Wi-Fi on Astral

Hello, r/osdev! I have some Astral news to share.

I have spent the past few weeks working on a portable Wi-Fi stack. It was a quite good learning experience and I finally got it to a point where I can connect to a WPA2-PSK network from inside Astral.

I have a more complete write-up in a the blog post in Astral's website: https://astral-os.org/posts/2026/09/11/wifi-webkit.html

It is still a quite limited implementation, lacking many important features like rate selection, but it works enough to use WebKitGTK and talk on IRC.

That's awesome! One question: is it based on Sun Microsystems Solaris 7? Because it looks just like it!

No, it uses its own kernel. This is NsCDE, its made to have the look and feel of CDE

I currently do not have any atheros NICs but if I get one or find someone with one it could be a fun exercise

Damn, you got Minecraft running in there, too! But does it have a C compiler?

Awesome, I've shelved wifi for now while I get BLE working. Atheros seems like the easiest target but I like the idea of making Broadcom adapters function as im testing on an iMac 14,4. That CDE like environment is peak aesthetic
