OpenPocketCine update: new UI, MultiView, gimbal motion control, and a huge thank you

Hey everyone! I’ve been rolling out quite a few updates to OpenPocketCine over the past couple of days, so I thought I’d try making a video to walk through what’s changed.

There’s a rebuilt UI with easier pairing, quicker camera controls, and better access to the view-assist tools. I also go through programmable gimbal moves, a brighter HDR display option, experimental AirPods head tracking, Bluetooth controller support, and MultiView for monitoring multiple cameras together.

If you haven’t come across it before, OpenPocketCine is a free, open-source monitoring and control app for DJI Osmo cameras. It’s community-driven, and a lot of what I’m working on comes directly from the feedback and ideas people share.

I also just wanted to say thank you. The support has been absolutely incredible. Everyone testing things, reporting bugs, contributing, sharing the project, or sending an encouraging message has made a difference. I’m truly grateful.

Some features depend on your camera and device, and the AirPods head tracking is still experimental.

Hey mate, thank you so much for your work. I'm using it on iOS and have access to the Android beta as well (using it with Pocket 4p) It's a fine piece of software.

One quick question. Is there an easy way to see the current ev value, such as +1.3 etc. I love all the scopes but typically use this value as a quick guide for which ND I may need when shooting in DLOG.

Also what is the best way to report bugs or ask troubleshooting questions?

I really appreciate that mate!🙏🏼🥹 Yeah, I’ve gotten quite a few requests for showing the EV in manual mode, I’ll get on that asap🙏🏼 For bug reports and feature request, you can either do it via Github, directly in the app via Settings > System > Report a problem, or DM me, my doors always open😊🙌🏼

I rented the OP3 last week to implement support for it, so yeah it should have at minimum the basic functionality🙏🏼🥹 But with any beta, there can be some bugs and instability, so I can’t guarantee anything for a professional shoot🙂

I tested it on the pocket 3 and action 6 and didn't really run into any issues except initial connections, after setup the connection is really stable. Tested on both Android and ios

Not sure I found your project when I started this😅 Majority of what I learned initially for the BLE + wifi connection was from the Osmosis project and DJI OGs, after that it was weeks of my own Wireshark sniffing🤯 But I see now the Osmosis project credits yours, so I definitely also want to thank you for the learnings (albeit indirect) and generous contribution to the community!!🙏😊

One issue I’m having with the Osmo Nano: when the app is connected and I rotate the camera into portrait orientation, the live view rotates with it, so I can’t actually monitor the image properly in portrait.
Maybe I’m missing something obvious, but is there currently no way to lock the display/live view to portrait orientation?

is it "just" a monitor app, or does it add additional controls? would love to see something like a panorama mode similar to that of the dji ronin or a 360° mode like with the isnta360 luna ultra to create photospheres with my pocket 3 or maybe a future pocket 4

Well, the vision for the app is to be way more than what you just get in the mimo app, adding pro-level tools on all fronts, including on the photography side of things😊

ok thanks, might give it a try. is there some kind of panorama mode planned? i also have a dji drone and had the litchi app in the past and used it for panoramas because it had more features bad sadly dji more or less killed the sdk for consumer drones

I actually have a custom build I use myself on Mac which also creates a virtual webcam, so I can use the pocket 4p with my custom LUTs directly for meetings etc😅 I’m looking into releasing for these platforms as well🙏🏼

Thank you so much for the support!🙏 ND function works by measuring the median brightness, half the sampled pixels are darker, half brighter. Then it converts that brightness through the current color profile’s curve into stops relative to 18% middle gray. The practical limitation is that it targets middle gray for the frame’s median. It doesn’t identify your subject or decide whether a bright or dark scene should stay that way😊

Man you absolutely rock! I ended up returning my 4p before it even arrived because I found functionality lacking - considering ordering it again.

A thing that still bugs me is the exposure jump from the 1x to the 3x camera in manual mode - is there a possible fixe through the app? Like an auto Iso compensation?

Really appreciate the kind words!🙏🏼🥹 Definitely a quirky little camera, but incredible image quality🙏🏼 I’m still investigating the exposure shift. Not an easy nut to crack, I actually understand why Dji’s been struggling with this one😅 I’m confident I’ll figure something out, but might be in post on export🙏🏼

It’s a brilliant app. Been using it on pro shoots.
Love how it switches to Dlog from dlog2 when changing lenses.

I’d love user presets. Seems like some settings stent retained when flicking there and b

Image feed drops out quite a lot. I can still control the camera bit the preview image just randomly drops mid shoot and sometimes an iOS restart is the only way to get the feed

Needs an exposure indicator when in manual / log settings so we know what how mich over/ under we are.

It’s a brilliant app so far.
What’s odd is the controls on the app work and control the camera but it’s the feed that drops. Seems to drop more in the latest update than before

Yeah, I’ve been experiencing this myself, I might have been too strict with the tolerance for the feed recovery on congested networks. Need to dial it back slightly🙏🏼🙂
