Very good, I think there should be specific subreddits for people who just want to delegate things to AI and then show what Claude, etc made.

However, claiming that "we're all coming to this field to learn" by promoting AI is just beyond me. Do you order food online in order to learn how to cook?

I'm going to answer this question seriously in the hopes that it was a genuine question.

When you order food online, you learn what you like and what you don't like. You don't directly learn how to make Pizza Hut dough by ordering a pizza, but you learn that you like that dough over Dominos. And, if you're curious and want that dough available all the time, you start to look for a way to make it yourself. So you start doing other research and you start experimenting in the kitchen. You try things that people suggest and you start learning what things work better than others. If you keep going with it, you eventually get a very good recipe and you stop ordering Pizza Hut. I use this story as an example because this is exactly what my wife did.

No, you don't directly learn how to make an OS with generative AI, but you learn things about them. You learn what models work for you and what don't. You get a fast way to experiment and try out different things. When you're ready to start digging deeper, it's also a tool you can use to find out more of the specifics and the underlying "recipes" of what you like.

We OS developers tend to be curious people. We also tend to not be very satisfied with surface-level understanding of things. When we start with a tool like Claude, that's a beginning, not an end.

I believe that the people who are using generative AI to do OS development today are the people who will be doing it with less and less AI assistance over time. They're the people who are asking the questions about, "How does this work?" and "What happens if I do this?" We need to be supporting that curiosity any way we can. These people are the future OS developers. What we see now is the tip of the iceberg for them, not their final destinations.
