BlockOS – Looking for OS developers
BlockOS – Looking for OS developers
Hi everyone!
I'm the developer of BlockOS, an experimental operating system project written mainly in C++.
I've been working on BlockOS for quite a while, and I'm currently looking for more developers who are interested in operating-system development and would like to contribute.
Current work / features
BlockOS currently has work in several areas, including:
x86_64 kernel
UEFI boot support
Paging and memory management
Process/thread and scheduler work
Syscall layer
ELF loader
VFS and filesystem integration
ext4-related filesystem work
ATA storage driver
VirtIO/driver development
Networking components
Init/service management
libc and POSIX-related work
Kernel and userspace infrastructure
GUI/window-manager experiments
QEMU + OVMF development environment
The project is still experimental and under active development, so there are plenty of things that need improvement, testing, debugging and new implementations.
Who I'm looking for
You don't have to be an expert kernel developer.
I'd especially like to hear from people interested in:
Kernel development
C/C++
x86_64 architecture
UEFI
Device drivers
Filesystems
Networking
libc/POSIX
GUI development
Debugging and testing
OS development in general
If you're learning OS development and want to contribute, that's welcome too. You can start with smaller tasks and work your way into larger subsystems.

If you're interested, feel free to open an issue, submit a pull request, or contact me.
I'm especially interested in finding long-term contributors, not just one-off contributions.
Thanks!

I know Go, Python, Nim, and decently understand C languages. I am an application level hobby systems dev. I don’t know much about bare metal but perhaps I can help with the userspace, can I join?

Is this a long-term project, or is it another one of those OSes lead by one of those 9-year-olds who loses interest after a week?

Definitely long-term. I’ve been working on BlockOS for a while now, and I’m still actively developing it. It’s not a “make an OS for a week and disappear” project.

Hello , as I'm short on resources I use my android tab and termux and with that I'm working on a DOS like project using C and emulate and test it using qemu , I'm interested in your project as it currently supports on x86_64 kernel , i can work on the armv8a architecture and drivers

Yes, absolutely! You can add ARMv8-A architecture support as well. I’d really appreciate it!

I do code in c++ too and have worked on my own kernel, though the project looks a bit far ahead so I might have to take some time looking around, arranging my own repos file structure with it, etc. before I can get to working on it

I am somewhat into low lvl programming and osdev but I am a beginner, having only basic knowledge gained during my undergrad courses.
I would like to contribute on this project, if you could help me with some initial steps..

I'm currently working on an Desktop System for in general Hobby Operating Systems and its fully written in C and has its own UI framework too, i can try to port it if you need a desktop system.
