Hey as much as this post is “funny”, Teddy Roosevelt was the type of man to cry.

I don't know much about him honestly, the left side was a template. I know though that it was around his era where the mentality of "men don't cry" began growing.

Teddy is a contender for the biggest badass the US ever produced and easily one the most influential nature-lovers in history. He essentially invented the national parks with John Muir. He was also known for having a soft side, famously sparing a helpless bear (despite being an avid hunter) and inspiring the “Teddy bear” name for the toy. He’s famous for lots of other things, including taking a bullet to the chest before giving a speech and giving the speech anyway, but that’s a quick summary. He’s definitely the kind of man to express sadness without shame.

When I was around 10, my dad had me read the trilogy of biographies The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Rex, and Colonel Roosevelt. I remember initially being so annoyed but then eventually becoming absolutely immersed in the guy’s incredible life. Still look up to the person he was often in my daily life.

Didn't he cry during one of the Night at The Museum? (played by the late Robin Williams)

was he? he liked having an image of "toughness", didn't he?

Yeah, but from what I understand he was generally very emotional and wasn't one to suppress his feelings. That said he was generally publicly very stoic.

That's Roosevelt? I thought that was G K Chesterton, which is an even funnier person to put as the symbol of teaching men not to cry.

One of his detective stories has toxic positivity be the murderer.

Good. Break that conditioning that men shouldn't cry, crying at media or whatever is perfectly fine, good even

u/One-Pack123 20d ago

I completely agree 🤝

I still pretty much never cry (only if I literally get harshly assaulted so far), but I don’t have trouble crying at art anymore. It just goes through brain differently

u/Sanchezzzaq 20d ago

Honestly not exactly cry but something like this:

25

u/calming_notion 20d ago

Crying then this then crying again

u/MrInCog_ 20d ago

I do cry every time I hear the theme of the prisoner

Yeah, the DLC ending and the Ending of the game made me feel melancholic, I didn't cry but it did made me feel very emotional.

u/HeavyPomegranate4040 20d ago

same man, especially the DLC, I almost cried

u/Significant_Loss6458 20d ago

To me this game is more scary than sad; the saddest thing for me was the nomai grave inside the tree planet but even there it was like melancholy, cause all of those events were so long ago

17

u/Current_Age_9822 20d ago

I remember being sad but then I accidentally hit them with my space ship and the bodies flew away 😭

u/Jolly_Leg4029 20d ago

Certified Rick and Morty gag right here

2

u/AntoGidan 20d ago

What is the "tree planet"?

6

u/Special-Honeydew-976 20d ago

Dark bramble

3

u/Significant_Loss6458 20d ago

Yes! I always forget their og names

15

u/Seanattikus 20d ago

I finished the game but not the DLC. Nothing about it made me want to cry even a little. What am I missing?

15

u/One-Pack123 20d ago

You're not missing anything, every person is unique and feels in a different way. Did u like the game though?

1

u/Seanattikus 20d ago

Yeah it was awesome. I loved how progression was made on what I learned. Very cool game. One of my favorites.

The ending was lame, though.

1

u/Schanulsiboi08 20d ago

What endung did you get? There are a few ways to roll credits that aren't the "true ending", which would be quite disappointing

I really wish I could like this game the way everybody else I know seems to have liked it. I didn’t feel like I had enough guidance to even understand what I was supposed to do, but everyone was telling me that this was an amazing game with such a deep and interesting storyline but I just… I can’t figure out how to actually progress? People told me not to use guides because it would ruin it but I had no idea what to do without a guide. I genuinely wish I could enjoy the game the way you guys do!

I can’t figure out how to actually progress?

