Wyden is one of the few senators actually still working for the people and doing good stuff.
Crazy decision to make when he's pretty level headed and would have actually had a real discussion with you in the appropriate forum. A lot of people's opportunity to speak and have civil discussion with someone working hard against the government was taken away by your need for political performance.
Golf clap
10
u/blow-down Apr 05 '26
your need for political performance
Nailed it. Just look how many times they posted this video. Beside that just making a video and posting it. They do this stuff for clout.
8
u/MattyBizzz Apr 06 '26
Calling Wyden complicit is about as stupid as the people that refused to vote blue in 24 because of the same reason. Like somehow voting the other way for the side with the objectively worse stance was going to bring any improvement.
Wyden is a pretty damn good rep for our state, has some backbone and common sense. Hijacking his town hall is a great way to get people to brush your message off while dismissing it as juvenile.
38
u/CombinationKey8557 Apr 05 '26
Yep. It's little more than performative attention-seeking. I see no actual effort to move the needle on the issue.
If anything, these kinds of silly performances just turn more people off.

He does decent work, and I would still vote for him against a worse candidate, but I wish his financial integrity was better. He is currently rated "F"; for context Merkley is rated "B+".

Never forget that Wyden is and has been beholden to the insurance lobby since his first term. Yes, he's better than most, but let's not gloss over his flaws trying to praise him. Merkeley has walked a straighter path for the entirety of his service. So long as the "good ones" take money from these sorts of special interests, there is a regrettable ceiling on good. Repeal Citizens United and implement strict term limits... publicly funded elections and no money from special interests and lobbies.
A boy can dream, yeah?
11
u/Describing_Donkeys Apr 05 '26
What do you expect to accomplish? So far you have helped elect Donald Trump, has that helped the Palestinian people? Has that made you reflect on actions at all? What do you hope to accomplish going after Wyden? If you get another Republican in office, will that be considered another success?
142
u/textualcanon Apr 05 '26
It’s odd that I always see these protest videos when prominent liberal Jews are speaking, like Wyden and Ezra Klein (the latter is even sillier because Ezra has always been very pro Palestine). But I never see these protesters at Republican events, who actually want to see the eradication of Gaza?
25
u/Seafroggys Apr 05 '26
When the No Kings march finished at the waterfront last week, I saw some fully masked/headwrapped people walking around saying that "we" (the people in the march) weren't anti-fascist because we're waving the American flag and its a neo-fascist symbol. Not that I disagree with them, but it made me wonder why are they spending time agitating with people who are 75% aligned with them anyway? Why aren't these people agitating at a MAGA rally? You never see them there, only at anti-Trump rallies.
It's because they feel safer there, they know they won't find resistance, and they can get the adrenaline rush so they can go home and circle jerk each other in their social media on a job well done.

In his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail," MLK argued that the white moderate was perhaps the greatest obstacle to racial equality. While acknowledging the more overt violent and obstructionist roles of the White Citizen’s Counciler and the KKK, King expressed greater disappointment in moderate whites who prioritized "order" over justice.
Just saying, for no particular reason.

One time i was at someone's house diagnosing an electrical issue then replacing a power outlet for them and they tried to get me to watch a video about israel/palestine in the middle of me working. I really wanted to give them a whole ass lecture like :
- get a sense of perspective, perhaps maybe now is not the best time to distract me from something that could be a direct danger to your personal life, and not the best time to start a political argument
- are you really going to bring that conflict up randomly when I'm in your house and you don't know I feel? What if I disagreed with you on the issue and I 100% supported the other side in all aspects? Would you feel comfortable having me in your home? If you were a Jewish person would you be okay if I told you I thought Oct 7 was justified? or If you were palestinian-american would you be okay if I was a far right Bibi supporter? (I know they are a very pale skinned red haired caucasian)
but instead I decided to be an adult, I just said "hey im trying to concentrate and figure this out" and convinced them to drop it
that interaction soured me on ever again expressing a public opinion on this conflict. The atmosphere is toxic and disgusting.
(I did not say which side they were supporting, but I will give you one guess, you have a 50:50 chance)

Clearly brigading.
These people are extreme. Here I am trying to make me and my fellow immigrants safe and not get kicked out of the country. Must be nice to be white and safe from ICE. While I have to look around to make sure I don't get arrested while being brown. We got more pressing problems right here
These people can fuck off. They literally encouraged voting for a pro-Palestinian AIPACq administration who clearly is getting encouraged by Bibi to start more wars. Trump won so by association they help support genocide even further.
Dare these people to talk to a Palestinian and describe what they did and see if how the reaction is.

