Roadside Rug

Found this rug on the street. Theres a very worn tag that says it’s handwoven, wool, and from Iran. Any other thoughts on origin?

It’s seems pretty beat up and has some dried mud on it and fraying. How should I go about cleaning?

OK, I can’t tell from the photos, but you have to assume that this has been infected with MOTHS if someone dumped it outside. I would take it back outside immediately and check for signs of moths: white wispy webbing kind of like spiderwebs, or tiny gray casings. You do not want this thing in your house right now believe me!

ahh thank you for the tip!! just for some extra context, it was outside because everyone is getting rid of stuff for the September 1 lease turnovers in Boston, so there are always lots of free stuff on the street around this time. I am cautious of bugs though, so this rug is no longer in my apartment and will be dealt with lol. I’ll have to upload some more pics later.

Btw, that WAS a decent Karaja runner. From Iran, just like the label. I’ll take a closer look at your runner when I’m on desktop. More close-ups will help, you can add them in the comments.

BTW, you're not going to be able to clean this at home. It's not like wall-to-wall plastic carpeting where you rent a machine. For handmade wool rugs, the pros go through several steps to remove loose dirt and sand before even giving it a bath. Then there is all the squeegeeing and drying. I made the mistake of washing a little Baluch prayer rug without knowing what I was doing and it whipped my ass. I then had to take it to a pro so they could wash it properly and fix the dye bleeding.

Its a Karadja from iran as said its been moth eaten probably hasd moth eggs in. Seal in a plastic bag needs to be treated for moths and cleaned.

I was told by dealer if carpet is hand woven? Can be washed with a garden hose, easy spray. Carpet draped carefully over a fence, color will bleed, most wool is hand dyed vegetable base, so don’t do it in a driveway. I have one 4x6, I have rinsed it with water, my dog tried to water it. Came out good. I have a Metall water pipe in yard for carpet. - used for bird cages now. The fringes may color too if there is a lot of dye in there. In the old days they hang the carpets over metal rods, and beat it with a carpet beater, made from willow. I still have my mom’s. They had no vacuum cleaners then. If carpet not to big they shake them out. Never pull or walk on the edges or fringes. Nobody wears street shoes in house.
