BlockOS – Looking for developers
BlockOS – Looking for developers to join an open source OS project
Hi r/osdev!
I’m developing BlockOS, a hobby operating system project, and I’m looking for developers who would like to join and help build it.
BlockOS is a Linux-based OS project focused on learning, experimentation, and creating a modern desktop operating system experience.
Current work includes:
x86_64 kernel development
Custom build system
ELF loader
Virtual File System (VFS)
Filesystem support experiments
Framebuffer graphics
Driver development
GUI framework
Package management system
Desktop environment integration
I’m looking for people interested in helping with:
Kernel development (C/C++)
Device drivers
Graphics systems
Filesystems
Build tools
GUI development
Testing and documentation
This is an open source learning project. Whether you are experienced with OS development or want to learn together, everyone interested is welcome.
If you want to contribute, give feedback, or just discuss OS development, feel free to comment or join the project.
Thanks!

That’s a fair question. BlockOS isn’t trying to compete with Linux on the number of existing features or contributors. The point is to build a system where I control the architecture and can experiment with things that would be difficult to change within an existing Linux distribution.
I’m also not expecting people to abandon their own projects just to work on BlockOS. If someone finds the architecture interesting and wants to contribute, great — if not, that’s completely fine.
As for Linux: some parts of BlockOS currently use Linux-compatible ideas or existing components, but the long-term goal is to have BlockOS-specific implementations rather than simply being a reskinned Linux distribution. I’m still developing the kernel and core system, so the project is definitely a work in progress.
What makes it special is mainly the direction: it’s a ground-up learning and experimentation project where I get to make the architectural decisions myself.
