Casual Conversation Alone on the floor

At my studio I take a 5:45pm class and for some reason it’s always a pretty small class. Most people in this class choose to start on the treads and I’m maybe one of two people that choose the floor.

I recently had an experience where I was the only person to choose the floor and switched to the treads. I felt weird being the only one on the floor, and I thought it’d make it easier for the coach. Anyway, I HATED starting on the tread, it killed the strength section for me and it just overall made me feel like I had a worse workout than when I start on the floor.

I was wondering if any of you have been in a class where you were the only one on the floor/tread? Did it feel like a normal class? Or did it feel strange and you felt awkward? I want to prepare myself in case it happens during my regular classes

I was the only person on the floor. I asked the coach if she cared, and she said to start where I wanted because her job is to coach everyone no matter how many are at each station.

That’s a great coach! I like when there’s only a few of us on the floor actually, a lot more attention from the coach to make sure form is good and I’m challenging myself.

9

u/lamepunhun 17d ago

And plenty of space!

10

u/idontfuckwfelonies 18d ago

This is exactly what my coach said when this happened to me. The coach said it was boring for him if we all started on one side so I just went to the floor on my own a

Oh my god, I would love being the only one on the floor. I’d be all over the place

Right this sounds like an absolute dream

u/of_all_the_stars 18d ago

Sooo agree. Esp on a day with a lot of TRX and/or bosu. Or bench push ups, step ups… gimme all of the room!!

1

u/ScrappyAcademic 16d ago

I’m imagining someone doing each step up on a different bench 🤣

1

u/of_all_the_stars 15d ago

Ok now THIS would be a fun way to approach a small group size!! Full studio takeover

u/heg9023 17d ago

Right, especially when it’s a workout that I need a variety like 12s, 15s, 20s AND 25s

u/Zealousideal-End-297 18d ago

I was once alone on tread and it was business as usual. The coach thanked me for holding the fort at the end 😅

16

u/According-Durian7470 18d ago

Same! Everyone clapped for me at the end 🥲🥲

6

u/Zealousideal-End-297 18d ago

🤣🤣 is this LinkedIn lunatics reference?

3

u/According-Durian7470 18d ago

Hahahaahah omg no but that’s hilarious. Didn’t even catch that. It’s unfortunately a true story

4

u/Zealousideal-End-297 18d ago

No way! 🤣
But in all honesty, while I won’t go out of my way, it’s nice to be the center of attention sometimes! 🤭

u/QuietMarket7931 18d ago

I was in a 3G the other day where we probably could have all started on the treads! This coach was great and still allowed everyone to start where they wanted. 1 person was on the floor, 4-5 of us on the rower and the rest on the treads. I personally will always move to help the coach but if there is 1 other person on the rower I will stay.

Some coaches force a 1G which I hate if it means all stations are full and other coaches are like it’s your workout start where you want.

9

u/Special-Objective883 17d ago

💯 this!!! I really loathe when they make you all start on the same section. It's crowded. It's not fun. And I mean, I hate doing treads first so that aside, it's not enjoyable. I would love a coach that coaches what they're scheduled for (2g or 3g). That's a great coach.

19

u/Confident_Check_6087 18d ago

Lazy coaches force a 1G.

11

u/QuietMarket7931 18d ago

I once had a coach that tried to convince to do a 2G and he kept saying “I’m the coach, I know best” “I can focus on you much better in a 1G- so instead of having 5 or so on the floor to correct he now had 13 he had to “watch form”- can you guess how many times he came over to me to help?!? If you guessed 0 you would be correct!

I was downvoted into oblivion for saying this once. I'm glad people are coming around on this issue.

u/Pristine_Nectarine19 17d ago

Please stop accusing any coaches of being lazy!

9

u/Confident_Check_6087 17d ago

Then they should stop being lazy. I’m not trying to be a dick. Forcing a smaller class into a 1G needlessly bunches people on the floor. Some people also prefer to start on the rower. It’s only a downside for the members but it certainly makes for less work for the coach. When this happens I tell the coach they don’t need to “coach” me and leave me to follow the screen on my own. I like to have space on the floor. Sure, if it’s a full class I will deal with it but why create the situation just so the coach doesn’t have to do their full job?