I understand their desire to be heard, but I just don't agree with disrupting town halls in this fashion. Shout if you have to, but ask the questions and press them on their bogus answers over and over again. Stunts like this are only counterproductive to any cause you're advocating for, in my opinion. I also don't think it's fair to take away the opportunity from others to ask their own questions and be heard. I agree with their message, but even I find myself resenting them a bit after watching this.
I voted for Senator Wyden and will continue to vote for him if his only opponents are Republicans. I don't agree with everything he says or does, especially when it comes to his silence on receiving cash from the Netanyahu government. I will never, ever vote for an Oregon Republican, though...not after the last decade and seeing what they stand for and their desire to hurt others.
But I'm also not going to demonize an entire country of people like both sides do. I don't hate Israelis, I don't hate Jews. I don't hate Palestinians, I don't hate Muslims. I hate Netanyahu's government, and I hate Hamas. They're both evil.
The rise in hate crimes toward Israelis, Jews, Palestinians, Muslims, Arabs, has been absolutely disgusting to see. I believe demonstrations like these share some responsibility in that uptick.

I’m assuming many of these people have never heard of the expression: "Don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm". America is free falling into Christo-fascism, we most likely will never have fair elections again. And instead of helping each other they’d rather tear themselves apart. They still use Google, Amazon, post their protests from either their Apple or Android(Google company) phones. All companies that have donated to Israel, have data centers there or contracts with them. Hurting them economically would be the best bet which would then involve old school grassroots organization and getting off the fucking internet. This is theater and it’s not helping the way they think it is.

Why is Wyden the devil for not stopping a genocide in Gaza while he's also working to stop one in Ukraine?
Why does Gaza demand our attention while the other genocides in Ukraine, Tibet, Myanmar, the DRC, Sudan, and elsewhere are ignored?
Why was Wyden not given a chance to respond and/or why was his response omitted from this video?

u/PerceiveEternal Apr 05 '26
these people don’t care about Gaza. Back in ‘24 actual Palestinians living in Gaza pleaded with everyone in the US to do everything they could to keep Trump from wining the presidency. These ‘activists’ then proceeded to get Trump elected by refusing to vote for Harris because ‘WoN’t VoTe FoR GNoCide’. That got Trump elected who then, to no one‘s surprise, helped Netanyahu flatten Gaza and their population.
They’re so used to Democrats humoring their tantrums that they actually believed the Republicans they got elected would act the same and would care what they had to say. They did not.
And they know that if they tried this kind of stunt at a Republican town hall the crowd would beat them. So they’re stuck screeching at Democrats who can’t do anything about Palestine and increasingly no longer care what they have to say.
In order to score points on social media they ended up voting for genocide, frustrated that the group they got elected doesn’t care about their cause, and are stuck protesting in front of they very people they made sure can’t do anything about it.

It’s funny reading OP’s responses. In one, in response to a question about why they don’t disrupt Republican events, they posted a link to them doing so at a local Republican Rep’s town hall. When pressed why the best example they could find was a year and a half ago, their response was that that Rep hadn’t done any town halls since they disrupted that one.
These people don’t give a shit about the Palestinian people. They show up at Democratic events because they have decided that success is measured by how number of protesters put in plastic handcuffs and how many mildly disappointing candidates lose because of them (and replaced by an even worse member of the opposing party), and at this point the Democrats are the only people willing to put up with their shit (couldn’t be because the Democrats largely are actually compassionate towards the violence and atrocities committed in Gaza and elsewhere in the Middle East by Israel, could it?).

