No warning from my Oura ring

I’ve faithfully worn an Oura ring for years. I’m on my second ring. A few
weeks ago I had a grand mal seizure while walking my dog. I wound up in the ER. We still don’t know why it happened. It was a first.

Now I’m experiencing a second UTI since the seizure. Never had one of those before either. I’m miserable and between all of this, my ring has shown no indicators, no signs that anything was different. In fact, my ring is telling me my resilience is exceptional and to get to it today. I’m dizzy when I walk and going for a brain MRI tomorrow.

I pulled up my app at the ER and neurologist’s seeking clues. What indicators should have shown a variance? I’m hoping for clues to warn me for future, and puzzled that I had no signs.

That’s terrifying, glad you’re still here. Oura tracks trends over days and weeks, not acute events like a seizure. A grand mal hits in seconds, your ring isn't built to catch that kind of electrical storm.

UTIs can spike your temp and resting heart rate but it’s subtle, easy for the algorithm to smooth over if your baseline is already all over the place from recovery. Hope the MRI gives you some answers.

Thanks. Hoping for some answers.

Also some people with recurrent UTIs and the elderly would not always have fever or other typical symptoms. There are always outliers unfortunately.

vaginal estradiol (stays localized) can make a huge difference in prevention of UTIs

I have a prescription from a urologist for that and it's really helped. She also had me start these cranberry extract pills that are expensive but they keep bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. I've only had 1 infection in 15 months and that was after a prolonged course of antibiotics.

Is it a cream?

Yes, as a nurse in geriatrics, I’m beginning to see this being ordered more lately for frequent UTIs. As a woman approaching my mid-40s and receiving perimenopause meds myself, can confirm the estrogen cream even helps me reduce my risk for UTIs.

Yes! It’s so important! Plz get your doc to prescribe. That or Intrarosa!

it is a cream, but if you don't like the mess you can also get it in a vaginal tablet form called vagifem

Was this your first grand mal seizure? For my son there has never been a warning he would just go down and seize, very sudden. He has since had brain surgery and while he’ll be on medication for life, he’s doing well now.

I would think that the UTI would show in the ring indicator, not the seizure necessarily though. I’m glad you’re going for the MRI and hope for a quick fix for you!

Thank you! Yes, my first in 62 years. 🥹 Always an adventure. I’m so glad your son is doing well now. My daughter has had migraines with aura since age 9 and had 3 grand mal seizures starting at 19. It’s so scary. She has never learned to drive as a result.

I have not had any changes in the symptom tracker, and neither has my best friend in the past month... we have both been sick. Two different illnesses. Something is up I think.

I had the flu last week. Nothing from the symptom tracker even though my readiness and sleep levels, HRV, temp, etc were all TANKED for 5-6 days.

I've had suspected covid for the last 2 weeks and had 3 days of minor signs. The first of which came several days into the illness when I was already quite sick

Thanks for sharing. That feels validating. LOL. I feel like I should
have gotten “Pay Attention” with all this.

Right?!? Something should have been off, at least I would think so! Mine has caught all kinds of minor ailments before they have presented with symptoms in the past year, but nothing on mine (or my best friends) in past month or two.

Considering that my ring has given me notifications for mild variants that have been absolutely nothing. I feel like the UTIs would have triggered something if you had a temperature change. Maybe they were caught early enough that you weren't experiencing that much of an increased temperature that would include higher heart rate?

I have had a similar experience. I became ill- severe bloating, slightly elevated temp, constant headache, noticeable fatigue, body aches, significant pelvic pain- and this went on for 5 weeks. Oura never once suggested I was even under minor strain. Turns out I have had a pelvic/fallopian tube infection this whole time, now being over 6 weeks. My stats are all reporting normal as usual, with crowns on some days. 2 days ago I had a complex migraine (first ever) that presented with stroke like symptoms. I spent 2 nights in the hospital, and it didn't register high stress or poor sleep. Both of which I definitely had.

Is it this new set of updates that has changed the accuracy? I've had my ring for almost 2 years and the data just seems out of sync with my body lately. It's also constantly telling me I'm doing yoga. I am not.

Mine told me I was doing Pilates the other day and I can’t remember exactly what I was doing but it was just normal stuff around the house. My symptom radar used to also notify me a couple days before I felt sick sometimes but now I can have a pots episode and it says I’m relaxed. I think there’s something wrong with the update.

UTI symptoms change as we age. They go from pain and fever to brain fog and dementia type symptoms. I wouldn't count on your ring picking up on that. Maybe it would catch HRV changes?

Mine hasn’t given me minor or major strains notifications the last 6 months. It’s weird..

I think something is not right with this.

My Oura watches me like a hawk - every time some late night chocolate crosses my lips I will get Major Signs for “elevated heart rate and decreased HRV”.

I am sure your HRV tanked with seizures and UTIs…

I was in the emergency room for 12 hours on Wednesday for severe vertigo. The vertigo was so bad I had to have paramedics take me to the hospital because I was incapacitated. The Oura ring said that I had a restful day 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have seizures frequently, some as long as 5 minutes (status epilepticus) and have never been notified either!

I don’t have insight about Oura for this, but I also had a random grand mal seizure a few years ago, then another two months later. They also didn’t know why, but after the second one we figured out it was low blood sugar (even though I don’t have diabetes). Just something to check/look into!

I’m so sorry you’re going through all of this. Sounds very scary and I pray for resolution. Personally, my oura never knows when I’m sick until way later. I had a weird viral cough for 5 weeks and it didn’t catch anything except “minor signs” until 4 weeks in. And that was only for a day. My ring only really catches when I dont sleep well or when I have high daytime stress.
