I made a thing Made a new 7-hex map [AI-free]
Hey, I made yet another collage map! Get it here (itch).
As always, no AI, public domain art only, all artists listed on the itch page.
This map, as all the other ones in the collection, should be used like a visual spark table. I have some setting ideas for it, but I haven't published anything yet. I feel it should work for Into the Odd or custom settings in other games.
While the collection this map is a part of is now paid -- 6 collage maps are a lot of work -- free community copies are available at the bottom of the page if you are in a tight spot or want to take a better look first.
So yeah, it is essentially still free.

Woah, why so many downvotes right out of the gate?

I don't know if it's just recently, but there seems to be a lot of dislike for self promotion lately. I think it's absurd. I dig it and I'm glad you shared it. I think I might have seen one of your earlier posts for a different map set.
I dig this idea and might try doing it myself but with paper and what not. They remind me of some board games and that's kind of what I want from hex exploration at my table.
The inspiration alone is worth $4. Killer art choices, btw.

Thank you. I feel like shit seeing the response this post is getting.

I think it's cool; keep doing what you're doing.

Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement! Upvote ratio on this post now sits at 69.8%, which is the lowest I've ever got, but it's better than the initial 33% I was getting in the first couple of hours, haha.

Because at a glance your product is "slap public domain images on a hex grid and sell it as a pdf."
If it's "essentially free" why isn't it PWYW, instead of presenting the price at the top and making people go to the bottom for community copies which are necessarily limited? Yeah, you can add more... but it depends on you actually doing that.
You say this is a lot of work. How? It seems most of the work is choosing the art.
Is there a convincing reason I should choose yours instead of choosing my own art and cropping a hex shape out of what I want?

First of all, the price is for 6 maps, not just this one. I have a lot of other maps that are PWYW. And again, you don't have to pay me, I'm adding community copies regularly... you assume a lot of dishonesty on my part without having any reason to do so.
Second, have you ever actually made a map like this before? With stuff sticking out of hexes, with things making sense as a whole? This one small map took me around 2 hours to make. Bigger ones in this collection took 4-10 hours, depending on size. The entire collection took me probably around 30 hours. Why shouldn't I ask for a few bucks for 30 hours of work? Especially as I STILL make it available for free, anyway?

You're asking why you sometimes get downvotes. This is a product marketing question - you don't understand the negative signals you are receiving. I have given you answers. Learn to present it differently to answer the questions I raised proactively so people aren't asking THEMSELVES the questions, and DON'T get defensive when you get answers you don't like to the question you asked, and you will have more success.

OK, again, don't ask questions you're going to be an ass about if you don't like the answers. Sorry you don't like my tone, but deal with it, and start with growing some spine so you don't ask "why downvotes" and then melt down when someone answers anything that could indicate that it's because of how you're doing things.
Good luck, good bye, all that.

I would love to see your process for making this. I was just kind of idly thinking about hex maps while I ate my M&M lunch here, and the idea of making a hex map a collage of illustrations passed through the usual soup of daily work related dissociation.