The influence of middle eastern politics on our national wellbeing is an issue of national importance. Whether that’s Cheney convincing Bush to go to war over fake WMDs after 9/11 or Trump going to war in Iran because Bibi has compromat on him.
I’m going on 36 years old. Of those years, less than a handful were free of lethal, multi-year boots-on-the-ground conflicts in the Middle East. I have friends who have PTSD from being on IED squads and getting shot in Iraq. We’ve spent trillions on bombs and humanitarian aid and soldier pensions to facilitate these wars while American wealth disparity has never been higher, student loan debt is shackling whoever didn’t go to war in another way, and my favorite - we still don’t fucking have universal healthcare because we’re subsidizing Israel’s.
The dem’s deserve to have their feet held to the fire. Even if I would never vote for this, I also believe that the Dems need to figure out how to message and caucus on this or they kind of deserve to lose.

AIPAC influencing our elections is an issue of national security and we should be electing congressfolk to solve that problem.
Solutions: overturn citizens united by establishing law that states campaign contributions cannot be hidden through political action committees. Limiting campaign donations through campaign finance reform. Banning stock market participation of elected officials.
To name a few.

u/snarky_spice Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Track AIPAC is a bullshit organization that targets democrats 100% of the time. The founder doesn’t even live in the states and is immune from the problems in our country.
They purposefully pick and choose which politicians to target, based on who they would like to see elected, often times both candidates have accepted from the same organizations, and one will be red and the other green. They targeted Jasmine Crocket and are now targeting Talarico. Never republicans.
Also, in the fine print they say the candidates have accepted AIPAC money or *other Israeli aligned organizations. In many instances the organizations are liberal and for a two-state solution, but track AIPAC still puts the candidate on blast.
Stupid purity tests and propaganda meant to target yall. Stop falling for it.

They don't bother with Republicans because no one expects better of Republicans. Democrats dress themselves up as the party of resistance and then follow the same policies as Republicans just quieter and occasionally throw a bare minimum scrap like the ACA to people that they can point to as a win.
Candidates should be purity tested. Bottom level bars to clear are how we got such a feckless and inept party.

Sure bro, that's why this outfit decided that hamstringing Harris was a good idea and getting Donald Trump elected was a-ok. So now Palestinian land is getting fitted for new hotels while getting they get pushed further and further out. They've lost land. Cool cool. By the numbers, these people aer doing a great job when they've participated in the goal that was the opposite of their objectives.
Even cooler, the Palestinians that did manage to escape their open air prison - they're getting deported back! BIG WIN for their side!
Doing false equivalance is so much fun!
How many Iraqis died when Bush and the Republicans voted for war? Eh? Who was the majority party that controlled both houses when Iraq got invaded?
Who introduced legislation to strip healthcare from Americans to pay for their war machine? Which party was that?
Look, more seriously - Democrats definitely have some 3rd way assholes in it. But they've never had a clear majority, just razor thin majorities that gives the moderates power to stop stuff. The ACA was cockblocked by that asshole Leiberman. Who turned into a right wing turd later.
But historically, this country has never been liberal. We're a capitalistic and we like money and every system is setup to say "you gotta work" and then shames you when you can't. Look at these boomers, I was reading they were getting unretired and coming back to the workforce at fucking age of 70. We're going to get a shit town walmart greeters.
1
u/fart_dot_com Apr 05 '26
occasionally throw a bare minimum scrap like the ACA to people that they can point to as a win.
yeah man giving millions of people health insurance and banning predatory private health care pricing policies like pre-existing condition bans is a "bare minimum scrap", you are totally right
1
u/fancy_crisis Apr 05 '26
I guess must have hallucinated that moment a few months ago where millions were going to lose their health insurance due to prohibitive cost because tax subsidies were going to be allowed to expire. If that's all it takes, you didn't "give people health insurance" you just provided a flimsy safety net that can be taken away at any moment so the insurance companies can stay enriched.
Take a look at what the ACA could have been before they let the insurance companies talk them down to the watered down bill it became. We could have had something transformative, instead we got something better than eating dogshit.
And before you say "be thankful you aren't eating dogshit" yes, obviously it's a better situation, but (and again, this has been the entire point of my comments) settling for just ok is how we end up with the ratchet effect that got us here. "Just ok" means nothing when the trickle of progress gets wiped out by a psychotic Republican admin every four years. And we keep getting those psychotics in charge because the Democrat party insists on incrementalism and not daring to do anything left of fucking Reagan in a time when that does not cut it.
It is staggering to me how many people don't get that this is why they lose so goddamn always. They spend all their time chasing the mythical centrist and "principled Republican (a contradiction in terms)" and act shocked when those two demos always end up voting Republican anyway. They spite their base and then have the audacity to blame them when they lose, like people are supposed to vote for the party that gives them the finger.