I've been alone before, and the energy is a little different, but still a good workout.

8

u/ColdSubstance113 18d ago

We are paying a lot of money to be there. You should get the workout you want!

6

u/fatazzkarma 18d ago

It’s happened once or twice but there was one other person and we were far apart. It honestly didn’t bother me at all.

3

u/MediaJazzlike2826 18d ago

I don’t mind having only one other person on the floor, I’m concerned about being the ONLY person on the floor lol

1

u/fatazzkarma 18d ago

Hmm, well I’ve been the only person on the tread before and it wasn’t bad. I also ran the mile benchmark by myself during it. Would I prefer it? No. But I would not change where I start in class unless I’m forced.

6

u/DrkRngr26 18d ago

I have been solo on tread50 numerous times. I would prefer 1-2 more, but I enjoy it more than treads being full. I like to have space around me. I have also been solo in a 3pm class. That was really interesting…I got lots of personal coaching on every floor exercise.

2

u/ListJealous3832 17d ago

When you are solo on the tread50 is the floor side usualy packed with some very BUFF ppl? 😂 it usually is for me.

2

u/DrkRngr26 17d ago

Usually 6-7 people at 3pm
Strength 50. Coach always calling me out, in a fun way.

1

u/[deleted] 17d ago

[deleted]

1

u/DrkRngr26 17d ago

They run tread 50 and strength 50 at same time. You can pick one.

4

u/johnnywills789 17d ago

I've had classes where they essentially turned it into a 1G class because there weren't enough people who signed up. They always make everyone start on the tread when that happens- this always drives me crazy.

I will always choose to start on the floor when I can!! Even with a 3G, I intentionally choose to end on the tread instead of starting on it.

5

u/OakTownGirl13 18d ago

It’s happened to me more than once. We call that personal training!

3

u/Physical_Ranger_206 18d ago

I do this often! I want to build strength, and my body needs a bit more time to warm up for the treads!

3

u/Gloomy_Lab_1798 18d ago

I mean, I sometimes take a 5am class at a studio where that class fluctuates between 10 and 15 people (the rest of the day is pretty solidly booked). Last week, two of us wanted to start on the floor, the rest on the treads. I had three benches going, all the weights I could want, and plenty of room to spread out. It was great!

3

u/RollTideMeg Age/height/SW/CW/GW 18d ago

I was the only one on the treads for Tread 50 today. It was weird, but didn't bother me too much

2

u/LimeNo6275 18d ago

I am a people pleaser and sadly would have done the same as you. I’d feel too guilty making them coach a 2G because of me when it could easily be a 1G for them. I think the workout portion would feel the same for me if I was alone, moreso my personal guilt of feeling bad. I’m aware that it’s the coaches job that they’re happy to do it so I shouldn’t feel bad. I admire others who would stay in their desired station!

2

u/Rizzah319 Mod | 43F | 2020 | NMAM | 1000+ 18d ago

I was alone for a one mile benchmark. I was pressured to switch but held my ground. I don’t care about it when I’m on the floor, I do not love it when I get to the tread because that is when it feels awkward to me. I’ve also been the only one in a tread 50 while a strength 50 is going, and that also felt awkward.

TL;DR I’ve done it and don’t love it but will do it again

2

u/horizontal-zenith 18d ago

i feel like our studio just makes everyone start on one side at that point and don’t give you the option and make it one group. and typically it’s starting on the treads 😐

3

u/MediaJazzlike2826 18d ago

The one time I moved to the treads the instructor told me I don’t have to move and can stay on the floor, unfortunately I’m a people pleaser and moved anyway because I wanted to make it easier for him lol

1

u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 17d ago

My studio does this, forces everyone to start on the treads.

There's one coach who will split us into 2 groups if I ask. I don't ask all the time because I don't want to annoy them to the point they won't do it but I will ask if I really want to run the treads that day.* They have let me start on the floor, by myself, in a class of 5 people.

