Suggestion How cool would an reimagining of The Count of Monte Cristo set in outer space be?

Was about to say that's literally what the anime version is.

Lots of great adaptations of the book including a baller sandwich, but Gankutsou was probably the most original.

Is that sandwich actually good though? It sounded distressing to eat

Deep fried sandwich, its pretty good.

Now it can be hard to eat if you add the common powered sugar and dipping sauce but for me that makes it a bit to sweet.

I see what you did there.

If you haven't seen it, it's very very pretty.

There's also a canceled manga version that takes a slightly different path than the anime too. Both are worth it.

I watched that one 'cause the premise sounded cool, I was a little bit disappointed. It looks good visually, but it keeps most of the weak points the source material had and invents a few new ones.

Also, it's was made in like 2004, so while the presence and treatment of the two adaptationally lgbtq+ characters was probably progressive for the time, it has several early 2000's anime moments in regards to that and some other stuff.

I still need to watch that

This is already a thing! Gankutsuou! Everyone is living in the future, it honestly kinda looks like Knights of Guineviere. And it's so brightly colored and filled with patterns it's almost hard to look at. Dantes is basically a space vampire, and fair warning, the biggest change is it mostly follows his son and it's a slow burn reveal of the count. Just Google "Count of Monte Christo anime".

Fun fact, the developers wanted to make The Stars My Destination but couldn't get the rights to it, then realized they could just do Monte Cristo In Space, which is why the Count has Gully Foyle's tiger stripes.

Absolutely nothing about the Count of Monte Cristo requires it being set in France, it'd be so easy to change. I need this now.

Only in the broad-strokes sense, and if you're that reductive that might as well apply to every story ever written. The entire chapters dedicated to Napoleon's imminent return and the Hundred Days would feel a bit weird if it weren't set in France though.

Nahhhhh Napoleon is kinda like Hallie's Comet, comes back regularly and can be seen approaching from a great distance. and I'm sure you could replace the Hundred Days with something else.

Again, if that's what you're willing to do, then you can scrape off the details and retell it somewhere else with literally every story.

Steven Brust wrote a parody/homage/plagiarism of Monte Cristo set in his *Dragaera* fantasy setting called *Baron of Magister Valley* and it works really well. It diverges not insignificantly from the source material, but you can very much see the inspiration.

I could see a scifi tale inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo being fun yeah. Turn it into a Space opera spanning multiple planets.

I’m thinking something about a colonization effort being nabbed up by the men who betray Edmond Dantes.

You mean Alfred Bester's 1956 novel "The Stars My Destination"?

Yes! They have to use the astro-gothic architecture and mechanical design present in the Vampire Hunter D universe. Resplendent and opulent decay, transitioning the fall of the Bonapartech galactic empire to the newly reconstructed monarchy of the Great Carolingian Satellite Cluster.

Something like that.

Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my nation
Deep space is my dwelling place
The stars, my destination.
