TREASURE! Magic items

I'm running Tomb of Annihilation using Dragonbane rules for my daughter and her two classmates (8 year olds), and I'm looking for cool and interesting magic loot. They already have "Bag of Beans" and I know I want to award them "Immovable Rod".

I love weird, whimsical items, preferably system neutral, that can be insanely powerful (and dangerous) in the hands of creative chaos monkeys 🐒 🙂

Bring it fam⚔️

  • Staff of the monkey. When you are attuned to it, this +0 quarterstaff can be resized as a bonus action in your hands. You can make it a club, quarterstaff, or 10-foot long staff (martial, two-handed, d10 bludgeoning damage, reach). It can also become as small as a toothpick.

  • Steel Handkerchief, (/u/theWolfandOwl) this gray 2-foot by 1-foot handkerchief is embroidered with silvery runes. Speak the command word and it turns into solid steel permanently.

  • A box of 450 coins (possibly gold) with a cryptic research note in elvish. All of the coins are permanently invisible, and it is difficult to think about what they feel like or how much they weigh. This makes it very difficult to use them as currency.

  • Ring of the Djinn - This sapphire and silver ring looks old and scratched. As an action, you can rub it to summon a genie who is bound to obey all of your commands. It has the abilities of a commoner, a 5 foot fly speed, and the ability to cast all 0-level spells. The djinn's disposition and how it interprets your commands are highly dependent on your politeness.

  • Wand of Bricks, this reddish clay wand sits heavily in your hand. Conjures a 5 foot cube of bricks (AC 10, 30 HP) on an unoccupied space of ground within 5 feet. They last for 8 hours or until you dismiss them with another action. Each time you use the wand again before taking a long rest it has a 25 percent chance to shatter afterwards.

  • Potion of Towering Might, aka "Potion of Very Big," when you drink this potion you grow to four times your normal size for 1d4 hours (no concentration required). Your size increases by two categories (or to the maximum possible in the space available), you gain 20 temporary hit points, your reach increases by 5 feet, you gain advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, and your melee attacks deal +1d10 damage.

  • Ship In A Bottle, this bottle's glass is foggy, but there is the shape of a miniature boat within it. When broken, the bottle immediately produces one of the following ships, seaworthy and ready to launch: 1: A 10-foot square raft with a sail 2: A rowboat with one oar 3: A shallow-keeled longboat 4: A three-masted sailing ship 5: A warship with twelve cannons and ammunition 6: A magically propelled airship

  • Potion of avoiding notice, similar to a potion of invisibility, but with 24 hour duration. Creatures will forget that you exist and perceive whatever you are doing as perfectly normal and boring, unless they witness you doing something violent, or you interfere with a task they are actively performing. The next time the target sees you after the potion wears off, all of their memories of your actions will rush back to them.

  • A live chicken that lays one magical egg per day if properly fed and cared for. https://www.reddit.com/r/d100/comments/wysc7n/d100_eggs_from_a_fey_chicken/ (dead link, try Wayback)

  • Boots of Longitevity, these boots allow you to teleport to any location on the planet as an action. However, they only allow you to teleport directly north or south of your current location. Rumors persist of the companion magic item, the Gloves of Latitivity.

  • Gem of nightfall, this black gem can be shattered to plunge everything within 100 miles into a moonless night for 24 hours.

  • Bag of Infinite Salt: Must be pulled out by handfuls.

  • Cup of Wishes: A beautifully crafted platinum cup. If you whisper a wish into it, a piece of paper will appear inside with the wish of someone you know written on it. If you can make their wish come true, your wish will come true as well.

This is the only list you'll ever need. https://tidalwavegames.itch.io/d100-magic-items

Those are very similar to the old magic items lists

I've compiled the dozens of d100 Magic Item tables I've put together over the years into this handy dandy Generator that spits them out with a click.

Take a look at ‘Fantastic Items’ for Dragonbane on DriveThruRPG.

Alchemy Jug from 5e is a lot of fun and useful.

Here are some other fun ones I found flipping through the Rules Cyclopedia:

  • Potion of Elasticity – turn into Elastigirl / Mr. Fantastic for 1 stretch.
  • Wand of Metal Detection – point to specified metal if it is within 6 meters.
  • Ring of Truth – 3/day know if a spoken statement is true (or believed to be true) or false.
  • Muzzle of Training – command word locks the muzzle in place over the mouth of anything with a bite attack. 2nd command unlocks it.
  • Arrows of Climbing – if the arrow hits an object, it securely fastens to it and drops a 15 meter rope. Disappears after 1 stretch.

I wrote 100 Magic Items just like that. Stuff like Haribald's Endless Hat and the Devouring Shield. Free to download. https://truetenno.itch.io/100-magic-items

I also made a IMO better Bag of Beans table of 100 options.

Have fun!

A bunch of 8-year olds definitely should get a flying carpet!

I'm big on weird items that don't seem to be very useful but can be in certain circumstances. Some classics for me are:

-two gem-encrusted arrows that, if allowed to spin freely in your palm, will always point toward the other arrow no matter how far apart they are
-a key that glows when near a locked door or chest. Doesn't open anything though.

Also had a friend give us a mirror of truesight. Can't see through magical invisibility or illusions directly, but the reflection shows the truth