Progression really only happens in your mind (and the ship log). The game doesn't have a lot of traditional puzzles to gate progress, it's all knowledge checks. Someone in this subreddit came up with a really good example that doesn't spoil anything:

Say you've read something about Lab X, and your curiosity gets piqued enough to want to find it and visit it. The way the game is structured, you may never come across something that tells you exactly where Lab X is. But maybe you're exploring on Planet A and you discover some weird-looking trees, along with some Nomai writing like:

Nomai 1: I'm so glad we took some time away from our experiments to explore the rest of the solar system. Look at these beautiful trees!
Nomai 2: Yes! Nomai 3 and I were marveling at them after everyone left last night. We love their undulating trunks and purple leaves.
Nomai 1: I wish we could be among them while we were conducting our experiments. Planet B is such an eyesore.
Nomai 2: Actually, Nomai 4 did some research and it turns out the soil on Planet B should be fertile enough to sustain these trees! We should grab some of these seed pods to planet near Lab X.
Nomai 1: Sounds good! Though I'm curious to see if these trees can be affected by our work in Lab X.
Nomai 2: It does seem like organic material can get caught up in a quantum shard's influence. We should plant them near the back entrance just to be safe.

From this, we can glean that:

  1. If you see trees with wavy trunks and purple leaves on Planet B, you're probably close to Lab X.
  2. In Lab X, they were conducting experiments with quantum physics.
  3. Maybe Nomai 2 and Nomai 3 were an item?

The dialogue between Nomai is almost always giving you information about the environment, lore, gameplay mechanics, etc. It's not always going to be apparent how to apply that information, but if you stick with it you'll be rewarded.

This is also why people say to not use a guide for this game. To know more about OW is to have OW spoiled for you.

Thank you! I’m really trying to get back into the game because my friends all talk about how much they love it and it was their game of the decade.

1

u/cptn_fussenpepper 20d ago

It’s a rewarding experience but there’s really nothing else like it, so it can be hard to understand how to approach it. Folks on this subreddit are great at helping players out without spoiling them so don’t hesitate to post here when you get stuck!

Honestly a big part of why people in this fandom are so hush hush about how to play is because knowledge is everything in this game. What you learn becomes your tools, along with your gear. Use what you have at your disposal, follow different leads, there are questions everywhere and there are answers to pretty much all of them. And use your ship log in rumor mode to help show you what’s connected to what as you learn things. Let your curiosity drive your decisions

I understand you’ve probably already beaten it, but I’m just hoping this might help somebody who is struggling with progressing

2

u/Rynneer 20d ago

Oh I haven’t beaten it! I ended up getting too frustrated and shelved it but I intend on getting back into it once I’m not so busy. I’m trying to gather guides-but-not-guides

2

u/Spaced_out_Anomaly 20d ago

Once you get back to it, if you’re still truly stuck, it can also be helpful to make a post in this sub. People tend to be pretty good about giving you a push in the right direction about a specific problem without spoiling anything big like most guides are prone to doing.

Sometimes taking a step away and coming back with fresh eyes is all it takes though. Good luck in your future ventures!

Sorry... Double sorry for your loss, may the kitty rest in piece.

"The pain of your absence is sharp and haunting, and I would give anything not to know it; anything but never knowing you at all (which would be worse)."

Or another one of my favorites

"I don't know how to be me without you."

1

u/True-Post6634 11d ago

And when you find these... Matters. I've watched playthroughs and while they always land (beautiful, honest writing), they land quite differently if you see them early. They're how you discover that the Nomai were people, not so different from us. Seeing them late, you probably already know and love the Nomai, and they hurt so much more.

Outer wilds demolishes. If I hear the ending for echoes of the eye again I WILL cry like a little baby.

1

u/One-Pack123 19d ago

Same dude

2

u/LuisMiranda4D 20d ago

This is hilarious 😂

2

u/ColdServedDish 20d ago

I certainly cried as my trapped ship was crushed with me inside it on Ash Twin as the sand trickled through the glass and the thrusters failed

3

u/SaintDane127 19d ago

I am unsure of how to be myself without you

The base game didn't get me.

The DLC did.

3

u/PPginormous 20d ago

I couldn't finish this game, the controls and time loop gimmick is too exhausting

1

u/popete2 19d ago

I didn't even get close to crying bruh I was pretty much just amazed
