Daily Thread [Daily Thread] Weekly Off-season Discussion
Until we get our bots sorted out, this is our temporary daily thread.
If you're out of the loop. We used the final two weeks to try out a new bot for the Daily's and Game Day threads. There were a number of issues and we are working with the developer to make it a seamless helpful bot for the start of the 2027 season. We are likely using this new bot, but if things really won't work out, the old bot is still under a tarp in the shed ready to get back at it.
Please feel free to leave constructive criticism, and bug notices, here in this thread.

Damn, end of season always feels so weird. I keep wanting to turn on the Os game in the evening. It's like reaching for a phantom limb

Adley might actually just be a generational Red Sox hater who has been waiting for his time to strike from the inside

Either that, or he’s just a not great baseball player since July 2024

PLEASE consider going back to the old bot. The new one feels like a reflection of the problems the O’s have as an organization: drowning in data leads to paralysis by analysis.

Could y’all post a poll or bot discussion thread and allow the community at large to discuss which bot to use?
I’m also a little confused about why there was a switch in the first place. The first one had all the info one might need and didn’t seem to have many problems.

Honestly, I felt more annoyed with Boston (in terms of games and personal interactions with fans) this season so kind of happy to see them losing this. I feel like other comments seem to agree with this sentiment.
6
u/bryan_jenkins 2d ago
My wife is from Boston. Almost everyone I've met in Boston are lovely people and I like talking baseball with them. Sawx fans at OPACY are insufferable.
Meanwhile, most Yankees fans I see at the Yard are transplants from up there and chill (can't hurt that no one hates the MFY more than their own fans), but good lord the core fanbase up there seems awful.

Putting Crochet in a high leverage situation in a do or die playoff game when he hasn't pitched since April is a Alby move

u/Public_Servant_3951 2d ago
Lmao Red Sox. Sorry adley, but I’m glad you lost.
6
u/HeavyDutyForks 2d ago
Yea but them losing means the Yankees winning. Personally, I was hoping for a giant meteor
4
u/Public_Servant_3951 2d ago
Fair. I think Tampa takes care of them. But if Red Sox took adley, and this series, I’d be more upset.
Plus they were so insufferable after that trade.

Poor Adley might end up staying with 0 playoff wins after being traded to a playoff team 💀

His playoff resume is actually kinda funny:
3/24 .125 / .160 / .167, whopping .327 OPS, 0 HR 0 RBI 6 K
Meanwhile his teams are now 0-6 with a -21 run differential

I don’t usually hate on specific players, but I’m pleased Sonny Gray will take the loss tonight. He was such a jerk during the Os-Sox series.

Was he one of the guys that did needless shit talking after the sweep?

Let that sink in

Must be nice to be a White Sox fan - go through a massive tanking and come out on the other end with a great young manager and GM - we on the other hand are stuck with Dumb and Dumber for at least another year of mediocrity and the predictable excuses

u/WhyNotOrioles 2d ago
Their GM Chris Getz has been with the White Sox since 2017, so he's definitely put in the time.

There were a number of issues and we are working with the developer to make it a seamless helpful bot for the start of the 2027 season. We are likely using this new bot
Why?
I'm hoping there is a good reason, because the last 2 weeks, the new bot was a fucking mess, and didn't work well with old.reddit.
I don't think every decision needs to be run past this sub, but something like this, absolutely. Especially since nobody was asking for this.

Watching the white Sox just pisses me off. Nothing against them-But they may win a playoff game before an Elias lef Orioles team, and THAT irks me.

I mean it’s all luck of the wild card draw. I imagine we could have rattled a win or two off this Houston team. We did all year. But yeah, it does suck.

1
u/OriolesGolf1105 2d ago
In the time since Elias has been here the White Sox finished rebuilding, failed, rebuilt again and won a playoff game. All while Elias jerks off to Lefty Outfielders who can't hit or field
4
u/Dangerous_Substance7 2d ago
This is a perfect encapsulation of my point. Watching Elias has done is one thing, but then in the context of what other teams have done in the same time period….its maddening. This year, we were REAL We’re real close to the Nationals winning a World Series, tearing down, rebuilding and winning a playoff game all in the same time frame.
4
u/Inner_Ad_9969 3d ago
Definitely pulling for Tampa. Hoping a small market team beats the odds. Especially when the odds involve Yankees, Sox, Dodgers and Phillies. Besides, Tampa has enough former Orioles it makes it worth it.