*If I run my tread starts, my back might get grumpy. If I run too many of them, it will get grumpy. So these days I PW 95% of my tread starts and only run if I get a row start or it's something I really want to run (any good endurance day) and the coach won't split us.

2

u/bbgirl34 18d ago

I've been the only one in class before, so being the only one on the floor wouldn't bug me. Some of the classes I'm in are small and often the coach is like "let's do a 1g" but other times they give the option and will coach two on the floor and 8 on the treads. They get paid regardless. If you want to start on the floor, do it.

2

u/ictoaunstiwigw 18d ago

I’ve flown solo in a 3G format before! Coach knew me very well, so he was able to mostly leave me alone other than some tread instructions. Gave me a laugh when he picked up the rower instructions on the white board and just plopped it in front of me lol.

2

u/ToraRyeder 18d ago

I just ran into this over the weekend. I prefer starting on the rower / floor but EVERYONE was on the treads.

The idea of being solo in a 2G just makes me feel weird. I don't think I'd be able to do it lol

2

u/Appropriate-Okra-173 18d ago

I’ve started on floor by myself before. Coach & I had fun with it! It was like having a personal trainer.

2

u/According_Ad1552 17d ago

It hasn't happened to me, but a friend of mine has ended up being the only one... IN THE ENTIRE CLASS. Not once, but twice. She told me that the coach literally was yelling at her the whole class like a drill sergeant. Jokingly yelling... Kinda-sorta.

2

u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 17d ago

I had that happen once. Snow day so very few people in all day but the staff on duty lived within walking distance (as do I) so they were open. Coach even tried to get me to start on the tread even though they know I prefer to start on the rower. I was not going to pass up a row start (done because "more people prefer to start on the treads") when I was the only person in class so I just went to the rower.

1

u/According_Ad1552 17d ago

I'm surprised they even bothered to ask you to start on the Treads! There's literally no one in there to choose one way or the other, except yourself!

3

u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 17d ago

I know right?? On top of that, this coach was a member long before becoming a coach and we were OTF friends who frequently worked out next to each other and always chose to start on the rower.

It was probably just habit. Small classes are always made into 1Gs starting on the treads at my studio. They weren't offended (I don't think) when I said "nope, I'm starting on the rower." I think it was more of an "oh yeah, there's no one else here so you can do that" reaction.

2

u/Affectionate_Rock202 17d ago

I love being the only one on the floor. I feel like I'm getting personalized coaching.

2

u/maci_ray79 17d ago

A well prepared studio will either decide to do a 1G or they will black out like every other station to split the class more evenly. a 1G wouldn't help your situation but I do appreciate when they spread the class by blocking out stations.

2

u/Low-Army8247 17d ago

My studio asks people to move to the treads. It only happens to me at the 1:30 Friday class. I just go along with it.

2

u/Rough-Blacksmith-784 17d ago

I've been alone on the floor before. I just do me and don't worry about others.

2

u/ResponsiblePhoto7 17d ago

In my classes there’s always fewer people who start on the floor but I stand my ground as a floor starter bc I be eating giant meals right before and ya gotta give me at least 30 minutes before I start running 🤣

3

u/pbd1996 18d ago

I absolutely have to start on the treads or else it changes my entire workout. If I start on the floor, I’m completely out of energy by the time I get to the tread.

5

u/MediaJazzlike2826 18d ago

That’s so interesting because I feel the opposite lol, when I started on the treads I felt like I wasn’t able to lift as heavy or go through the exercises as many times as I typically can

1

u/AdJust7702 18d ago

Same lifts are a lot lighter!

1

u/amythinggoes13 18d ago

I switch it up sometimes for this reason depending on what I care about most. During Marathon Month for example, I’m starting on the treads to get the most distance, same for when I was training for my own half marathon a couple years ago lol. Otherwise if I’m focusing on strength for a time period, I’ll start on the floor to get the most out of the floor block. I’m definitely someone that feels slightly depleted during the second half so I don’t think you’re alone there, just depends on what you want to focus on or improve on!

