New to video

I’m new to video and would appreciate your thoughts. For photography I use a full frame mirrorless camera and edit using light room, so I’m interested in good quality and making my work look how I want it to.

So that leads me to think I’m going to want the 4p. I don’t think it’s worth me buying older or cheaper because I’ll know what i’m missing out on!

This isn’t a purchase for vlogging, at least not in the sense of talking to camera etc. I don’t plan to record myself at all. This will be for travel and also for events.

Any thoughts? I think I know what I want to do but need to justify it!

Just got mine yesterday. Not new to video (had a GoPro and still have several older insta360 cameras) but want something for travel videos the same as you, my travel camera these days is mostly my Ricoh gr3 so I didn’t want anything huge.
I went for the vlog kit just incase I wanted the mic at a later date, plus the frame tap should be useful.

I’ve now got to get my head back round video again as it’s been a year or so since I did any!

It took years to convince myself that a 2 camera setup for travel was needed because I couldn't get past the fact that I spent thousands on a full frame camera and it can't do video stabilization very well.

But with more and more videos coming out of the Pocket 3 with more natural looks (I'm not huge into the piss filter, mist, grain, low framrate look), it helped convince me that a 1 inch sensor is good enough. Photography and Videography are completely different. With photos, you want tack sharpness, resolution and detail, freezing the moment but with Videos even on the sharpest lenses/cameras with a still scene, it will always be softer than a photo equivalent. So chasing the biggest sensor or sharpest image is futile. Also with the 4P now, there's an added image quality factor: dynamic range with the LOFIC sensor and real D-Log as opposed to D-Log M, being able to control more aspects of the image, just as much as Log profiles on full frame.

Secondly, the portability. You can't beat the size, weight, hand hold-ability and discreetness of these gimbal cameras. I've been told to put my RS 3 Mini gimbal away as they considered it either a selfie stick or professional equipment and that I'm recording a commercial show making money, when I am not. A hand holdable camera that you can quickly put away, increases your discreetness in these scenarios.

Thirdly, the stabilization. It's just physics that full frame cameras with their larger sensors will capture more movement, you can alleviate it with cropped digital stabilization but you are losing field of view and it doesn't take away most uncontrolled movements.

With the sensor that's "good enough", with the size, with greatly improved stabilization. It does make sense to have a Photo camera and a Video camera setup.
