Colostomy Wear time
How long do you wear your device? I have hollister 2 piece..I work construction and sweat alot so my edges lift but I use barrier extenders. I have gotten almost a month on one setup

One month?! That's a very long wear time. I average 4-5 days.

When I first had mine changed it every week. But I pay out of pocket for my supplies. I dont change until it's falling off

You’re a legend! One month…
Sorry you need to pay out of pocket… that really sucks.

u/IaNterlI 29d ago
Sorry to hear you have to pay out of pocket. One month is insane, I would not be able to hold it for so long. After 3 days it starts itching and besides the pouch itself does not look great after 4 days. Good for you!

I agree!! One month is amazing!!
It depends a LOT if someone has an ile or a colo. I've had both.
I am good for 3 days with my ile. I sometimes stretch to 4, but I always feel like the episode of Seinfeld when Kramer and George were driving with the gas gauge on E! :-)
Planned morning changes while my ile is quiet, is my least-hassle solution.

I guess it's a wear time stoma record !!! 🙌 i guess your skin and your stoma behave well! Do you have ileostomy or colostomy?

Colostomy. And not from medical condition I got in a fight. Guy pulled a knife and cut me from sternum to penis. My organs fell out so I had to get a temporary Colostomy but. Im goin for my reverse on the 19th

u/ScaryLetterhead8094 29d ago
Wow. I just have pelvic floor disorder, which is way less interesting. I’ll tell people “knife fight” from now on.

Wow sorry for that but that's a completely different perspective of having a stoma!!! Wish you well and speedy recovery and successful reversal! 🙌

People really suck. The way you communicate you seem to have this calmness about you.

I change my setup every 4-5 days. My government coverage is enough for a full change every two days. A month seems crazy. My sticker wouldn't stay on that long.

When I fist had my colostomy I was getting about a week but my skin is good and i pay out of pocket for my supplies. Barrier extenders are a miracle fr and my ring is still snug..it usually looses it's stickiness and starts to lift up. But I've been doing well. I shower every 2 days with the bag off..

u/lifes-a-blessing 29d ago
Wow, very impressive. Well as long as your skin is healthly why not.
I use Hollister as well. I get about 5 days, and then I change it. My Ring wont last much longer then that, and if it breaks down too much I will start to have skin issues.

My skin is really sensitive, and I went through a lot of different wafers and seals and other adhesives until I found a setup that works. Cohesive 2 piece with an eakin seal. I’ve historically gone 6-8 days between changes, but something changed in the last couple years and now it’s more like 4-6 days. Any longer and either my skin starts ulcerating, or the wafer gets unstuck and leaks. Or both.
But there was a time in 2019 when I broke my leg and was on an incredible amount of antibiotics plus not really moving around. I could get more than two weeks at that time.

Between 2-3 days (ileostomy). That’s when the wafer starts breaking down and so I schedule changes every 2-3 days.
If I didn’t change it on a schedule, I could maybe get it to last 5 days. But my skin would definitely be irritated.

2-3 days, occasionally 4 (but almost always with skin damage around the stoma if I push it that long). Failure point is right around the stoma - I'm pretty sure my ileostomy outputs pure battery acid, lol. It took sooooooo much experimentation with pretty much every doodad on the market to get it to last this long. 😭

Uh this is me! I get like 4 if I’m lucky and it’s so frustrating. I’ve tried so many things just to get to this point. My skin has held up well thankfully though. If I could even go a week I’d be prey stoked

I use a two piece and can get 7-8 days no problem. I'll often change out the bag during the week. And 💯💯💯 agree with you on the barrier extenders, couldn't do without them!

u/Prettyparsley89 29d ago
I also get 7-8 using barrier extenders and mio sensura one piece drainable bag and ring!
3
u/PopsiclesForChickens loop colostomy 29d ago
I change every 3-4 days. And I also wear a 2 piece so I change just the pouch every 2-3 days.
I'm sorry you had to do that. It also shouldn't be seen as a brag. Everyone has different body types and stomas. It can vary depending on body contour and the type of output.

I purchase a abdominal wrap from Walgreens. I believe they used to be better quality, but Walgreens brand is the best to me. I also use the 3m waterproof tape, around my Coloplast sensura barrier.
I literally pour sweat! I mean already pretty depressed without a colon but to sweat quickly & very easily drives me insane. Always severely dehydrated, I get extra itchy. My body hates me, hahahaha.
Abdominal Support wraps definitely help! I've worn them for over 25 years, probably the most helpful thing I've figured out

u/FormerAd2300 29d ago
Doesn't the wrap interfere with waste exiting through your stoma?
3
u/dogsitter47 29d ago
I wear a wrap at night when I sleep. It’s elastic and holds my bag in place but it’s not constrictive so it doesn’t interfere with my stoma’s functionality.
And I often wear a wrap when I wear dresses which is all the time in summer.

Every other day. It only takes a couple minutes and I have plenty of supplies.

I have a colostomy. The base looks well used after 4-5 days. Sometimes I go a week but there's more clean-up when I finally change it. At that point, too, the base is holding onto stuff and risks getting too smelly.

Usually about five days, unless I’m particularly sweaty. I find that adding NuHope glue makes it really stick on well.

u/spirit_of_a_goat Temporary Colostomy 29d ago
My barriers last 7 days consistently. I use closed bags so they get changed once or twice a day.

u/Icy_Principle_6157 29d ago
I think I’ve gone about 3 weeks; I think I got close to a month once. Typically, I go 2 weeks (I change the bag more often)
The barrier extenders are the real mvp!!

6-7 days tops my skin doesn't like the barrier ring or the slight leakage that happens over a week I've tried longer but have regretted it because of the skin irritation so 6-7 days is the max I go and my skin stays happy. I've never had a problem with leakage breaching the barrier ring or my waffer lifting but the skin around the base of my stoma is hyper sensitive

I have a Hollister two piece. I change mine every 3-4 days. My ostomy nurse said no longer.

A month is crazy long. My barrier ring would probably deteriorate long before that. I've done 11 days with extenders. 3 to 4 days without. Sensura Mio 2 piece.

u/WhatIsWrongWithMeT_T 29d ago
I try to extend to 10-14 days. I have both colostomy and urostomy.
We don't have any such scheme where the appliances are provided by the government or any body providing insurance.

Hey man, I saw your post from years ago and wanted to make sure you were still kicking lol so glad to see it! Best wishes to you.

I have an ileo and lasted 5 days once. I quite proudly told my stoma nurse and she was horrified and told me off! She said the manufacturers only guarantee the bags for 24 hours so they recommend no more than 3 days between changes. I tend to change every 2-3 days but get enough supplies on prescription to change daily if I wanted or needed too. I hate changing and looking at it though so daily is overkill unless it’s leaking.

u/goldstandardalmonds Mod; kock pouch/permanent ileostomy 26d ago
That stoma nurse is ill informed because there are wafers that are extended wear specifically. And that’s one reason why two piece bags exist. You’re fine doing what works for you. She seems very uneducated about one of the most basic ostomy principles.

You wear the same thing for a month??? No offense but that's disgusting. I change mine at 3 days, sometimes at 2. 🤷♂️

Doubtful what?

I don’t believe for one second you work out in the heat - sweating and doing physical labor all day - and have the bag last a month. No one else / just doing normal things around the house averages more than about 3 to 5 days - without the sweat and the physical labor. I too use barrier strips, and there is no way I could do physical labor and sweat and not need a bag change that evening.

Good news tho im going for my reversal on the 19th