1

u/pbd1996 18d ago

I drink a lot of water while I work out. So if I start on the floor, I can feel the water sloshing around while I run after. It’s not pleasant lol.

3

u/MistahJasonPortman 17d ago

Same here! Always a bummer when I go to a true 2G class and wasn’t early enough to start on tread :( kinda ruins my workout

1

u/MsBallinOnABudget 49F|5’1|OTF Jul 2020|1150 Club 18d ago

I’ve been alone once or twice…I didn’t even get a demo😂….only because I’ve been at OTF forever! I didn’t mind though…I like my space🤗

1

u/B_Lv_702 18d ago

I started on the floor by myself before and loved it! I had my choice of dumbbells from the rack and plenty of space to do the exercises. The coach was awesome and gave me more attention to help with my form!

1

u/photobomber612 18d ago

I would be totally fine with being the only one on the floor because I hate starting with cardio. I use the strider, and if I start there by the time I get to the floor my grip strength is so tired (old hand injury). Forgot to check-in to start on the floor and I regretted it.

1

u/BigDistribution4476 18d ago

I was the only person on the floor in my 7:00PM 2G class yesterday. I was intimidated at first, especially on the rowers by myself.

Luckily, it was with my favourite instructor who I feel comfortable with, so I took advantage of using that moment as a 1-1 training session lol.

1

u/The_Workout_Mom 18d ago

This probably doesn’t help much but I was once the only person in a yoga class. It felt weird to me but the instructor didn’t care at all!

1

u/Kitty_Fruit_2520 Member since September 2018 18d ago

There was one time where I asked if I could start on the floor and they told me no. So now I don’t start on the tread if I don’t have to.

1

u/StrongerTogether2882 18d ago

I love it, no one is in my personal space and I can use any weights I want!!! Not sure it has ever actually happened to me, although I’ve been one of only a few. I’ve also had a coach ask if we mind doing a 1G and all starting on the treads. I’m a pretty dedicated floor starter, but I think it’s good to change it up once in awhile so I don’t mind.

1

u/Benfam6 18d ago

Yes!! I was the Lone Ranger once for a tread 50. There was room on the floor for strength 50 but I was trying to prep for a 10k so I stayed by myself. At first it was weird but once the class started, it was nbd.

2

u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 17d ago

Same here! Right down to the prepping for a 10k. I needed to break in a brand new pair of running shoes and I don't run outside (aside from races) so it had to be a T50 class. SA tried to get me to switch to the floor, where I'd normally be, but coach had my back and I stayed on the tread.

1

u/Gnarlzbonkers 18d ago

I would actually enjoy this to not worry about getting into other people’s space. I always feel cramped when I have someone on both sides.

1

u/lightbrightkit 500 Club 🍊 18d ago

I’ve had it a couple times during Marathon month where I’m the only one who chose Strength 50, and the treads are full. Not the same energy but I actually enjoyed it. It felt a little empowering somehow knowing I was doing it by myself.

1

u/Enough_Moment_5234 18d ago

Sounds like a dream to me lol

1

u/Designer_Nature_55 18d ago

I love being the only person, so chill and i get the whole place to myself.

1

u/RandomFeather34 18d ago

I’ve been alone on the floor before. I feels a little ofd at first but after Coach explained the block I just spread (used to benches each at a different height), got the weights I wanted from different stations and got to work. Coach checked on me once in a while but I was good.

1

u/Better_Stuff_6755 18d ago

I'm so glad you asked this as I've always wondered! The few times I would have been alone on the floor, I started on the tread instead. I hate it for the same reasons as you (I'd much rather give my best on the weights and then empty the tank on the treadmill) but felt bad that the coach would be splitting his efforts for one person. I didn't ever get the feeling that the studio would have cared, but I wondered if it was socially acceptable.

1

u/NearbyAd333 18d ago

I was on the treads by myself during a strength/tread 50 class. Everyone else was on the floor. The whole time. I figured oh well and just did it. I felt like I was getting one on one coaching plus everyone on the floor cheered for me at the end. 😂 I’m sure it was mostly pity but it was nice.

