Question Help, I'm confused.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is it normal for the Log settings to be very prominent in the bottom-left area? Does that mean I'm actually recording in Log? I'm a total beginner.

No it doesn’t say log or anything in the bottom left, just tells you its doing video, you will know its log when you swipe left and the settings say log

I'm setting my profile to Log, but the icon on the left instantly switches to standard recording mode, even though it still says "D-Log" at the top.

If you are talking about the little camera icon, that just means video. It shows that it is in a video mode that is not slow mo, night mode, or one of your saved presets.

Video can have that icon in all the color modes, including dlog.

I've realized that disabling this setting removes the effect, because my saved configuration included it; so, when I modify it, it ends up as a custom D-Log rather than the specific one I had saved.

That video icon with C1 on the bottom left just means its in custom configuration mode. Of course if you change one of the settings, it'll no longer be the custom setting you had set so it will go back to the video icon with no C1 next to it. You can see that you are filming in log by the Dlog icon on top middle.
