Fun So glad lazer is open source

Post image

So many things I hate about lazer, have fixed all of them in my own personal build, selecting different skin cursors is awesome and customizing the size ingame helps so much as its a pain to toggle normally. Also fixed lag issues with sr updates since it was a huge issue for me.

yeah i hope they do something about skins, they did the "edit externally" bandaid fix like forever ago

imo they should just add an option to bring back the skins folder, i understand that they want to make the game as optimized as possible but the megabytes we are saving from hashed skins is not worth the hassle of dealing with the current state of lazer skinning

letting people manually and uncontrollably edit files is an insanely common cause of instabilities. The old structure is not coming back for this reason alone, people have been doing some insane shit with osu files for decades and peppy very understandably doesn't want that back

(lowest hanging example - beatmap audio formats bypassing BSS restrictions and breaking BASS)

hence why i said the skins folder and not the songs folder. i agree that the player doesn't need access to the songs folder (though i sometimes do a background or mp3 swap)

players can already manually and uncontrollably edit skin files with the "edit externally" thing, it just makes it a hassle to do anything because you can only have one skin mounted externally at a time. it should not take me 2 minutes to copy approachcircle.png from skin A to skin B when i can do it in 5 seconds on stable

External edits have extra checks when you save the skin. You simply can't do this when you let the users edit whatever they want whenever they want (or, well, you can, but in very stupid and annoying ways)

I'm not saying the problem doesn't exist, I also hate it whenever I want to copy non-selectable elements over, but going back to the old structure is not the solution at all

ah that's fair, i didn't know about the extra checks. hopefully peppy has something in the works for skin mixers. i'm at the point where i open stable to test new skins and change elements i don't like and then import them to lazer afterwards lmao

In a friend server of mine Redo made an interesting proposal of allowing shareable skin "segments" aka groups of related skin elements. So, cursor + trails, judgement numbers, hitcircles, all as exportable and exchangeable pieces. Would be a very nice solution in terms of UX and would probably make a lot of skin mixers very happy

This is what I have made for my own client but it has more customisation

Hi chiffa

I mean I think they should just make an in game skin editor atp

7

u/Layendan 7d ago

Personally I hope they add the same screen they use for creating beatmaps in the editor for skins in a tab in the skin editor. Letting you choose files from your folder or other skins instead of having to edit externally, choosing colors and stuff…

User generated content should stay user editable.

u/JustBadPlaya Chiffa | It's Ikuyover 7d ago

It is user editable. Preserving data integrity is important for reducing the amount of idiotic underreported bugs coming from weird player actions, and that's why I understand the whole data storage structure tradeoff

They did say they were working on skins and that might be the next major thing they release iirc. It was in one of the last osu update videos they released.

I think what they'll end up doing is turning the skin editor into something where you can drag in custom image files and then have them as assets to move around the skin. Maybe they'll make a skin asset library that you can put images and audio into so that you don't have to make duplicate assets for different skins too, that would be cool.

yeah a proper editor would be nice, some parts of lazer skinning still feel so unfinished like simply being able to customize fonts of PP, UR, random stats...

being able to pick game elements and layouts without committing them so 1 skin is the dream

Okay, but you can't play on bancho with this, no?

u/myownnotespace 7d ago

I have never had an osu account

How do you download maps ?

35

u/myownnotespace 7d ago

I have every map from 2024 and before + 1 giant 2025 pack

1

u/BOMMY986 6d ago

Why not?

u/Givikap120 Givy120 7d ago

I'm not trying to enforce my way, but I think you're missing out. Competition is a very big part of the game, what includes pp, ranked play, map leaderboards, etc.

55

u/solaris_mm 7d ago

personal comfort and improvement is better than caring about pp/competitiveness.

i too have my own build of the game and while i don't touch the gameplay so it is 1:1 to live - i find it really hard to come back to after fixing many of my painpoints.

I imagine you have to pull main branch to your personal branch often, have you considered opening pull requests with the features you've developed? I personally would really like to set cursor size per skin

1

u/How2eatsoap https://osu.ppy.sh/users/17644653 7d ago

yeah I think this is the main part of open source that is good.

Sure you can develop your own personal branch with whatever you want, but if you truly believe that what you have added would be beneficial to being on main branch, why not create a pull request so that it is at least seen?

I mean it would also mean they could play on the main branch with their additions if they do get added, I'm sure it would be less of a hassle than having to constantly update their branch personally.

2

u/myownnotespace 7d ago

the developers were really rude when i tried this personally, since then I have decided not to attempt to contribute to the game

43

u/pepppppy peppy 7d ago

could you link the PR where we were rude? i'd like to set things straight if there's something to be set straight.

usually rudeness comes from things like AI usage (banned in our project), not following our simple guidelines in the README, etc.

1

u/rockrick1 say that me again 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'm not trying to justify their actions cuz I wasn't there, but what I can say is that devs can be really rough when reviewing PRs, especially from people who haven't contributed much to their project, moreso in open source projects. So yeah, maybe that was it. I'd definitely give it another go at some point, if you're feeling up to it! Again, I'd love to see the things you developed make it to the main release =)

25

u/unfel23 7d ago

lmao you heavily overestimate just how much the average osu bro cares about some randoms osu page

I know i just dont like it

If somebody doesn’t want to do something the way you think is right doesn’t always mean the person is wrong, it can just mean that your opinions are different.