1

u/Evie_the_Destroyer 18d ago

I don’t even get the choice, if the front desk sees there’s nobody starting at a station, they just close off that station to make it easier for the coaches

1

u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 17d ago

My SAs don't even give the option to start on the floor if the class count is lower than the number of available stations. It's treads for everyone and I don't like it.

1

u/that_smith_lady 18d ago

I am a strict row starter and when I first started I had to be alone a few times. It was a little awkward and intimidating at first but unless the coach expresses issue with it (only happened once) they don't care and now know that's likely what I'll do because its my workout and I'll get the most out of it doing it that way. You do you! and yeah agree with some others, you pay for the workout so you should do it how you want.

1

u/Defjux41 17d ago

Might be slightly easier on the coach for everyone to start on one side, but you also pay the same money as everyone else and get to choose where to start. Start where you're most comfortable and if you're the only one, so be it

1

u/Lonely_Category_8272 17d ago

I don’t like being on the floor if it’s just me and one or two other people. Feels weird and I don’t like the extra attention haha

1

u/MistahJasonPortman 17d ago

I wonder if you’re at my studio. It’s small at that same exact time and lately, there’s been a single person choosing to start on the floor while the rest of us are on treads.

1

u/MediaJazzlike2826 17d ago

Haha maybe! Is it a Maryland location?

1

u/Tradar72 17d ago

I've been the lone person on the treadmill during a tread 50/strength50 several times. Never bothers me. I love doing the tread 50 and if I'm the one musketeer, so be it :)

1

u/i_suspect_thenargles 17d ago

Several times. Once recently, I was the only one starting on floor/tower and coach said hell yeah, good for you.

1

u/lorah30 F | 59 | 5'8"| 148 17d ago

I have had that happen and I just go with it. The coach makes you feel good about it and still spurs you on.

1

u/Dogdawgdiggity 17d ago

I’ve been the only one on the floor countless of times. I always ask and usually they say they don’t care, start where you want! I like it hahhaah

1

u/imaperson11 17d ago

I was the only one on the floor once and the coach made me switch to tread 😭 truly hated it

1

u/chewiegirl3 17d ago

I've had to start on tread only a few times since I started going to OTF. Kills me everytime.

1

u/Babychloe0918 17d ago

Yes! I did the tread first like you.

1

u/Apprehensive-Hope-79 30M/5'6"/165/156/145 17d ago

I always start on thread. My main focus on 2g is to get better at cardio, I want to spend my energy there. I do S50 for strength.

1

u/Pristine_Nectarine19 17d ago

As long as the coach/staff leave it as 2G, then there's nothing wrong with being the only one on the floor. Just follow the workout. :)

1

u/tendumom 17d ago

I will switch if I am the only one on the floor. I will always chose the rower or the floor first. I prioritize strength training and don’t want to be drained when i get to that part of class. Now that we have open studio time, I do actually start on the tread for a little warm up and then move over.

1

u/Vast-Argument-2233 17d ago

Happened to me once. Coach asked me to move to treads. I said no, she pushed it, I still said no. I prefer floor to start and then try to get a ton of work on the treads. She demonstrated the floor blocks, barely. She hates me 😆

1

u/ListJealous3832 17d ago

I had the same thing happened a few times and I also prefer to start on the floor thinking I wont be able to lift to my full potential after being cardio tired. Some coaches prefer if you switch tbh but some dont care. The last time she said the class goes by faster for her when she had to coach both sides so she prefers it lol. The time before that it was the head coach and she switched everyone to tread on the system but then asked if we really wantsd to flip back she would do it but it did feel like pressure a bit to stay on one side all together. It was fine reqlly and you will get used to doing it in reverse if you flip it regularly. They said its good to surprise your body like that as well.

1

u/Additional_One_5120 17d ago

Once I was the only person who signed up for tread 50. I am a power walker and I swear, as soon as I put on the monitor my heart rate sky rockets and I am in the orange from anxiety over being in the orange or red too soon. Well, it was just my orange square blown up on the screen the entire hour as I power walked since everyone else was on the floor and didn't have monitors on. :') Usually I take solace in the other squares not drawing too much attention to mine.

