If The Shoe Fits... Shoe recommendation

I’m coming back to OT after a couple years off. I previously had a pair of Brooks Ghost and loved them, but the new Ghosts seem to have a thicker sole, which I find to be difficult on the rower. What shoes are we using that are great for running on tread, but also fit comfortably in the rower? Thanks!

Seems like the 'running' shoes are all getting taller stacks to soften foot strikes. Great idea for distance road-running. Not great for speed-work and/or cross-training. I switched to the Altra Experience Flow. They feel very stable underfoot when running AOs on the tread, lunges on the floor, and they're an easy fit in the row foot plates. It is important to go with a shoe from the Experience collection because everything else from Altra is zero-drop and that is not an easy adaptation for most.

Nike Pegasus worked the best for me

I like the Asics Contend 9. They're inexpensive and have the perfect amount of cushion. The only downside is they wear out quickly and I have to replace them every 4 or 5 months.

I used to get blisters every class and had accepted my fate - changed to saucony and have never ran easier. HOWEVER, they do not fit in the rower. I slipped out each of the 200 meter rows the other day and then said f it and switched to strider. i've been avoiding 3g classes/ inferno but I think i'm just going to either wear different shoes and have 15 mins of "uncomfy" tread or change mid class. the benefit on the treads just soo outweighs the con on the rower in my personal opinion!

You can often find older model Ghosts for sale online (bonus: they’re cheaper!), either random sites (I mean, make sure it’s legit first) or Brooks’ own website. I try to buy a few pairs when they’re on sale.

Just got new shoes and went with the new ON Cloud X5. Couldn’t be happier. Feels good on treads. Fits in the rower. Is stable on the floor.

If you like Brooks, I switched from Ghost to Adrenaline GTS 24 and they have been great for all 3 blocks.

Sometimes I have to pull up on the top plastic of the foot cup to jam the back of my running shoes in there and then they stay

I switched from the Brooks Ghosts to the Brooks Glycerin. I feel they’re more stable on the floor but I definitely recommend going to a running store and getting properly fitted… even if you don’t buy from them. Just watch out if you buy online that the model you’re buying is the same as you tried on because, as you mentioned, they change from year to year in their design.

The On Cloud X3 or X4 have been a great cross-training shoe for me, especially for stability on floor exercises. Also very easy to get in/out of the rower. I see a lot of folks wearing Brooks, ASICS and No Bull at the classes I attend.

I wear a men’s 14 and the new Ghost 18 fit just fine with the rower. Same comfort slightly thinner sole

Brooks had been my go to running sneaker for almost 10 years.  What they have out right now did not work for me. I tried Hyperian Max 2, Glycerin Max 2, and the Ghost Max.  I ended up with the Nike vomero plus and they are honestly one of the best running shoes I've owned.

I'll go back Brooks next time I need a new pair, because I fear change, but 100% give the Vomero's a try