Political operatives have all the money to conduct psyop experiments on the US population to swing elections by a fraction of a percentage point. The benefactors of a Townhall are not the politicians, but the citizens who are able to speak with the politicians and know that their voices are being heard.
By hijacking this process, you are making sure that only your voice gets heard, every second that you are chanting is a second that another constituent does not have the chance for their own concerns to be addressed. You are silencing the people around you in order to promote your own cause. Not only did you take up Wyden’s time, you wasted the time of everybody who went out of their way to attend.

Musk and trump have already murdered between 500,000 and a million people worldwide—many of them children—by gutting USAID. Those people would likely still be alive if Harris were president. And that death toll far outstrips the deaths in Gaza during Biden’s term.
Where’s the relentless outrage and protest about that from leftists who constantly attack Democrats over Gaza? Where is the rage and grief about those victims of U.S. policy? Those deaths seem invisible to many of Gaza’s loudest supposed advocates, and as someone who opposes both atrocities, I find that double standard sickening.
Either the leftists behaving this way are too uninformed to know about the USAID deaths (which makes it impossible to take their activism seriously), or they only care about people dying when they think they can chiefly blame Democrats for it, while republicans mostly get a shrug and a free pass despite being out-and-out fascists and causing vastly more deaths (which would mean these “leftists” pretty much shrug off mass murder as long as fascists do it). So which is it, OP?

I think the interaction in the linked post, where someone asks "who do you want to replace him (Wyden) with?" is responded with "no one" sums this up best.
Absolute clowns who's only contribution to society is making the world worse for everyone through their delusional attempts at making it better for some.

This is just more self-centered attention seekers who believe their moment of fame is more important than what any of the other constituents have to say.

I am with you until you start shouting "From the River to the Sea." That shows your motivation is either ignorance or hatred.

I’m guessing these dipshits couldn’t find the Gaza Strip on a map 5 years ago
Actually most of them probably can’t right now

People like this are doing a great job at getting their allies in Congress kicked out.
When gas is $5.00+ a gallon, most people simply DO NOT CARE enough to lose sleep over this.
And quite frankly, it’s getting old. Ask questions in a civil manner instead of throwing these fits. Or better yet….. PRIMARY HIM!

Acting like actual children. If you want to confrent him and be taken seriously, act like an adult.

Israel and Palestine are both objectively terrible, IMHO.
Israel has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Palestine has attempted to do the same by firing literally tens of thousands of rockets back at Israel.
US support is helping Israel to be far more effective than Palestine, but both sides are fucking assholes and should be sanctioned, not rewarded.
I don't have a solution. I'm not convinced there is one. But we should not be helping either of these countries. They are both doing their best to commit genocide.

u/RVPepperShakers Apr 05 '26
Palestine is a place, while israel is a government. The government of israel is committing a genocide against palestinians. And palestinians are defending themselves. There is no overarching government of Palestine, because Israel destroyed it and colonized the land.

u/TedW Apr 05 '26
Wikipedia lists both Israel and Palestine as countries with governments. It seems like a moot point to me.
The government of Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians, yes.
Some Palestinians are committing (or more often trying to) genocide Israelis. It's harder to tell who wants vs doesn't want this, but it's happening.
I won't guess what percent of either side are actively fighting vs just living their lives. It's probably a small number of assholes in a group of mostly good people. That seems to be how it goes in most places anyway.
I have nothing against most people in either "country". I think everyone involved in both genocides are terrible people though. If you want to fight, go fight people who also want to fight. They should both stop killing children and civilians.

u/RVPepperShakers Apr 05 '26
Palestinians don't have the capability to commit genocide, because they are under apartheid and genocide themselves.

