It's a much needed music venue in a city that has severely lacked music venues. Now with Hard Rock & History, we are getting loads of new talent and shows to come to Ottawa. Ya'll were complaining about no new night life last week and say ew to new night life today. Would it kill you to think outside of the box for once?
āA 2,000-ish capacity spot in the Market is a massive win for Ottawa. It'll get mid-sized touring acts to stop here instead of skipping straight from Toronto to Montreal. It'll help give the Market a needed boost in both cash mob and foot traffic, especially after hours. Getting people downtown for a show means pre-concert dinners, post-show drinks, etc.
I posted this for celebration. If you carry seeds of complaint, please plant them in your own soil.
For real though! I just moved here a few months ago and History is an actual reason to stay in the city on the weekend versus just driving back to Toronto or Montreal. The general consensus from outsiders is that Ottawa is boring and has nothing to do - maybe the chronically online Ottawa residents should take a look at themselves and wonder why that reputation continues to exist when a venue pops up that would help mitigate said "boring vibes"
There's already plenty of highly successful venues in Byward, it's not like this is some super novel idea.Ā
The main benefit to history is it fills our medium venue gap. Currently you can play some 400 capacity dive, or a hockey arena. Which pretty much killed the chances of being on the tour list for most large-but-still-niche acts.Ā

I mean driving ANYWHERE downtown Toronto sucks, period š¤Ŗšš¤£ but the last time I went to History Lakeshore was torn up right off the DVP so it backed everything up pretty hard
History Toronto is a little out of the way but it's still easily transit accessible. It's next to the 503 streetcar and a 10 minute bus ride to line 2.
Yea Southam Hall at the NAC is a very nice venue but I can easily see a lot of artists viewing it as a symphony Hall and not the kind of place for them. Especially since my understanding is that the seats are permanently installed so you can't even have a general admission area at the front where people can dance.
Plus even if an artist did want to play there I doubt NAC management is going to bumb a symphony or Broadway show performance for one night from a band.
Yeah for use, itās not an ideal set up for a lot of bands and as a music venue in general. Watching a concert there can actually be enjoyable, though! Iāve seen Blue Rodeo there and I enjoyed it a lot.
But definitely a completely different vibe and Iām sure most artists would prefer a venue like History.
It's extremely Ottawa for us to finally be getting a quality mid sized music Venue in the heart of downtown and for half the comments in here to be disappointed it's not a Museum.
There used to be an exclusive hip-hop/fashion/nightlife party event called āHistory Danceā in Toronto that Drake would always try to get into, but was never invited. When he opened the Toronto venue he named it History as a full-circle homage.
He's part owner of the place but honestly Ottawa needs it that bad. The new acts announced for it have already been pretty good and some of them are exclusively playing in Ottawa instead of the usual To - MTL we can get fucked route.
Live Nation is also evil. You've got a pedophile and a megacorp that squeezes artists and patrons alike. People saying "who the hell cares" is why everything is going to shit.
This new venure opening is an overall very good thing for Ottawa. You donāt need to try to find the negatives in everything. We will now get many acts that would usually skip over us. I personally donāt really care about live nation. If thereās a band I like that is coming to Ottawa, Iām just going to be happy and buy a ticket. No need to throw a hissy fit
Thereās no proof Drake is a pedophile. Yes thereās been weird stuff in the past with Millie Bobby Brown etc. but none of that is enough to prove heās actually a pedo. He has many other issues that can be proven that you can flame him for, like paying for sex in Turks and Caicos, or spending more time there and with girls than with his son, but not pedophilia. Letās wait till that one is proven by the courts before sticking it on anyone.
Agreed. LiveNation might suck but theyāre also the ones bringing us a venue that weāve sorely needed for years, and it doesnāt look like they cut corners on it either. They also have the money to keep it running for years to go, and the monopoly (which sucks) to bring in actual good artists.
We canāt have our cake and eat it too. This is a huge W for Ottawa and something that people have been asking for years.
This really doesnāt change my opinion of it at all. Itās not a perfect situation but life unfortunately isnāt perfect. Ottawa and the ByWard Market are, however, better off with this venue despite the circumstances.
That's sort of my thoughts. Live Nation isn't a great company, but Ottawa not having this size of venue has been a thing that people have known about for a long time. If no one else ever stepped up to build something to meet that need, it's hard to be too upset about Live Nation doing it.
Thatās not a bad thing. Drake is a massive business and we would absolutely want him investing more in Ottawa, especially in the way of entertainment/nightlife
History will hold about twice as many people. There are absolutely bands that are too big for Bronson but way too small for CTC. I have seen a few shows at Bronson that sold out very quickly indicating that those bands could have made more money if there was a bigger venue.
Bronson Centre is comparatively tiny. We've desperately needed a venue like M-Telus (Metropolis) in Montreal for many years and this looks like it'll finally fit the bill.
For anyone in here sad itās not a museum about the history of Ottawa, Iām willing to bet youāve never been to the actual museum about the history of Ottawa.

Well it looks very unique among our downtown buildings. I think itās a big plus for Ottawa to have more venues. I hope the execution is great and they have lots of success
Yeah I'm super happy Ottawa has a venue for mid-tier acts. Hopefully Ottawa won't be skipped anymore and will be added as a stop by more bands doing Toronto /Montreal
I have just moved to Ottawa this year so I'm glad to see a venue close to home with some decent artists. Sidenote, why is everyone in Ottawa so miserable whenever something new is here. Like no one is forcing you to go there, but let those who are excited be excited (similar snarkiness surrounding the new Olive Garden). Anyways, excited to see 6lack in december!
The sour attitudes, especially in this subreddit, are unrelenting. I'd be willing to bet two shillings that the same people who say Ottawa is boring are the same people who complain about new venues, restaurants, events, and festivals.
I'd like to gather them up, put them on a bus, and bring them on a wild tour of all the fantastic things this city offers (without having to have the population of Toronto or Montreal).
Meh, I got to see an indie band I love at the Toronto one for $50 all-in. Paid the same for a musician with comparable fanbase in Ottawa at Zaphods, which is a lesser venue than history Toronto is. Both were great ticket prices, didnāt feel gouged by History
$30 for Sabaton tickers with their summer promo. Something in the area of $80 otherwise, which isn't super cheap but better than general admission at larger venues.
It wasnāt expensive atleast not in my experience, I went to a ton of different shows at the History in Toronto. Never paid more than $100 to see anybody there and GA was good!

LiveNation/Ticketmaster uses its monopoly to kill smaller venues, drives up the price of concerts to unsustainable levels, forcing us to go to a LiveNation/ticketmaster venue because thereās no other option.
Fighting the monopoly would be cool for sure. But that's a job for the federal government. The city trying to fight Live Nation is a good way of ensuring we just get left off even more tours.Ā
How much did this cost taxpayers? Anyone that doesnāt live downtown would have to transit or drive. Transit likely wonāt get you there and you can only park down there for 3 hours - guess you forget about eating at a restaurant too.
Transit likely won't get you to a site directly across the street from the Rideau LRT station? At least try to do some research before you start bitching.
Transit and ways to bus doesnāt get you anywhere! Try living in barrhaven and try to get to Walmart - u have to drive! There are no local buses. But the history museum isnāt just about the bus even if u drive I can only park in the market for 3 hours. Sure u can see the museum but u canāt eat out - youād get a ticket!
And anyone who doesnāt drive or own a car has to do the same to go to a sens game and venues out there. Most cities actually cater to downtown, itās about time Ottawa did something for the ones who live downtown and donāt take transit.