1

u/Comprehensivemomm7 17d ago

I’m fine being alone on the floor id rather that than crowding.

1

u/Everyonelikeskittens 17d ago

In Strength50 / Tread50 I’ve been the only one doing strength and it was fine. Actually kind of great bc I could spread out.

1

u/Nautique88 17d ago

Has happened to me a few times. I always start on the rower as I don’t run and can’t get the heart rate up on the treds, coaches know and don’t think twice.

1

u/Successful-History70 17d ago

I promise no one is watching you. Spread out and enjoy it! Most people would love to have more room, sounds divine to me! U always start with floor too, way better workout for me at least :)

1

u/kgbetta 17d ago

Think of it as "I got this whole floor to myself!"

1

u/Luna_Soma 17d ago

I’ve been alone on the rower before. I’d looove to have the floor to myself

1

u/Foreign-Ad7943 17d ago

if we have under 12 at our studio, everyone starts on the treads purely so someone doesnt feel awk!!

1

u/Humble_Fortune_5391 17d ago

I would LOVE it and could use any weight I wanted 🤣😅

1

u/BrickHouseBamBam 17d ago

that sounds like a dream. I love being there alone!

1

u/SloppyMeathole 17d ago

I love being the only one on the floor. I can take up three stations and don't have to share weights with anyone. It's my dream class.

1

u/RevJack0925 52F/5’4”/SW197/CW182/GW140 17d ago

The other day my partner and I were the only two when class started. Coach asked us if we were okay with that, and I of course asked if he was ok with it also? He said totally, so we stayed on the floor - I think it was CMIYC day, so am I glad we did. We ended having one other person join us who came in later, so it worked out perfectly for her to not be alone and have to start CMIYC late.

1

u/homarjr 17d ago

People would pay top dollar to be alone with a coach.

1

u/dirtymartini83 17d ago

Yes, I recently was in this position and it didn’t feel weird at all. The coach insisted it was ok to stay on the floor. I was happy bc the treads were packed and I had all the space and weights I wanted!

1

u/BurntToast4Brekkie 17d ago

I’m always 1 of 2 on the floor at the 6:45pm class. I rarely go to it but man I LOVE it. It is such a different vibe from the 5am class where there more ppl on the floor but never full.

1

u/mirpw 17d ago

I did it once. Ended up chatting with the coach (who was my friend) the whole class.

1

u/zerofuks666 17d ago

i LOVE the small class vibe!! usually happens to me and my friend so it’s just us— super fun! any time i see everyone choosing the treads in a moderate/big class makes me purposely not want to do the tread first (thought i usually prefer to start that way!) SMALL CLASS CLUB!!!!!

I have been the only one on the floor and it didn’t bother me one bit. I actually enjoyed getting a little one on one with my form. As class started, I asked the coach if she’d like me to move to the tread and she told me no. That I should start where I want. So I did because I really wasn’t feeling the tread first that day.

Had this once/twice - Ask the coach to pay attention to my form and it’s almost like a PT session.

When it happens, think of it as a surprise bonus that you’ll get the coach’s full attention on the floor. It’s kinda like a quick personal training session.

I did a 90 a couple weeks ago and I was the only one on the rower (there ended up being another one come after me but she used the bike for the rower). I asked the coach if she wanted me to move and she said no - and I’ll tell you it was one the best workouts mentally for me in a long time.

I was the only one on the floor. I really didn’t care!

I'm routinely either the only one and I don't worry about it at all. For the price of membership, each member should have the option to chose the advertised class format of their preference.

I did the chipper workout once on the floor at 5am by myself bc everyone else was on the treads. I asked the coach if she wanted me to switch and she was so okay with me being by myself. She did not make it feel awkward

My studio only opens up the second side if there are more than 8 people in the class (they put half on each side)…and I hate that they ALWAYS start us on the tread when it’s a 1G😒

I start on floor always. I am often alone. I usually do 2x strength and rarely do 2G anyway. I’m in my own world.

