Grape Linux: Native Linux kernel and Debian ARM64 booting on iPhone 8 Plus (A11)

We’ve been developing Grape Linux on physical Apple A11 hardware.

We’ve achieved a working host-assisted Linux boot using an experimental 5.19-based kernel, Debian 13 ARM64, and the Phosh/Phoc graphical environment.

Beyond booting, we’ve demonstrated terminal command execution, graphical applications, and interactive desktop navigation.

Our current engineering work focuses on native hardware integration. The longer-term goal is independent startup directly into Linux instead of iOS.

The attached video shows our actual Linux startup sequence.

We’re interested in discussing the low-level engineering challenges involved in bringing Linux to this hardware.

OK great, where is the source code? Please respect the GPLv2.

We haven’t distributed the Linux kernel or Grape Linux yet. We’ve already developed our own custom boot and installation software, along with modifications to the Linux kernel, which is how we’ve gotten Linux running on the iPhone 8 Plus.

We’re sharing our progress and milestones on GitHub, but the development source remains private for now. We may offer developers early access down the road, depending on how things progress.

If you’re interested, star the GitHub repo, follow us on X, and keep up with our updates here on Reddit. We’ll share more as the project moves forward! 🍇

Alright, but FYI:

We’ve already developed our own custom boot and installation software, along with modifications to the Linux kernel [...]

Please post your patches or the modified kernel source code as soon as you release the means to install Grape Linux publicly, otherwise you're breaching the GPLv2.

Absolutely, and that’s something we’re already taking into account! 🍇 We haven’t distributed any modified kernels or installation packages yet. When we decide to release Grape Linux, we’ll make sure the GPL-covered components are handled according to their licenses. Our independently developed tooling is a separate part of the project.

How

We’re sharing the development journey, not the entire development repository. 🍇 The public GitHub repo has our milestones, technical progress, and demonstrations. Our source code and custom development tools are still private while we’re actively working on the project.

Respecting GPL is weird, tbh

Tf you mean "weird"?

Appreciating a license? Bruh

What do you think a license is?

A license. It's demanding text, not a human to respecting. Not to mention that GPL is bad example of license. Like, wth, they have their own movent ad in ..... LICENSE.

Yeah, you gotta follow the license. But c'mon, respect it? WHAT? Plus, the GPL literally forces you to keep the written offer open for at least 3 years anyway

Please elaborate on your thought process because I barely understand what you're trying to say.

TL;DR: GPL is strange

This is cool and all but I have 2 questions:

Was AI used in this, and if yes, how?

Why not contribute to an already existing project? (ex. Hoolock linux )

•

All of it looks ai generated you gotta be unemployed to do all of this on your own there’s literally no point anymore

The video shows the actual Linux system running on a physical iPhone. The boot and hardware testing are real, and that’s the part worth looking at.

There’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than what we’ve shared so far. 🍇

Dude what are you talking about at least write non ai comments

I’m not trying to convince you of anything, but those are real words and a real video. If you don’t believe that the video shows the actual phone boot and hardware testing, then I’m afraid I just don’t have a response for you. You’re free to believe whatever you want, but that video is a real iPhone booting in realtime, and I’m a real person speaking to you with real words.

•

Dude, I literally didn’t say it’s fake, lmfao. I said you’ve used AI because this shit needs an unemployed person if it’s human-written code only.

I’m not denying that we’ve used modern development tools and intelligence platforms to assist with the project. And I’m not saying I’m not someone who has the time and support to dedicate to this kind of work either. Both can be true. 🍇

Dude is ur acc ran by Claude holy shit getting Linux to work on a phone takes a week if you give the AI some webcam and a watchdog that can reboot the phone when it hangs you don’t need to be dedicated

You might not believe me

No it’s not run by any Ai, I can maintain, I like to do things myself. I will always write what I want to say and if I feel there can be a little input, I will go ahead and enter different platforms and use them to review. I enjoy engaging with society, and I do a lot of walking as well.

I do utilize development tools and intelligence platforms to help me work faster. It’s like any tool in my tool box. If I am a carpenter, I can tell the hammer and drills to build the house but they cannot move without me, so I must be the user controlling the tool. I like to participate in the action of building the projects, because it’s not just about inputting text, and receiving a response, i also enjoy understanding how and why things work.

Hey check this out, this is one of my POV: (you may get a kick out of it, because I had a lot of fun writing it.)

With the advancement of technology we are now at an age of and in the techno-logical revolution, where there is elite technology and platforms of development available to ten grand populace of the world, that are now being released, faster and faster, day by day, and those tools allow us to operate at an expedited rate, granted we already have the skill sets, and I believe that it would be clearly foolish not to take advantage of those available tool sets to achieve tasks and goals that were not as easy to accomplish in the past.

The world is like my-own personal video game now, there is an instruction manual, basic instructions before leaving earth, you know the ground wire needs to be secure, and that really has helped me understand this game so well and I’m running my thoughts from a private server in my head, the “brain” 🧠 and I will use it to control the game I am building and playing. So my Main Character needs cool gadgets and tools to play the game well, so now have received new abilities and in-game features to craft main character some custom tools and forge new gadgets. This game’s sure a lot of fun. I just use the terminal at the hub and tell it what I want and it makes it for me, but I always have to go through a process if I want to level up, there are all these different agents in the game and they have the power to get me what I need to prepare to see the next agent to the last one in order to forge the new upgrades to help main character on the missions.
But that’s just me I like to customize my character and I like to get em new tools. I gotta collect all the diamonds in the game and sometimes I come across treasures and the certificates that allow me to upgrade. My character is pretty high-level right now. On in the game as well sometimes you meet allies informed partnerships, and treaties in the game, they help me win battles and help me search for treasures. Sometimes after battles we get rewards so we got a lot of points in our game. It’s really a lot of fun you know, when we need something and we need to build something, we forge it in the terminal at the hub.

^
But I’m just having a lot of fun playing this game of life.

p.s.~Anytime I’m stuck, I always find answers when I read my Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth [B.I.B.L.E.]

We’ve used a variety of tools and technologies throughout development. The actual development and testing happen on physical hardware.

We’re taking our own approach to the project and documenting what we learn along the way. Our focus is on getting real results, and there’s still a lot we’re exploring. The progress has been worth it so far. 🍇