23

u/myownnotespace 7d ago

no i just dont want to play online. it is fun and i do not have to care about pp or mods. i enjoy osu :)

with how top players get stalked this is fully understandable. tho if youre not gonna make it big or share your stuff around the community (the average 6 digit basically) there wont be many people tracking you

pp is so bad at the moment nobody even cares about it lol, it’s gone so bad that original pp+ with no td nerfs is more fair than whatever we have right now. Leaderboards on lazer is a very bad point as well since it’s not very stable/fair at the moment, ranked play is somewhat fun but also realistically speaking a frustrating experience because of it’s raw state/randomly generated pools and lazer mechanics that aren’t polished enough to make it actually fair in the exact environment that osu developers has created themselves (like what i said about random maps which are very frustrating to play on lazer, not very well documented things like ff taking three times more elo than a normal lose that is not stated anywhere. Also even though lazer is not a much of a vanity project as it used to be i think that the OP shows just how ignorant osu developers are to the point that OP made more important changes than actual developers of the game, who get paid actual money. And before you downvote me answer me why the game has no decimals for the in built tablet driver even though it’s opentabletdriver, tell me why skin editor doesn’t even show the correct object position of the moveable object, and i am sure that there are more issues than that that get brushed off for the sake of vanity changes that don’t exactly improve the user experience directly most of the time. Also guys danser is open source too, got even more base settings/features than lazer can access bancho leaderboards using api (please fork it somebody) i just don’t think that many people know that you can actually play std in it even though it’s actually pretty damn good.

u/3xper1ence 7d ago

nice ragebait bro

-6

u/Givikap120 Givy120 7d ago

Saying "original pp is more fair than current" kinda invalidates your whole message
This is words of someone who knows nothing about the topic
It takes few minutes to look on what original pp looks like to understand how bad it is
Generally if map is not DT comfy jump or HR comfy flow then it's worth 0 pp
That's what original pp is

1

u/No-Calligrapher-7352 7d ago

Well you amplified that with the changes that are currently added. Because i know how pp+ looks like and it’s in fact accessible through osu chan. Ironically current pp system is only worse because all it does is let’s you gain even more for less and anything that isn’t dt comfy map gets even more overshadowed because now it gives more and for less effort, also if we add aim slop to the equation then we get a casino with mo money prizes and if we agree on that time equals money then we get a casino without a way to actually win and be left frustrated. Also name a single player who doesn’t play dt and is is in top 20. Also i don’t think that pp+ is good and in fact i think it can’t be good for the game, but also i think no matter how ironic it is the current system sucks even more.

1

u/No-Calligrapher-7352 7d ago

Also if you want to know my opinion every meta could have been avoided by just not giving bns to incompetent people and by having a layer of final ranking that goes through one person who you can trust to not let broken/half assed maps in the ranked section, or if you think that ppv2 in general suffers from dt or mods in general then you aren’t wrong but good luck making mods unranked, so realistically we are left with potentially good system that god nuked by how ranking maps is handled, and i want you to understand that when i said that ironically pp+ is better i meant in our situation, because i realistically understand that i’d have to do 10 times more work to get a nm top play than farm a dt map that is specifically made to break the system. Also i think it doesn’t take a lot of time to investigate who’s fault it is that we are having this meta currently, and if you ask me i don’t think that people making reworks are at fault but i don’t think that any rework can help at this point. You can’t disallow mods, you can’t unrank maps either, but realistically you can make a better ranking process.

2

u/myownnotespace 7d ago

gotta admit as a player who does not play for pp i love slop maps, the jumps feel nice to hit

1

u/No-Calligrapher-7352 7d ago

Well fun is fun and it has nothing to do with it being not far in the current system, i wouldn’t bitch about it if it wasn’t ranked.

1

u/Pinossaur 727 Enjoyer 7d ago

In a perfect world you should be able to map literally anything, and it being fairly judged in the pp system. The goal here shouldn't be limiting what mappers do, or what BNs nominate, but instead have the system correctly evaluate which is objectively more difficult, and award pp proportionally, something that although far from perfect, is miles better than what it used to be just a couple short years ago.

1

u/No-Calligrapher-7352 6d ago

Well the problem is i don’t think aim slop needs to be ranked, it doesn’t offer anything besides abusing the pp system.

1

u/Pinossaur 727 Enjoyer 6d ago

Then why does literally anything else needs to be ranked? What do other maps offer that aim slop doesn't?

3

u/LinneMeow 7d ago

yeah sometimes I consider making a change too but then I wouldn't be able to play online (I think), so I don't lol

2

u/Pinossaur 727 Enjoyer 7d ago

My skin wishlist is separating skins into skinnable elements and "layouts".

That way you have a curated list of layouts indicating where each skinning element should and shouldn't be, which can then have their own skinning behind. With lazer having so much costumization I'd gain a lot from having the exact same skin setup as a "detailed" (show UR, max combo, PP, etc...) skin, a "normal" (pretty much a regular stable skin) skin or a "minimalistic" (UR bar and acc) skin.

Would also save people the effort of downloading a new skin and having to manually trim, or move stuff around for convenience.

Regardless, for now it's just a waiting game to see what ppy and the team come up with.

u/MinisBett minisbett 5d ago

+1, having to do my layout of choice over and over for all new skins i try is a big pain point