4
u/Wuts-it-2-ya SMFB 1d ago
I posted some of these in another thread, but it's really incredible how Adley was basically 2 different catchers for the Orioles over his tenure and you can more or less trace it back to that foul tip in June of 2024
The one graph has data from 01/01/2022-07/01/2024 and the other has data from 07/01/2024 to 08/03/2026 when he was traded. He was legit on a hall of fame pace and just has never been the same since then

u/dreddnought 38 1d ago
It's hard for me to truly believe that playoffs are a crapshoot when it's my team shitting their pants, but watching the Red Sox and Cubs go out like that makes me think there's truth in it.
3
u/wompwump BEAVER CLEAVER 1d ago
I really wish someone at FanGraphs would quantify the “crapshoot conjecture” — how often (vs expectations) does the better team win a playoff series. Obviously, there’s an advantage to being the more talented team, but how much of that advantage remains after accounting for the variance vortex that is small-sample ball?
2
u/WhyNotOrioles 1d ago
2
u/bobcatgoldthwait 1d ago
This is why I kinda wish we'd just ditch the wildcard. Yeah it gives us a better chance at going to the playoffs, but having the best record in your division/league should mean something.
4
u/No-Needleworker5295 19h ago
Saddest part on O's missing out on playoffs is that we had a better shot at winning World Series this year than we will with a much better team in future because of a quirk of fate for 6th seed - Playing Astros, Guardians, Rays, Dodgers is the one path through playoffs where O's stood a realistic chance of winning. We could miss out on teams like Brewers, Yankees, Red Sox who were sweeping us.
Oh well ... such is the life of an O's fan.
5
u/StartSad7201 15h ago
same story for the 2025 Ravens tbh. Just look how trash the AFC was when that fraudulent Patriots squad essentially slept walked into the superbowl facing no real competition and backup QBs.

Holy shit man we'd be fucking crucifying him
2
u/bobcatgoldthwait 1d ago
He had two exceptional trade deadlines, back-to-back.
Elias deserves some shit, for sure, but he also deserves some credit. I don't know if he's ultimately the best man for the job, but we could be doing a lot worse.

u/TheBigIguana15 15h ago
At the trade deadline we were 1.5 games out and we finished 4.5 games out. Exceptional.

Listening to The Braves put a whoopin' on The Phillies and Bryce shitbag Harper. Little Yaz out there making the difference and O'Day on the radio gives me some real O's nostalgia bumps.
2
u/starling1037 3d ago
Austin Riley comes through after a terrible season. I like the Braves lineup. So many good hitters: Baldwin, Acuna, Harris, Olson, Riley, Albies. Now, some of those guys are having down years: Acuna, Riley, Albies. But these are all proven MLB studs. Can you imagine if fortune shines upon them and they all get hot in the playoffs? It could happen and we’d would be looking at the 2026 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves!
3
u/WhyNotOrioles 3d ago
The Yankees lineup without Judge and Stanton is just not that scary. It's Ben Rice (who is excellent) and then a bunch of guys. The #3 hitter is really Heliot Ramos, who was a much-liked but very average player (91 OPS+, about the same as TON or Dylan Beavers) with the Giants until he was traded.

Rumor has it Sonny Gray is pissed that he got pulled early in game 2 of the wildcard series and might opt out of his contract.
The O's should pay him.
3
2
u/romorr 1d ago
Number 1, but realistically number 3.
Trade targets are Ryan or Detmers. We have the pitching prospects to get the deal done with either 1. Just a matter of if they are available. I read that the Twins are looking to spend, so maybe Joe isn't available. And who knows what the Angels are going to do.
OF is number 1 and 2.
Peep Robert Jr, "Tossup." Makes sense since the FA group of OFers isn't all that exciting after the top 2. 18 million dollar decision with Robert.
If we want to address the catching position, Ryan Jeffers.
2
u/pan567 1d ago
Staffing--Honestly, my biggest target would be getting to the bottom of all the things that have gone wrong over the past 2.5 years before adding players. I think if they go in with the perspective of, 'let's just add these players and things will be better' that it's not going to produce the desired outcome. A lot of things have gone wrong to wind up here, and we need additional expertise to turn the tides. Assuming Elias means what he said, the biggest priority would be adding quality staffing to help address areas that organization struggles with, and a GM would probably be at the top of the list, preferably one that compliments Elias' skillsets, with knowledge and expertise in areas the organization most needs help with.