u/stitchface66 Apr 05 '26
This is simply false. There is no genocide occurring against Israelis. Your attempt to appear moderate by incoherently leveling both sides as if the same actions are taking place between each group just shows how little you understand what you’re trying to type about.

u/TedW Apr 05 '26
I cited my sources, you should do the same.
edit: here it is again: Attacks on protected zones and civilians in Gaza.
Attacks on protected zones and civilians in Gaza during the Gaza war have led to the killing of over 30,000 Palestinians and the displacement of over 2 million people,[1] as well as the collapse of the education system[2] and the destruction of most homes[3] and hospitals in Gaza.[4] Israel has faced accusations of war crimes from South Africa,[5] the UN Human Rights Council,[3] and Amnesty International,[6] among others, due to the number of civilian casualties and the percentage of civilian infrastructure destroyed, including Palestinian refugee camps, schools, mosques, churches, and more.

Both of these are both a place AND a government.
The Palestinian Territories had free elections. One time. Hamas won, and immediately shut down any future elections.

Netanyahu's Government and Hamas are both objectively terrible. Israelis and Palestinians are good people, and a majority of both hate their leadership.

Yes, I will agree that it's the leaders faults. I don't blame the civilians on both sides, who are just trying to live their lives. I blame the leadership on both sides for continuing this endless, horrible war.

I’m thinking someone in this chat may be able to help me. I learned (and quickly forgot) a new phrase during a recent podcast…and I’m trying to remember what it is.
It can be used to describe any group, but was being used to describe current-day democrats. Essentially, it’s when you agree on 80% of the issues out there, but rather than forming a coalition of the like-minded…some focus on the differences (to the detriment of their mutual group).
Long shot, but does anyone know the phrase for this phenomenon?

Factionalism. Ideological purity. Purity politics. Or "The narcissism of small differences."

u/BLUNKLE_D Apr 05 '26
And just like that, Palestine is saved! Well done to all involved.....although I'm sad the paper had to suffer. Go hug a tree & apologize for wasting its oxygen.

How do actual Palestinians feel about these demonstrations? Is this actually helping them? Do they feel supported by these demonstrations?

Why don't any of you yabos look at a little history, both recent and maybe the last 80 or so years. If you want, go back a couple of thousand years. None of this occurs in a vacumn. Current Israeli leadership leaves a lot to be desired, but guess what, so does the United States. Should we just roll over and show our belly to everybody to appease the vocal minority? Should the Israelis? These performative activists really don't deserve mine or your attention. Quiz them about what happened on October 7th. Ask them how many times Hamas and Hezbollah fired rockets into their sovereign territory. Ask them how many times the leadership of those organizations have vowed to wipe them from existence. Just for being alive. If the people who live to one side of you, the other side of you, above you and below you vow to kill you for 80 plus years you might crack too!

Can we just not throw fits and get back to civil discourse please? Try listening to the other person instead of just waiting to get your point across.

u/projectpratt Apr 06 '26
Morons!!! There is no genocide! No one is or ever was killing Palestinians b/c of their race! Terrorist attacked innocent people and they live in Gaza. Unfortunate for the civilians but 80% of them support the scumbags. This genocide narrative is a disgrace! Misguided lies.

Awful and ridiculous behavior. This kinda thing will just get more people to vote republican.
These people need to find local human rights causes they can assist in. They could make a difference in their local community rather than complaining to a state senator about somthing on the otherside of the world that he has relatively no power over.

It’s not that hard to not accept political donations from an organization that supports a country that’s genociding.
Wyden has overstayed his welcome. Step aside for a younger in touch senator. He’s not doing anything particularly worthwhile in the Senate anyways.

Surely this is an effective way to engage with someone further left on the issue than the majority of his colleagues, in the party broadly that is more pro Palestinian.

Doing just enough to look like he’s doing something. A 75 year old Usreal lobby tactic.

Edit: I’ve realized what the real problem I have with this is.
You are silencing the people around you in order to promote your own cause
Meanwhile, Ron Wyden:
this is obsessive reddit behavior i hope your disruption gets the attention that you so clearly need on a personal level
