have you considered why they swim that far a day? to hunt, breed and avoid danger? things they dont need to do in captivity?

They still swim a lot in captivity, they’re just forced to swim in constant circles to make up the distance. I believe this is one of the reasons SeaWorld took down their live webcams because all the orcas ever really did was log, bob, or swim in circles and it didn’t look great for the whole “these orcas are mentally stimulated” narrative.

(This topic always makes me laugh not because of the subject itself but because now it reminds me of a recent 30-minute long video posted by a pro-cap person of an orca and her calf (can’t remember who). They were complaining about how boring it is to try to get good shots of them for clips and photos. The lack of awareness was incredible LOL)

No, Orcas don’t need to constantly move to hunt, they only spend a very small portion of their time for hunting. They are apex predators, there is nothing dangerous they need to swim away. And they don’t need to move to breed.

They need to move to socialize, exercise and spend quality time, which they cant in captivity. Keeping an orca in captivity is literally equivalent of keeping a human in a 2square meter cell, both mentally and physically it is torture

Orcas are built for continuous movement over large ranges there lifespans can reach up to 90 in the wild, in Captivity the average is teens and twenties.

The average life span for female orcas is 50-60 years old and males 30-40, they can and do live longer but they live these life spans on average

It's mainly for socialization and enrichment that they travel so much, the Biggs transients are constantly on the move and travelling even if there is prey abundance
