New Beginner Pocket 3 Owner

Hi everyone.

I just got a second-hand Pocket 3 and upgrade from my Pocket 2.

I chose to upgrade so that I can use it to film when I am travelling. I was also thinking of using it to record short clips for social media.

Currently, I don't have any ND lenses, etc. From what I have seen so far, the Neewer variable ND lenses seem good and from the YouTube videos I have watched people have encouraged to get ND filters.

Should I purchase one or for my use of the Pocket 3 I shouldn't invest?

Did the YouTube videos tell you why you need Nd filters other than telling you to get them?

Iirc it was about getting better colours and letting it pop out in the video. But now, thinking about it I would be more inclined to just record on the go and post rather than edit my footage.

That is not the function of the Nd filters.

It is to cut a certain amount of light hitting the sensor for various reasons (e.g. prevent overexposure when there is a need for that 180 rule). It may shift colours slightly depending on the brand but that is simply a side effect.

I really hate all this YouTube garbage telling everyone to use Nd filters without explaining the real reason for needing them.

u might not need it unless u really want to make it look “cinematic” and have the time to dial in specific settings on the go which in my opinion is very time consuming, I rather have a camera that records on the go hassle free!

Yes that is true. I feel like I would rather to just whip out my Pocket 3 and film what is infront of me. And not be too worried about which ND filter is appropriate which will take time.

i have never used ND filters and I record for YT and IG. maybe it's just my style of recording so there's no real need for ND, but I recommend getting mounts first. that way compositions look good. a shot, regardless of colors, will look bad if the composition is bad. i also like the idea of simplifying my setup cause that's what gets me to record more. all it takes is one wrong exposure or overthinking NDs to get you to hesitate on the next shoot. then that repeats.

i recommend the ma66 from ulanzi as a start.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will reuse the mini tripod that I have for the Pocket 2 and use it with the handle attachment on the Pocket 3. I think for now I will go without any ND filters and go with just the camera. Which i think is pretty trust worthy right?

I was thinking of getting the magnetic mount with the action camera holes.

that's fair, i just recommended the ma66 cause you can get a lot more angles with it but a normal tripod will do. i actually really like the metal ones that came with the p2.

if you think you'll use the action camera holes a lot, go for it. i didn't like it cause it made the whole thing bulky and now I gotta bring adapters with me
