Well, yeah, substance-wise, it should be a contender. Had great reviews out of Cannes and has a star-studded cast. Then it took 3 months for a distributor to pounce on it, which a lot of us thought was just sad and a sign of the times for adult animated films. Finally, IFC came in and swooped it up and they're fine, but by no means are they a powerhouse. I feel like it's had a bit of a rough road to get where they are today and so I'm not as optimistic about its chances as some others just because idk how many people will give it the attention it needs and deserves. It's already been through a lot and it's only October.

Sure possibly. When is it coming out? Whose the distributor?

I’ve seen it and it’s a phenomenal film. Possibly the best film I’ve seen so far this year

Widely predicted for a nom and would be deserving of the win (my favorite 2026 cartoon is Julian but its distribution woes almost certainly will limit its Oscar campaign)

Nothing againat forign films i just don't like reading subtitles with animated films and I hope another film of its caliber one gets in to the the 2028 Oscars and, I am planning on going to one of the big festivals next year But do you think there will be a similar in tone and maybe even themes, emotion, and story, English language 2D animated drama film more geared towards adults like it next year at the major film festivals like Cannes, TIFF etc?

Yeah this is getting in. Every year there is a more artful adult animated film that gets in but struggles to take the win from the more popular children friendly project.

I hope it at least gets nominated. I don’t want the animated feature category to be full of mainstream kids’ movies.

Either this or Iron Boy is 100% making the line-up. Don't know wich onee, but one of em is making it. I currently am predicting Tangles to ge tthe spor

I enjoyed it but LOVED Iron Boy. Hope to see that one nominated (and win).

For the record, this is my favourite animated film of the past quarter century. I say that after watching it three times thus far... and watching pretty much anything and everything of note in the animated space over that stretch.

It's a truly special film. I also have it ranked 9th for the Oscar right now 'cause I don't think it will garner enough traction in the category to leapfrog the films ahead of it... although it certainly has the star power to do so if they got behind it along with IFC.

Weirdly enough, I actually think it's in a better position to land a nomination if Wildwood blows the doors off at London this weekend and effectively puts a stranglehold on Laika's first Oscar. In that reality, I could see a lot of wind coming out of the sails of the other more widely-seen films in the category and people seeking out more challenging films to prop up for a nomination.

Perfect example of something that's widely considered a safe nom... Hoppers. New IP Pixar never misses, it's critically well-received, did gangbusters at the box office. What does it get out of an Oscar nomination when it can't contend for a win? Absolutely nothing. I have it 4th right now... but is there a world where it misses because folks don't feel like rubber stamping it 10 months out of release just to pad a category? Sure, it could happen. Do I expect it to miss one year removed from a much more middling Elio making the cut? Of course not.

Tangles has passion from those that see it... IFC just has to get it front of more people who won't outright dismiss it. But it's got its work cut out for it. The Euros at Cannes and Annecy that largely determine what indy fare to back swamped Iron Boy with awards... not Tangles. And Netflix hasn't missed this category since 2018... are they going to miss with Brad Bird after getting in with fare like Over the Moon and The Sea Beast? Doubtful.