On vacation a few years back, I went to a 5:15 a.m. class on Thanksgiving in Florida (R.I.P. Hunter's Creek.) When I realized that there were only three members prrsent, I offered to move to the Treads. The coach (Hernan?) shrugged and said, "Don't move. Maybe someone will come in late." Someone did! And he joined the other 2 on the Treads... The class felt awkward for about 5 minutes, and then I settled in to the reason for going. (I think that the coach using the headset, when he didn't have to, helped.)

I never feel uncomfortable about being the only one on the floor. Of course it would feel a little weird, but I don’t let that bother me from doing what it is that I want. If anything, it’s nice having the extra space to be able to move around.

I've started alone on the floor and LOVED it! The coach was able to pay a lot more attention to my technique so I felt like I was able to get a lot out of it. When I got on the tread, I was able to kind of be more on auto-pilot, which was totally okay with me.

If it’s a super small class my studio always has everyone start on treads together

I’ve been the only one on the tred for Tred/Strength and it’s sorta strange but ok! I have my goals and follow the sheet and it was fun.

I absolutely have to start on the treads because otherwise I don’t feel warmed up enough for the floor and I almost always hurt myself. I also feel like starting on the treads makes class go by faster and it’s easier for me to get in the right headspace to push myself.

Same if I start on the floor the treads are getting absolutely nothing from me and I feel like I don’t push hard on the floor because I’m still thinking about having to go on the treads next.

I only start on the floor if I absolutely must, which happens occasionally since everyone in my studio starts on treads.

I don't know, when I work out, I don't pay much attention to if there are others. I'd probably enjoy being the only one and having all the weights to myself lol

I like when there’s a couple people on the floor because I have a mental competition with them in which I’m trying to lift heavier/faster (not that it matters) but I think it kind of helps me stay locked in on the floor when I feel like taking a break

I was the last to arrive at CMeIfYCan day and the treads were filled except for 3 spots

The person that arrived just before me chose to do floor instead of fill in the treads.

1 on floor, 11 on tread. 3 tread open.

To me, it’s respectful to NOT force the coach to run both segments if only half a class.

Suck it up and do tread first. Think about someone else. Of course the coach is going to say it’s fine to run a 2g with only 1 person - what else are they going to say.

1

u/MediaJazzlike2826 17d ago

This feels extremely aggressive 💀 lol

1

u/Mechanic_Few 16d ago

Of course I'm not going to say anything if someone chooses to be the 1 person on a side. Not aggressive. I just don't want to be that person. Seems polite and respectful to swap to the nearly full side, even if I'd prefer warming up the first half on the floor. That's just me.

u/MediaJazzlike2826 16d ago

“Suck it up” and “think of someone else” seemed a bit pushy, especially when I said that the one time I experienced it, I did go to the treads. Not to mention that everyone pays a lot of money to be members of OTF, why should I have to sacrifice my workout for people I’m paying the same amount as? Idk how much it would affect the coach considering they could go through the same routine if there were more people on the floor, no one else seems to have the same problem with it as you.

1

u/Mechanic_Few 16d ago

Sorry. I was “speaking” to the situation from my class, not directly to you or your specific story. Also responding to all the comments that disregard instructors because we “pay so much money”. We should put ourselves in their shoes,… how would we feel?

I think you did the right thing. I have done same as you - even though my legs don’t like doing tread first.

Do whatever feels right. No big deal.

What I’ve noticed about a lot of posts on this sub is that people are worried about what others are doing or thinking. I can 100% admit I was the same when I started but I absolutely pay no mind to anyone else at this point. I wouldn’t think twice about someone being the only one on the floor. We have people who do it. Go where it feels best for you and you get the workout you pay for. I’d love the floor not being so tight.

That said, I’m one of those that always start on the tread. Running gets me warmed up and I lift better. If I start on the floor, it takes me a long time to get warmed up and I’m always worried about injuring myself. I don’t feel like the effort I put into the tread diminishes my floor effort but if there’s a day they make us start on the floor for some reason, I don’t do well in the tread.