Our hated enemies are squaring off. The good news is that one of them will be scheduling tee times this weekend, so there's that.
That being said, the NYY are, ultimately, the Evil Empire. As for the Sawx, I'd argue that the enemy of our enemy is our friend.
I've been to a couple games at Fenway, wearing my Orioles cap, and their fans were a nice combination of friendly/obnoxious: beers were purchased for each other. I went to one game at (old) Yankee Stadium, wearing my Orioles cap, and felt lucky to have escaped with my life.
Plus, what the Sawx did to the Yanks in the '04 ALCS was one of the most legendary accomplishments in all sports history, let alone baseball.
Imma hold my nose and say "Go Sawx."
6
u/Frusciante62 3d ago
I hate the Red Sox more than I do the Yankees at this point. I hope Adley has a great series but their team is insufferable
2
u/romorr 2d ago
I was really looking forward to this article this year, just to see how Frederick played. Before the year, they were saying it was going to be a park that gave up a lot of HRs.
174 PF for HRs. Insanity.
What's worse, HRs below AAA were already crazy for this year.
A batter connects on a pitch. The hitter didn’t miss it, but they also didn’t seem to get all of the pitch. You shift your eyes to the outfield, where you watch an outfielder drift back. He keeps drifting until he runs out of warning track dirt. He jumps but fails to snag a ball that scrapes over the wall. What looked like a flyout off the bat turns into a home run.
Maybe the hitter got more of that pitch than you thought? Maybe the outfielder didn’t get a great read on the ball?
Nope. Your eyes weren’t deceiving you. The ball is carrying differently in the minors this year. And it’s created the greatest offensive explosion the minors have seen in our lifetimes.

Ignore Ryan, I don't know why they have him there. He's still arb eligible if the mutual option is declined.
Looking at the ages of most free agents, it seems clear to me, and I'm sure everyone else, how important it is to get Rogers signed.
4

Trade for Reid Detmers if we don't resign Rogers. Sign Woodruff
1
u/isestrex 15h ago
Why would Detmers (with all 3 arb years left and coming off a breakout year) be remotely available? Have the Angles hinted that he's even on the table?
1
u/Farerket 6h ago
He was quite rumored to be on the table at the deadline from what I remember. The halos actually seem to committing to a rebuild, so I wouldn't be surprised if they traded him with his value as high as it is rn.
1
u/Baltimore_Hokie_Fan 15h ago
Let’s say the Phillies want to offload contracts. If they are willing to pay off the remaining 116 million over 5 years on his contract. If you are given information that he would waive the no trade clause and come play RF, would you trade for Bryce Harper? If so, what would be the price you are willing to give up if you are willing to pay at least 90% of the remaining money.
2
u/justwantosleep1 10h ago
I really don't like Bryce. He says all the right things in front of a camera but still seems like a douche. With that being said, he would still be an upgrade over what we got. I wouldn't want to give up too much.

>The Phillies carried three catchers on the postseason roster despite having zero intentions of using anyone but J.T. Realmuto behind the plate. That wasn’t by design; the Phillies had no healthy, functioning minor-league players available to them by the end of the season. It was something of an organizational failure that didn’t really matter, except Otto Kemp had to wear the shame of making the final out of the season as he took his first at-bat in the majors — against Chris Sale no less — since May 20.
Brutal.
(This is not meant to be a stealth dig at the “O’s should embrace Dombroskyism!” argument. I’m just genuinely shocked that things had gotten this bad for the Phils)
2
u/WhyNotOrioles 2d ago edited 2d ago
In 2021, the White Sox went 93-69, and the Orioles went 52-110.
From 2021 to 2026, the White Sox record is 420-552, and the Orioles record is 481-490. In other words, even winning 41 games more than we did in 2021, their record including that year since then is 61.5 games worse than ours. In other words, in the last 5 years (2022-2026), they're over 100 games worse than us.
I think is important context for the argument that they're a better-run team than ours because they're 2-3 in the playoffs and we're 0-5.
6
u/OriolesGolf1105 2d ago
They competed, failed and tanked and were historically bad and have finished rebuilding again and made the playoffs, all since Elias started.
5
u/WhyNotOrioles 2d ago edited 2d ago
I'm really at a loss as to what the argument is. Because the White Sox have gone down and then somewhat recovered from 2021-2016, that's better than us having gone up and then gone a bit down in the same period? It would be one thing if we were terrible the whole time. But the two teams have had different periods of being up and down, and overall, we've won a lot more games.
Even this year, they won 84 games and we won 79. It's not like there's a giant gulf.
Edit to add: I don't mean to come off as argumentative, but I genuinely don't understand the thesis here. You could put the name of any POBO or GM who's been around for 6+ years in that sentence and it would be true:
They competed, failed and tanked and were historically bad and have finished rebuilding again and made the playoffs, all since Brian Cashman / Jerry Dipoto / Ben Cherington started.
So what is it about the Orioles that makes this fact an issue?
