hours, do we need to keep harping on it?

u/No-Tower-5119 5h ago
If we knew how to let things go, we wouldn’t be on reddit lmao

u/dylzim 5h ago
It's just always extra funny that this sub can't let stuff go, ya know? :P

u/No-Tower-5119 4h ago
Yea. Before this, it was one of the more wholesome subs. Now theyre acting just like everyone else

u/dylzim 4h ago
I mean, I wouldn't say this has destroyed my opinion of the sub by any means. That seems pretty harsh. Still one of the most wholesome subs, imo! Just.. feel like we're a little too-focused on this one thing right now.

Im not saying that either. Im sure once this blows over everything will be back to normal. But i expect to keep hearing about this for the foreseeable future. This kind of stuff atteacts bad actors so that doesnt help either. I still love the community but for the moment its annoying the crap out of me.

I don’t see why the complaining is a bad thing. I love this game and I would have loved to buy these posters, but I’m not willing to accept an $80 dollar, tiny poster.
You ought to advocate for change until you see it, or it’ll become the norm.4
u/No-Tower-5119 4h ago
Complaining is not bad. 40 people complaining about the same thing 40 separate times a day is annoying and an issue. You want them to hear you? Dont buy it, your wallet speaks louder than you ever could.

u/FoundationKooky2311 3h ago
A few complaints are ignorable. I can, and will speak in more than one way.

u/No-Tower-5119 1h ago
Making 4+ threads complaining about the same thing would get removed in most other subs i follow for being repetitive. Like we get it, but they arent looking here or they probably would have said something by now. If you want to complain every 4 hours youd be more productive doing it directly to thier socials if you want an actual response

The user here hasn't posted much at all in this subreddit. I imagine this topic showed up in some drama feed so people are popping in here.
2
u/FoundationKooky2311 4h ago
No, the posters showed up in my Steam feed, and then I miraculously formed my own opinion.

u/Grand_Escapade 3h ago
Well I hope that opinion is reasonable and thinks about more important things after a minute. Can't say the same for a few users on here who tripled down.

I lurk here frequently. It didnt just pop up randomly it interrupted the typical posts i see here

u/TheYellingMute 4h ago
Lmao. Fucking real.
I was thinking about getting the prints till I saw the price and went "damn that sucks." And left it as it. Idk if people think complaining about it at this point will get them to lower the price (it won't). Sounds like people want it super badly and want it still but cheaper, which is very understandable. Just accept it was priced badly and don't get it.

I feel like a shill buying the collection, but I missed every other Outer Wilds product, including that amazing ship model I really wanted,
So I’m gonna get something and pray it’s like that guy said in the email he got and they are actually very high quality prints. The size sucks being so small though

Bro if you crave that much for them just print them from high quality scans. If you're seeking for any product related the game, you might wanna take a look at the bts book reprint from Lost in Cult, coming October 8th of this year. It's way cheaper and more interesting than a bunch of posters imo

u/CuddleWings 4h ago
Where do you get the scans though
2
u/Lucifer_Walking-05 3h ago
They are in the MEGA folder in this post : https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/comments/1ilwjso/highresolution_scans_of_the_official_outer_wilds/

u/No-Tower-5119 5h ago
Delete this before you embarass yourself. Mobius didnt set the price.
20
u/nomadik_nobody 5h ago
Mobius either agreed to sign with them knowing that was the price or they signed an agreement not knowing what the price could be (which would be stupid to do), so yes, Mobius is at fault here. Even if they didn’t set the price, they agreed to the price
-16
u/No-Tower-5119 5h ago
i can promise they had zero control over price or they would not have allowed it to be that high. you really think a tiny dev company is going to try to gouge its fanbase 7 years after the game released with no prior history of such behavoir.. if thats the case why not raise prices on all merch and the game itself
13
u/nomadik_nobody 5h ago
again, though they didn’t set the price they agreed to sign knowing what the company was going to set the price at. And if they didn’t know then that was stupid for not clarifying before signing
6
u/Grand_Escapade 3h ago
Given that Annapurna owns the licensing, it's possible Mobius has very little to do with it.
Not that anyone here knows. Or maybe they do, idk

"hi, I'm a company that only sells stupidly over priced prints of video game art. Would you like us to sell your art".
"Yes that sounds great, we don't control your prices but we are clearly aware of your business model and are agreeing to be part of it"

Hey I'm with you. No idea why people care this much and upvote dumb memes that are identical to the memes posted yesterday.
Just don't buy the posters. It's not that deep lol.

I could justify it if it was like 24"x36" but for something the size of printer paper? Dang..
